Rest of U.K. today

Today´s remaining 4 meetings are less exciting, with Nottingham and Stratford (N.H.) in the afternoon and Sandown and Musselburgh this evening. At Nottingham oldtimer Cape Royal (Milton Bradley/ Pat Cosgrave) can end a long losing run under top weight in the class 5 handicap over 5 furlongs at 15.40; he is dropping in grade here and gave a slightly better performance last time out. Alan Swinbank has prospects of landing a double here with Full Speed (PJ McDonald) in the 10 furlongs handicap at 16.55 and Hartshead (Dean McKeown) in the mile handicap at 18.05. Easily the best race at Stratford is the class 3 handicap hurdle at 17.15, whch has attracted a strong field for the time of year. Mr. Jack Daniells (Ferdy Murphy/ Tony McCoy) and Nortonthorpe Lad (Alison Thorpe/Richard Johnson) have both been in great form but have shot up the weights as a result; possibly Pilca (Declan Carroll/ Johnny Farrelly) and Hartshead (Gary and Jamie Moore), who have both run respectably on the flat recently, can be preferred.

Galway Festival: day four

Some very competitive racing on the fourth day of the Galway Festival, which features two hurdle races, two chases, three flat races and a bumper. The N.H. events look the best races, and Uncle Junior (Willie Mullins/ Ruby Walsh) can get favourite backers off to a good start by taking the beginners chase at 14.50 CET. The field of 9 runners in the novice chase at 15.25 includes five last-time-out winners, best of which may be Dreamy Gent (Jessica Harrington/ Andrew Leigh), while there are no fewer 7 last-time-out winners in the 2 1/2 mile novice hurdle at 16.00. One of them is ex-German Spiriton who could go well at a big price. Main feature is the Galway Hurdle, a very valuable handicap over 2 miles at 16.40 with 20 runners, all of whom will have been specially prepared for this. Three to take against the field are Majestic Concorde (Dermot Weld/ Denis O´Regan), an easy winner of a valuable flat race here on Mondax and whose trainer is in unstoppable form, the very consistent Northern Alliance (Tony Martin/ Ruby Walsh) and the mare Megan´s Joy (Colm Murphy/ Barry Geraghty)

Glorious Goodwood: day three

Main feature today at Goodwood today is the Group Two Goodwood Cup over 2 miles at 16.30 CET and this looks yet another top British prize destined to go to Aidan O´Brien, who runs Yeats (Johnny Murtagh) and Honolulu (Seamus Heffernan). Clearly Yeats is the stables number one followims hat-trick of successes in the Ascot Gold Cup; he also won this race very easily in 2006 and in fact has won 6 of his last 7 starts and despite his 5 lbs Group One penalty looks very hard to beat here.

If there is an upset, it is likely to be his stable-companion Honolulu, also a Royal Ascot winner his year,to spring it, as the home challengers, headed by Distinction (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore) and Mad Rush (Luca Cumani/ Seb Sanders), who is stepping up in both class and distance, look well held on all known form. The card starts with a Group Three race for fillies over 1 3/4 miles at 15.15, in which Godolphin´s Folk Opera (Frankie Dettori) looks the form choice, but with the Godolphin horses currently not running up to expectations, one could perhapslook elsewhere, for example to Stoute´s Hi Calypso (Moore), who won this last year, or the 3yo Miracle Seeker (Clive Cox/ Philip Robinson), a half-sister to champion hurdler Katchit.

Another Godolphin runner Dandy Man (Dettori) looks likely to start favourite for the Group Three 5 furlongs race at 15.50, but there are several alternatives here, such as Desert Lord (Kevin Ryan/ Jamie Spencer), winner of the Abbaye on firm ground 2 years ago, last year´s winner Moorhouse Lad (Bryan Smart/ Moore), or the smart handicapper Masta Plasta (David and Adrian Nicholls), moving up into group company for the first time.

Betting forecast:
1.Race: Folk Opera - Hi Calypso - Arthur`S Girl
2.Race: Dandy Man - Masta Plasta - Fat Boy
3.Race: Yeats - Honolulu - Mad Rush
4.Race: Khateeb - Fifteen Love - Hawaass
5.Race: Adversity - House - Tawaash
6.Race: Sanvean - Midday - Brief Candle
7.Race: Elhamri - Rasaman - Toms Laughter

Rest of U.K. today

The remaining races are all of relative minor interest compared to the goings-on at Goodwood and Galway. There is flat racing this afternoon at Redcar and N.H. racing from Perth, while this eveing thee is racing at Leicester and on the all-weather at Kempton. The best race at these meetings is probably the mile handicap at Kempton at 21.30 CET, with a maximum field of 14 declared. The Fifth Member (James Boyle/ Ted Durcan) ran a great race when 3rd of 20 yesterday at Goodwood and if he turns out can again figure prominently, but preference is for two lightly-raced types, Premio Loco (Chris Wall/ George Baker) and Rose Street (Michael Jarvis/ Philip Robinson).

Galway Festival - day three

Galway´s festival continues today and the main feature is the most valuable race of the meeting, the Galway Plate, a handicap chase over 2 3/4 miles at 16.40 CET with a maximum field of 22 runners. The 12yo Ansar (Dermot Weld/ Denis O´Regan) is a standing dish here, having won the race twice and been placed twice as well. Weld is enjoying a fantastic week as usual, but it would certainly be the crowning glory if this veteran could take the race for the third time. Top British trainer Paul Nicholls supplies two of the main dangers in top-weight Hoo La Baloo (Nick Scholfield) and the heavily-backed ante-post favourite Oslot (Ruby Walsh). Of the lightweights, Tony Martin´s ex-German Green Mile (Robby Colgan) makes most appeal. However Ansar fares, Dermot Weld, who has already won 6 races at the meeting, can score a double in the two maiden races on the flat, with Lady Alicia (M.M.O´Connor) in the amateur´s race over 1 1/2 miles at 18.00, and Designated Lady (Pat Smullen) over an extended mile at 19.05.

Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood

Glorious Goodwood moves into its second day when the main feature is the most important race of the week, the Group One Sussex Stakes ar 16.30 CET, the unofficial summer mile championship. 7 runners here, and the clear favourite is Aidan O´Brien´s Henrythenavigator (Johnny Murtagh), who looks a near certainty to continue his stable´s extraordinary run of success in Group One races (15 already won in 2008, including two last weekend). "Henry" is unbeaten in 3 starts this season, the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St. James´ Palace at Royal Ascot. O´Brien has won this race with Giant´s Causeway and Rock of Gibraltar, but has described today´s runner as the best miler he has ever trained, and although he faces older horses fr the first time,he should not be troubled to continue his own and the trainer´s winning run. Raven´s Pass (John Gosden/ Jimmy Fortune) has already twice followed him home this year and looks booked for the runner-up spot. Major Cadeaux (Richard hannon/ Richarfd Hughes) looks best of the older runners. In view of the likely odds, this is not a race to bet on, but the Group Two Vintage takes for 2yo´s over 7 furlongs at 15.50 looks a very open affair. Peter Chapple-Hyam´s Sayif (Seb Sanders) has finished runner-up on both h starts so far and can reverse the form with his Newmarket conbqueror Firth of Forth (Tom Dascombe/ Richard Kingscote) on 3 lbs better terms. The Irish challengers look very menacing; jockey bookings suggest that Westphalia (Murtagh) is the better of Aidan O´Brien´s pair, but Ryehill Dreamer (Tommy Stack/ Wayne Lordan) should also be considered. The Goodwood Stakes which opens the card at 15.15 is at 2 miles 5 furlongs one of the longest flat races in the calendar, and looks very tricky. Som Tala (Mick Channon/ Frankie Dettori) ran fifth in this last year but can defy top weight this time, but with 20 runners this is a difficult race to call.

German runners at Maisons-Laffitte

The Paris season is ending this week as the whole of the French racing world decamps to Deauville for the summer break, but there could still be some German-trained winners at Maisons-Laffitte today. Werener baltromei saddles two candidates with good chances in Time to Beat in the conditions race for 3yo´s over 1400 metres at 14.20 and Loup de Mer i the 3100 metres claimning race at 17.20, both with Dominique Boeuf in the saddle. At anywhere near his best form, Loup de Mer, who will be joined by Norbert Sauer´s Pennekar (Jerome Lermyte) in a dual-pronged German challenge, would win this. Horst Steinmetz´ Bedford Hope (Davy Bonilla) also has a fair chamce in the claiming race for 3yo fillies over a mile at 16.20. There is also trotting this afternoon at Laval and this evening at Cabourg.

Rest of U.K. today

The remaining British meetings today are of much less interest, a low level flat meetimg at Beverley this afternoon, and jumps racing this evening at Perth and Worcester. It could be highly significant that in-form trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies sends his stable jockey Paddy Brennan on the long journey to Scotland to partner 3 runners at Perth, and they all appear to hold winning chances: Rory´s Boy, in the 3yo novice hurdle at 20.10 CET, Apollo Creed, going for a four-timer in the 3 miles handicap chase at 21.15, and Leamington Lad, who has top weight in the handicap hurdle at 22.15. At Worcester, Paul Nicholls´ Roby de Cimbre (Sam Thomas) can take the 2 mile handicap chase at 20.50, while German-bred Ladino (Sheena West/ Jamie Goldstein) has a good each-way chance under top weight in the handicap hurdle at 21.20. He has St.Mellion Freeway (Alison Thorpe/Noel Fehily) and Barneys Mate (Tony Honeyball/ Rachel Green), who has won his last 2 races very easily- both this CD and with this rider- to beat.

Glorious Goodwood: day one

Galway is not the only meeting this week - in fact it is trumped in almost every respect by the Glorious Goodwood meeting which begins today. Certainly the racing here is of much higher quality and today´s card features three group races. The Gordon Stakes for 3yo´s over 1 1/2 miles at 15.50 CET is a traditional St. Leger trial and looks at the mercy of Sir Michael Stoute´s Conduit (Ryan Moore), who finished strongly when runner-up in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. Hebridean (Aidan O´Brien/ Johnny Murtagh) finished well behind that day, but with the stable in unstoppable form, he looks the obvious (and probably only) danger. The Betfair Cup over 7 furlongs at 16.30 os toda´s main feature, and Ryan Moore is again on the hot favourite, John Gosden´s Infallible, who as a 3yo filly received weight from all the other 8 runners. She has excellent form in the top fillies races, but it might not be so easy against the colts, and possibly Godolphin´ s Il Warrd (Frankie Dettori) and Jeremy Noseda´s Atrabian Gleam (Johnny Murtagh) can be preferred. The Molecomb Stakes for 2yo´s over 5 furlongs at 17.05 has attracted a very strong field of 15, and Bryan Smart´s Spin Cycle (Ted Durcan) looks the likely favourite after finishing second in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. Flashmans Papers (John Best/ Steve Drowne), out of German mare Franglais- finished fourth that day after winning at 100-1 two days earlier and could be in the shake-up again, while it is interesting that his trainer also saddles the newcomer Noverre to Hide (Liam Keniry). Obviously it is unusual for a debutant to win such a race, but he has apparently been working as well as his stable companion. Godolphin´s Global City (Dettori) also looks dangerous after winning in a canter at Yarmouth last time, although this race is naturally much tougher. The most interesting of the handicaps could be the 1 3/4 miles race at 17.40, with several Ebor entries among the 14 runners. Luca Cumani saddles the two top weights, Sanbuch (Ryan Moore) and Bauer (Murtagh), while Godolphin rely on the lightly-raced Moon Quest (Dettori) but the fascinating runner here is the unbeaten Milne Graden (Noseda/ Tom Queally), two of whose victories came here over 10 furlongs. The extra half mile is an unknown quantity, but he shapes like a colt with huge potential.

Galway Festival: day two

Dermot Weld is always the man to follow at the Galway Festival, and this was demonstated again last night when he saddled 4 winners at the Ballybrit track. There could be more of the same today, and his Rare Ransom (Pat Smullen) looks the best bet of the evening in the 7 furlongs maiden race for 2yo fillies at 20.35 CET. She made an excellent debut when beaten only half a length by the smart Chintz 7 weeks ago and this race has been her target ever since. The Weld/ Smullen team can also take the 3yo maiden over the same trip at 21.40 with Award Ceremony, although on ratings Great Barrier Reef (Aidan O Brien/ Seamus Heffernan) looks hard to beat; however that one has been turned over at long odds-on on both his 2008 starts and appears not to have trained on. Weld has booked Ruby Walsh to ride his Noble Crusader in the 2 mile maiden hurdle at 18.10, and despite a 9 months break, this one can also go well. Most valuable race of the evening is the Galway Mile, a handicap with a maximum field of 18 which looks wide open. It could be significant that Yorkshire trainer Richard Fahey has sent over two runners here with his smart young apprentices aboard - Benandonner (Jamie Moriarty) and Bolodenka (Freddie Tylicki), whose only run this year was when he was a faller over hurdles at Aintree in April.

German runners at Chantilly

Several German-trained runners today at Chantilly, starting with Werner Baltromei´s Lord John (Dominique Boeuf) in the opening tiercé handicap for 4yo´s over 2400 metres at 13.50 CET. Boeuf also rides Davitesse for Mario Hofer in the 1000 metres 2yo claiming race at 14.20 and Weardi for Conny Brandstätter in the second and easier division of the 2400 metres handicap at 17.20. The main feature is the listed Prix la Moskowa over 3000 metres at 16.20, here there are only 5 runners, two of them trained in Germany: Limatus (Pavel Vovcenk/ Andrasch Starke) and Zadounevees (Wolfgang Gülcher/ Boeuf). There is also trotting at Mauquenchy.

U.K. racing today

A typical Monday, with mainly low level racing at Southwell (all-weather) and Yarmouth this afternoon, and Windsor and Uttoxeter (N.H.) this evening. The bes race at Yarmouth is the class 4 handicap over 7 furlongs at 17.00 CET, in which top-weight Manchurian (Mark Wallace/ Pat Cosgrave) appears to have Bobski (Gay Kelleway/ Alan Munro) and Mark Johnston´s Fitzroy Crossing (Greg Fairley), now sporting first-time blinkers are soe disappointing efforts, to brat- but none of them look too reliable. At Southwell, Sir Mark Prescott, whpo contonues in great form, can take the 2yo handicap at 15.45 with Night of Fortune (Seb Sanders), who is penelaised 6 lbs for winning at Kemptpn 4 days ago. The 6 furlongs handicap at 17.15 looks quite open, perhaps Sanders can double up with James Fanshawe´s Dan Chillingworth, who has been placed fifth on all his four career starts so far, but looks capable of winning in this grade. Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes, who are usually on the mark at Windsor, can score a double with Orange Pip in the fillies handicap over 6 furlongs at 20.40, and Border Owl in the mile maiden race at 21.15. At Uttoxeter´s jumps meeting, German-bred Galiana (James Lambe/ Tony McCoy) can take the opening novice hurdle at 19.15 and McCoy also has a couple of good chances for Jonjo O´Neill, whose horses are now running much better, notably Different Class in the 3 mile handicap chase at 20.20.

Galway festival - day one

Many racegoers now regard the Galway festival as the best Irish meeting of all, and with the prize-money continuing to go up and all the leading Irish trainers (both flat and N.H.) strongly represented, this year´s festival may well be the best ever. The opening race could well go to a German-bred, as Dancera (Mervyn Torrens/ A.P.Thornton) was a narrow winner over hurdles last week at Ballinrobe and has a chance in the novice hurdle at 18.10 CET, although the opposition is now much stronger. The race for 2yo maodens at 19.20 sees a clash- likely to be repeated often this week- between Dermot Weld, who usually targets this meeting, and Aidan O´Brien, who can do litlle wrong at present. Their runners Broad Meaning (Pat Smullen) and Drumbeat (Johnny Murtagh) will probably take the first two places, with thre Aa Khan´s debutant Zarinski (John Oxx/ Mick Kinane) looking the only danger. Big race today is the 2 mile handicap for amateur riders at 20.00, worth a whoppin 60,000 euros to the winner. Wth 20 runners, almost anything can happen. The field includes German-bred Arc Bleu (Tony Martin/ C.P.McNally) and Halla San (Richard Fahey/ Ben Hamilton), who recently filled the first twoµplaces in the Northumberland Plate. The latter is now two pounds better off for a short head. Dermot Weld´s Majestic Concorde (Robbie McNamara) has an obvious chance, as does P´tit Fute (Francis Flood/ Derek O´Connor), who has not run on the flat since winning this race 2 years ago, but is a recent winner over hurdles. However the likely favourite is Miss Fancy Pants, winner of her last 2 races, and the choice of top amateur Nina Carberry from Noel Meade´s 3 entries

Farewell to Kerrin McEvoy

Europeans are unlikely to see Kerrin McEvoy in action again after it was announced yesterday that he is to give up his job as second jockey to Godolphin with immediate effect and start next week as stable jockey to Darley Australia, based in Sydney. The ultimate owner of both operations is of course Sheikh Mohammed, who following his recent acquisitions has about 300 horses in training in Australia. Obviously this is a huge opportunity for the young Australian, but he will miss British and European racing and we shall miss him too. During his five years here he has made an extremely positive impression with his quiet but effective riding style and his excellent demeanour. Two of his major victories came with Warrsan in the Grosser Preis von Baden, while he has this season been associated with the German stars Saddex and It´s Gino.

Maisons-Laffitte today

This is the last big raceday in Paris, before the French circus moves to Deauville for the big summer meeting o the Normany coast, and Maisons-Laffitte celebrates the occasion by staging two group races, bvoth with good fields. The Prix Robert Papin for 2yo´s over 1100 metres at 15.45 sees the return of the Paul Cole-trained speedball Percolator (Chistophe Soumillon), winner of all his 4 starts, 3 of them in France. He established a new course record when winning here last time, but is likely to start at very short odds, and Robert Collet´s Enchanting Muse (Christophe Lemaire), impressive winner of his only start before, could be a better bet at the likely prices. The Prix Eugene Adam for 3yo´s over 2000 metres at 16.50 could see the coupled runners in the Khalid Abdullah colours playing a leading role. Henry Cecil, who has won this race twice in ther last 10 years, has good prospects with Twice Over (Ted Durcan), for whom the ditance is probably ideal, while André Fabre, who has won the race 13 times, relies on Ideal World (Stephane Pasquier). Royal Ascot winner Collection (William Haggas/ Kerrin McEvoy) steps in class with a decent chance, but Mario Hofer´s Lancetto (Olivier Peslier) is only an outsider; he would have a chance on his second place to Kamsin at Frankfurt in April, but ran very disappintingly last time, Hofer also saddles the tough Kaliyan (Johan Victoire) in the Grand Handicap de Maisons-Laffitte over 2400 metres at 14.45.

Ascot, Carlisle and Pontefract

Today is the third and final day of Ascot´s July meeting and two valuable heritage handicaps top the card. The race at 15.,15 CET is over 1 1/2 miles and with 17 runners looks very tricky. Luberon (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning) has not run since winning a similar rade at the York May meeting, but just holds Pevensey (John Quinn/ Steve Drowne) on that form. Top-weight Sugar Ray (Sir Michael Stoute/ Seb Sanders) won a similar handicap at the Royal meeting, wit several of these behind, notably course specialist Young Mick (George Margarson/ Richard Quinn), who ran on well to be fourth then and has run another good race since; he won this event back in 2006. The big improver in the field is Andrew Balding´s Hatton Flight (Francis Norton), who has won his last 4 races but is now moving up in class and distance. Balding also holds a strong hand in the 5 furlongs handicap at 15.50 with 3 runners, all in good form: Holbeck Ghyll (David Probert), winner of the Epsom Dash on Derby Day, Siren´s Gift (Norton) and the 3yo Little Pete (Chris Catlin). However wth 28 runners (!) this is as wide open as a race can possibly be. The racing at Carlisle and Pontefract is of lower quality, but the latter track does stage a mile listed race at 16.50. The problem here is the firmish ground, and several of the 8 declared runners prefer it soft and may well be pulled out, including possible favourite Calming Influence (Saeed bin Suroor/ Daragh O´Donohoe). Richard Hannon´s Redolent (Pat Dobbs), runner-up to Wiesenpfad last time, looks the most reliable alternative. The sprint handicaps here are as always very difficult, but punters should take note of CD specialist Mr. Wolf (David Barker/ Greg Fairley) who has top-weight in the 6 furlongs race at 18.30.

Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh

Today´s Phoenix Stakes at 16.00 CET at the Curragh is the first Group One 2yo race of the season, and although there are only 6 runners, has attracted some high class performers. Michael Bell´s Art Connoisseur (Jamie Spencer) is unbeaten after 3 stars and showed tremendous speed to win the Coventry at Royal Ascot. Aidan O´Brien has won this race on numerous occasions and the stable selected Master Craftsman (Johnny Murtagh) is also unbeaten and must be strongly considered, as is also the case with David Wachman´s Bushranger (Wayne Lordan), who has won both his Irish starts and was 2nd in a huge field at Royal Ascot. There are also two listed races on this high class card. 7 of the 8 runners in the 2yo race over 5 furlongs at 15.00 are fillies, and Connie Mac (Andrew Oliver/ Declan McDonagh) may confirm Royal Ascot form with Nubar Lady (Tommy Stack/ Wayne Lordan). Silver Shoon (Dermot Weld/ Pat Smullen) has been a bit unlucky so far, but with the stable now in top form, she looks a big danger. The fillies race over 6 furlongs at 17.10 has 13 runners and looks wide open. Dimenticata (Kevin Prendergast/ Chris Hayes) came back to form when winning a similar race a week ago, but must concede weight to Akua´Ba (Jim Bolger/ Kevin Manning) and Age of Chivalry (John Oxx/ Mick Kinane) among others.

Todays racing at Newcastle and Newmarket

There is also racing at Newcastle and Newmarket this afternoon and this evening at Lingfield (on turf) and Salisbury. David Barron could be the trainer to follow at Newcatle; he saddles two runners in the class 3 handicap over 7 furlongs at 16.25 CET, Flipando (Neil Brown) and Zero Tolerance (Michael Stainton), and although they might prefer softer going, both have a chance, while his Thornaby Green (Dean Heslop) can take the apprentice handicap at 18.05 under top weight. At Newmarket, Jeremy Noseda, who has runners all over, saddles Meydan Princess (Shane Kelly) in the class 2 handicap over 7 furlongs at 16.30, and if she gets off on terms she must have a fair chance of defeating Chantilly Riffany (Ed Dunlop/ Tom Queallky) and Musican Beat (Vicky Haigh/ Jean-Pierre Guillambert). The most interesting runner at Salisbury is Palace Moon (Hughie Morrison/ Steve Drowne), a half-brother to Sakhee´s Secret, weho made a promising debut this CD in May, and can take the 6 furlogs maiden race at 20.40, while best bet at Lingfield could be the in-form Amicable Terms (Rae Guest/ William Carson), who can score for the fourth time in his last 5 outings in the opening 10 furlongs handiap at 18.50. There is no Irish racing today, nor any N.H. racing.

King George at Ascot

The Group One King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, to be run this afternoon at 17.20 CET at Ascot, is the most important event of the European summer, but possibly no longer has quite the prestige it enjoyed in the last quarter of the 20th century, when it was the automatic summer target for the Derby winner and the other top staying 3yo´s. Now they rarely run in this race, and in fact there were no 3yo´s in the field last year and once again none this year. Obviously its status as a major test of strength between the generations no longer holds good. In addition, since de Beers pulled out two years ago, it has no sponsor, although the prize-money is still impressive, with the winner receiving over 600,000 euros.

This is still way below the sum received for winning the "Arc", Japan Cup, Breeders Cup Classic and other big autumn races. Howver the form if the race cannot be questioned, and last year´s winner and runner-up Dylan Thomas and Youmzain went on to fill the same places in the "Arc". This year´s running has a similar feel to it, as Youmzain (Mick Channon/ Richard Hughes) has another bite at the cherry, while the 2007 winning connections are represented by Duke of Marmalade (Johnny Murtagh), one of 3 Aidan O´Brien runners. Duke of Marmalade is by the same sire as Dylan Thomas - Danehill- and there are plenty of people who doubt his ability to stay a mie ad a half at this level. It is true that he ha been running over ten furlongs - winning 3 Group One´s this year at that distance - and this is his first attempt at today´s trip. However his shrewd connections seem to have no doubt that he will get the trip, and nor do we.

Aidan O´Brien has won just about everything in sight so far this year and another big win here seems highly likely. Apart from Youmzain, winner last time out of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, but normally more of a bridesmaid than a bride, (and who has forgotten his feeble effort in the Grosser Preis von Baden?) the main dangers would appear to be Sir Michael Stoute´s pair Ask (Ryan Moore) and Papal Bull (Olivier Peslier), as well as John Gosden´s Lucarno, who made all the running to win at Newmarket´s July meeting, and now meets Papal Bull and Petara Bay on better terms. Nor should one forget O´Brien´s second string Macarthur (Seamus Heffernan), who won at Royal Ascot in good style. With O´Brien also running no-hoper Red Rock Canyon as a pacemaker, tactics will be all-important, but one can only hope for a true-run race and that the best horse wins - which we firmly believe to be Duke of Marmalade.

York this afternoon

There is also a high class meeting at York this afternoon, with many of the top jockeys riding here rather than at Ascot, for example the Godolphin stable jockeys Frankie Dettori and Kerrin McEvoy. They partner Campanologist and Stage Gift resoectively in the mean feature, the Group Two York Stakes over 10 furlongs, which has attracted a strong field. John Gosden´s Pipedreamer (Seb Sanders), third in both the Prince of Wales and Eclipse, in which he finished in front of Campanologist and Multidimensional (Henry Cecil/ Ted Durcan), is the likely favourite. but Tajweed, last time a disappointing 8th in the Derby for which he was well backed, is another danger. However the Godolphin horses fare here - and we certainly expect Campanologist to be involved in the finish - their jockeys could still be in the winner´s enclosure with Crystal Capella (Sir Michael Stoute/ McEvoy) in the 10 furlongs handicap at 15.40, and Express Wish (Jeremy Noseda/ Frankie) in the 6 furlongs race at 16.45 both expected to run well - although there are 20 runners in the latter event, so it is wide open. Another one to watch here is cult horse Pawan (Ann Stokell), who ran a great race behind today´s top-weight Knot in Wood (Richard Fahey/ Jamie Moriarty) in a similar race at Hamilton last week.

4 meetings this evening

Plenty of racing this evening, with flat racung at Chepstow, Newmarket and York as well as a mixed meeting at Wexford in Ireland (3 flat races, 3 hurdles races and a bumper). There are maximum fields in all races at Wexford and the most interesting event is the 1 mile 5 furlongs maiden at 19.05 CET, which has attracted runners from top stables, notably Aidan O´Brien´s Honoria (Johnny Murtagh), who last ran in the Irish Oaks, and the Aga Khan´s Rayina (John Oxx/ Fran Berry). The 2yo maiden at Chepstow should mainly concern Stan´s Cool Cat (Paul Cole/ Chris Catlin) and Hay Fever (Eve Johnson Houghton/ Jim Crowley), both of whom have been runners-up in good company. At Newmarket´s traditional Friday evening meeting (followed by a pop concert) the best race is the conditions race over 1 1/2 miles at 21.10. Only 6 runners, but 3 of them are listed class at least - Godolphin´s Eastern Anthem (Frankie Dettori), out of their German-bred classic winner Kazzia, another German-bvred Tempelstern (Henry Cecil/ Ted Durcan) and John Dunlop´ s Munsef (Jimmy Fortune). Best race this evening is the 10 furlongs listed event for fillies and mares at York, in which CD specialist Flying Clarets (Richard Fahey/ Paul Hanagan) attempts to follow up her recent succes in the valuable John Smith´s Cup here and must face, among others, Sir Mark Prescott´ s Soft Morning (Seb Sanders) and Barry Hill´s 3yo Sugar Mint (Alan Munro), runner-up in the Cheshire Oaks but well beaten in the Oaks itself.

Ascot July meeting

Ascot´s July meeting starts today, ad although tomorrow´s card, haeded by the King George, is obviously much better, there is also some good racing this afternoon. Although the fields are mainly small, all races look highly competitive. Main event is the mile listed race for fillies at 16.20 CET, in which course specialist Barshiba (David Elsworth/ Richard Quinn) bids to go one better than her excellent second place at 50/1 to Archipenko in the Summer Mile here a fortnight ago. Bahara (Gerard Butler/ Richard Hughes) and the 3yo Festivale (John Dunlop/ Ryan Moore) -a winner at the royal meeting here - will provide stern opposition. 7 line up in the traditional Brown Jack Stakes, a 2 mile handicap at 16.55, and there will be a lot of interest in Wicked Daze (Seb Sanders), now that Sir Mark Orescott has his bstring in such good form. He has not run since February, but won 3 races from 4 starts on the all-weather during the winter. 11yo German-bred Caracciola (Nicky Henderson/ Eddie Ahern) loves this ground and cannot be ignored, while Colloquial (Henry Candy/ Fergaal Sweeney) meets thre latter on better terms for a narrow defeat last year and is another danger. Another trainer in excellent form is Andrew Balding, and his Buccellati (William Buick) can defy top weight in the 10 furlongs handicap at 17.30. There is also racing this afternoon, at a much lower level, at Thirsk and Wolverhampton. It is possibly significant that Godolophin have sent Kerrin McEvoy to Thirsk to partner the million dollar yearling Stalking Shadow in the first division of the 7 furlongs maiden at 14.30. He was third on his recent debut, and although backing hot favourites from the Godolphin stable has not been a path to punting riches, it is hard to see him getting beaten here. McEvoy can also win the 2yo fillies maiden on Paul Cole´s Dream in Waiting, his only other ride. Sir Mark Prescott can also score at Wolverhampton´s all-weather meeting, where both Haven´t a Clue (Jean-Pierre Guillambert) in the 6 furlongs nursery at 17.10 and Spanish Conquest (Rosie Jessop) in the 2 mile apprentice handicap have good prospects of success.

German runners at Vichy

The Vichy summer meeting continues today, and once again several German-trained horses take their chances. Easily the best of them is Dieter Fechner´s Marek (Franck Foresi), who however faces a tough task under top weight in the tiercé handicap over 1600 metres at 13.50. Conny Brandstätter saddles two 3yo´s in the 2400 metres races at 14.20 (colts) and 16.20 (fillies) in Sultan of Riad and Auenlove respectively, both ridden by Antoine Sanglard. In the latter race Manfred Weber´s Kazuma Kate (Dominique Boeuf) is another German-trained entry.

Irish racing this evening

There isa good flat card this evening at Leopardstown, and although there are only four tunners in each of the two group races, both should be hugely informative. The Tyros Stakes for 2yo´s over 7 furlongs at 19.25 CET sees the return of Jim Bolger´s smart filly Cuis Ghaire (Kevin Manning), already quoted as favourite for the 2009 1,000 Guineas. She was a good winner at Royal Ascot, but will need to be at her best to defeat Aidan O´Brien´s Rip van Winkle (Johnny Murtagh), who won on an objection at the Curragh on his debut and is highly rated by his shrewd connections. Both are by young superstar stallion Galileo. Aidan O´Brien is double-handed in the 10 furlongs Meld Stakes at 21.00, with King of Westphalia (Seamus Heffernan) expected to act as pacemaker for King of Rome (Johnny Murtagh), last seen in the German Derby at Hamburg. These two are 3yo´s while the other two runners are both tough 7yo´s - Kevin Prendergast´ s Mustameet (Declan McDonough) and Charles O´Brien´s Lord Admiral (Mick Kinane). Two likely winners at Limerick´s N.H. meeting are Jessica Harrington´s Desert Abbey (Andrew Leigh) in the 2 mile hurdle at 19.45 and Peter Casey´s Charlies First (Barry Geraghty) in the 2 3/4 mile chase at 20.20.

Doncaster, Folkestone and Kempton this evening

The difficulty racecouses have in filling conditions races at this time of year, especially on firm ground, is well illustrated by the class 3 mile race at 20.55 at Doncaster this evening. Only 5 have been declared, and of these 2 are doubtful runners, including Godolphin´s Army of Angels (Kerrin McEvoy), who only runs in the unlikely event of rain. In his absence Mark Johnston´s Dubai´s Touch should score a hollow victory. At Kempton´s all-weather meeting, the best race is probably the class 5 handicap over 1 1/2 miles at 21.20 with 13 runners. Plenty of chances here, and punters looking for a long shot should consider Birkspiel (Simon Dow/ Seb Sanders). A German group race winner 27 months ago, he is on a long losing run and has dropped to a very lenient rating as a result (69 compared to his best mark of 107). He has been well beaten on all recent starts, so should start at a good price, but he has never faced such weak opposition as he does this evening. The star at Folkestone is Sir Mark Prescott´s Aleatricis, who has already won 4 times this month, including at Yarmouth on Tuesday, and should make it 5 out of 5 under promising young apprentice Rosie Jessop in the 1 1/2 mile handicap at 19.30. He has to carry a 12lbs penalty but still looks a step ahead of the handicapper.

Bath, Sandown and Uttoxeter

Easily the best racing this afternoon is at Sandown, where there is a listed race for 2yo fillies over 7 furlongs at 16.20 CET. 6 of the 8 runners are last-time-out winners, of whom Honest Quality (Henry Cecil/ Ted Durcan) and Isabella Grey (Kevin Ryan/ Fergal Lynch) look the likeliest to score this time. Speed Song (William Haggas/ Ryan Moore) made a pleasing seasonal debut when winning last week over this CD and can keep up the good work under top weight in the 3yo handicap over 5 furlongs at 15.45. Frankie Dettori is in action here and has good chances in the last 3 races with Jeremy Noseda´s Visions of Johanna in the mile maiden at 16.55 and Mark Johnstón´s improving handicappers Hunting Country at 17.30 and Detonator half an hour later. On an uninspiring card at Bath only 3 turn out for the 2yo novice race at 16.30, where Mick Channon´s Lucky Leigh (Eddie Creighton), who has run well in two group races, looks nearly unbeatable. Amicable Terms (Rae Guest/ Greg Fairley) is in good form and should win the handicap for 3yo fillies at 18.10. The most interesting race at Uttoxeter is the opening novice hurdle over 2 3/4 miles which opens the card at 15.00. The Good Guy (Kim Bailey/ Tom Siddall) has won his last two races very easily but must carry a double penalty and has to give a huge amount of weight to Evan Williams´ Winter Star, with capable young jockey Donal Fahy taking another 5 lbs off. Winter Star has finished runner-up four times running, and although it is usually wise to be wary of runners with such form figures, he is so well treated by the weights that he must be the selection today.

Grand Prix de Vichy tonight

The only French racing this afternoon is a trotting meeting at Enghien, but much more significant is the evening flat meeting at Vichy, featuring the Grand Prix de Vichy, a Group Three over 2000 metres, the most important race of the Vichy meeting, which will be run at the late hour of 21.45 CET. André Fabre has a very strong hand here with Kocab (Stephane Pasquier) and the German-owned Aspectus (Johan Victoire). Victoire also partners Mezzolino for Dieter Fechner in a field of 20 for the 2000 metres claimer for 4yo´s at 22.15, but Fechner (who had a winner here yesterday) probably has better chances with Courthouse Steps (Dominique Boeuf) in a handicap over the same distance at 21.15.

Catterick, Lingfield (a.w.) and Worcester (N.H.)

Plenty of racing in the U.K. today, but all at a very modest level. With Sir Mark Prescott´s string now in top form, he can land a double at Catterick with Starry Sky in the 2yo maiden at 15.20 CET and top-weight Rapid Release in the 2yo handicap at 16.50, both with stable jockey Seb Sanders in the saddle. Best race here is the 5 furlongs handicap at 16.20. Top-weight Princess Ellis (Eric Alston/ David Allan) made most of the running until beaten into fourth in a much better race at Ayr on Monday and can possibly defy top weight, but Malapropism (Mick Channon/ Tony Culhane), who also ran well on Monday, in a lesser race at Beverley) also has good prospects at the weights. Prescott could also be on the mark at Lingfield´s all-weather meeting with Night of Fortune (Jean-Pierre Guillambert) in the second division if the 2yo maiden at 16.30. The 5 furlongs handicap at 17.30 is the best race here. Chjimes (Charles Dore/ Liam Keniry) is in good form and won over this CD in June, while Quality Street (Patrick Butler/ Richard Thomas) won this last year off a 10 lbs higher mark, but the one to beat is clearly Regal Royale (Peter Grayson/ Adam Kirby), who has win his last two races, including CD, and could still be well handicapped. Trainer David Pipe and jockey Tom Scudamore look the team to follow at Worcester´ s jumps fixture. They can take the novice hurdles at 15.40 and 16.10 respectively with Indian Pipe Dream and Mutual Friend - both penalised, but clearly the best on ratings - and also have a good chance in the handicap hurdle at 17.40 with Star of Germany, returning to hurdling after running over fences.

Leicester, Naas (Ireland) and Sandown this evening

Frankie Dettori, back from a week´s suspension, is in action at Sandown this evening and can take the 2yo maiden over 7 furlongs at 20.10 with Godolphin´s Combat Zone, who was a close 6th of 11 in a Newmarket maiden a fortnight ago. He also rides the promising Pegasus Again for terry Mills in the 3yo handicap over the same distance half an hour later, but the obvious favourite here is Sir Michael Stoute´s unbeaten Main Aim (Ryan Moore), who needs to settle better but is expected to go on to better things. At Leicester, the 12 furlongs handicap at 20.50 looks dfficult, as few of the 9 runners can be recommended on recent form. Top-weight Polish-bred Dzesmin (Rae Guest/ John Egan) has had no chance in better quality races, but has prosects in this grade, while Alfie Noakes (Amanda Perrett/ Jim Crowley) is very well in on his older form, but the well-bred Crystal Prince, a half-brother to german Group One winner Catella, can score on his first run for Charlie Longsdon. There are 14 runners in the 7 furlongs fillies handicap at 21.25, where last-time-out winners Desert Chill (Saeed bin Suroor/ Kerrin McEvoy) and Lekita (Walter Swinburn/ Saleem Golam) are just two oif several possibilities. There are 5 flat races and 2 hurdles races at Naas in Ireland. The final flat race is an apprentices handicap, but the other four could all go to the all-conquering Aidan O´Brien/ Johnny Murtagh team with Great Barrier Reef in the 6 furlongs maidane at 18.55, Bor to be King in the 2yo maiden over 6 furlongs at 19.25, debutant Masterofthehorse, an own brother to triple Oaks winner Alexandrova, in the mile maiden for 2yo´s at 21.00 and in the mile conditions race half an hour later Mystical Lady, who is dropping in grade.

German runners at Vichy

More German-trained runners today at Vichy´s summer meeting. In the opening tiercé handiap over 1600 metres at 13.50 Dieter Fechner´s Mosles (Dominique Boeuf) faces strong opposition but is expected to run well. Fechner and Boeuf also team up with Guldimix in the 2000 metres claiming race at 16.20, in which Magic Artiste (Waldemar Himmel/ Maxime Guyon) and Pitti Donna (Werner Hefter/ Alxi Badel) are also engaged. There is also trotting this afternoon at Le Mans and this evening at Cabourg.

Ballinrobe, Bangor and Great Leighs

A mixed bag this evening, with the Irish track Ballinrobe staging a mixed meeting (3 flat races, 4 over hurdles), N.H. racing at Bangor and all-weather flat racing at Great Leighs. At the last-named track, Sir Mark Prescott appears to have another handicap good thing lined up in Master of Arts (Seb Sanders), who has won all his 5 starts this season and looks certain to start at prohibitive odds in the mile handicap for 3yo´s at 20.20. However this race does not look so easy, and top-weight Kafuu (Simon Callaghan/ Neil Callan) looks a worthy opponent. The promising Freddie Tylicki can win the apprentice handicap at 19.20 with German-bred Kangrina, while Evelyn May (Barry and Michael Hills) looks another short-priced favourite in the 2yo maiden at 20.50. At Bangor, trainer Evan Williams can land a double with Sheshali (Donal Fahy) in the conditional jockeys handicap hurdle at 19.30 and Chrysander (Paul Moloney) in the novice chase half an hour later, where he has only Ouzbeck to beat. Another trainer with double prospects is Nigel Twiston-Davies, who can take the novice hurdle at 20.30 with Distiller and the handicap chase at 21.00 with Apollo Creed, who has won 4 of his last 6 races; Paddy Brennan is the jockey on both occasions. Best bet at Ballinrobe should be the Aga Khan´s Zamiyla (John Oxx/ Fran Berry) n the maiden race over 1 1/2 miles at 20.40. She has finished second in decent company on both her starts so far and stands out in this company.

Salisbury and Yarmouth

Flat racing this afternoon at Salisbury and Yarmouth, but mainly of poor quality, although there are some large fiels at Salisbury, where the class 4 handicap over 10 furlongs at 17.05 looks tricky, ass most of the 10 runners find it difficult to win. 9yo Del Mar Sunset (William Haggas/ Liam Jones) is typical - although he has shown consistent form, he has only scored once in the last 3 years, while Higgy´sBoy (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes), arguably the form choice here, is still a maiden. Wester Ross (James Eustace/ Hayley Turner) has only one carer win to his credit, but still has a major chance judging on his good effort this CD last time. The 7 furlongs rae for maiden fillies at 17.40 looks easier, although there are 15 runners. Emirates Lady (Saeed bin Suroor/ Ted Durcan), a good runner-up on the all-weather on his only start so far, and Provence (Barry Hills/ Richard Quinn), in the mony on 4 of his 5 starts, have clearly the best public form, while of the 6 debutants Ethaara (William Haggas/ Richard Hills) is much the most interesting. The fields are generally smaller at Yarmouth, and the quality even worse, but one horse stands out: Sir Mark Prescott´s Aleatricis (Seb Sanders) has already won 3 times this month and has found another easy task in the class 6 handicap for 3yo´s over 1 1 /2 miles at 16.15. The mile fillies handicap at 16.50 is more open. Sir Michael Stoute´s Striving (Ryan Moore) has been runner-up, althogh well beaten, the last twice and can possibly get her head in front this time. At 300,000 guineas, she cost exactly 100 times as much as Imperial Lucky (Mark Wallace/ Pat Cosgrave) who has run well all 3 starts this year and looks the main danger.

France today

The French cards today are also very low-key with flat racing from Vichy and trotting from la Capelle. The only German-trained runner at Vichy this afternoon is Dieter Fechner´s Lagatera (Dominique Boeuf), who contests the mile claiming race for 3yo´s at 15.50.

Beverley, Windsor and Ballinrobe (Ireland) this evening

Windsor stages its usual Monday evening fixture, where Kerrin McEvoy could be the jockey to follow. He rides Godolphin´s Sibi Saba, a 260,000 guineas breeze-up purchase, in the 10 furlongs maiden at 19.20 CET and the well-bred Zalloof (the dam was a Group One winner) for the same connections in the maiden for 2yo fillies an hour later, and both of these can win on their racecourse debuts. McEvoy also has a chance of taking the 6 furlongs handicap for 3yo´s on Paul Cole´s Harlech Castle, who is now being tried over a shorter distance. Lodi (Jon Akehurst/ Ian Mongan), an easy CD winner a month ago fromDunnó (Clive Cpox/ Philip Robinson) and now only 3 lbs worse off, looks the big danger. There is also evening racing at Beverley, where Handsome Falcon (Richard Fahey/ Freddie Tylicki) can repeat his 2007 victory in the 7 1/2 furlongs handicap at 20.30. The 5 furlongs handicap at 21.00 looks very open. Hotham (Neil Wilson/ Ashley Hamblett) ran well at Pontefract on Friday and despite the no. 1 draw, usually a big problem here, could well be involved, while course specialists Malapropism (Mick Channon/ Tony Culhane) and Rasaman (Kevin Ryan/ Joe Fanning) are others to consider. There is also a moixed meeting at Ballinrobe in Ireland with 4 flat races, 2 steeplechases and a bumper. Ruby Walsh could well win both chases with Willie Mullins´ much-improved 10yo Clear Gold at 20.40 and Eamonn Sheehy´s Holly Tree half an hour later.

Sprint races at Ayr

Easily the best race this afternoon in the U.K. is the class 2 handicap over 5 furlongs at 17.30 at Ayr. Like all these sprint handicaps with big fields (in this case 17), this looks very tricky, especially as the effect of the dtraw is unclear as the field may easily split into 2 groups. Three 3yo´s take on their elders and all 3 can be given a chance -Inxile (David and Adrian Nicholls), runner-up to the smart Corrybrough in a listed race at Sandown last time, Alan Berry´s Look Busy (Slade O´Hara), a CD listed winner and last time out fourth in a group race, and Hamish McGonagall (Tim Easterby/ David Allan), who scored nicely at Chester 10 days ago. Of the older horss, most of whom meet regularly in such events, attention should be paid to Whiskey Junction, whom Andrew Balding sends up on the long journey from Hampshire. He has won his last 4 races, all with today´s jockey Liam Keniry. The class 4 handicap over 6 furlongs half an hour earlier is also extremely difficult with 12 runners. Jim Goldie saddles two runners, both very consistent in this grade - John Keats (Daniel Tudhope) and Rothesay Dancer (Kelly Harrison) who beat Dorn Dancer (Derek Barker/ Neil Brown) by half a length over this CD last week; on 8 lbs better terms the latter can now take revenge. There is also racing from Yarmouth, where the 7 races are worth an average of 2500 euros to the winner and the quality is therefore low. However it could be significant that John Gosden sends the well-bred Teeky (Jimmy Fortune) to make her debut here in the 2yo maiden over 7 furlongs at 15.45. The 6 furlongs handicap at 16.45 could go to Quaruma (Jane Chapple-Hyam/ Frankie McDonald), but Gay Kelleways´s pair Punchiung (Hayley Turner), fourth against better opposition at Ascot last time, and course specialist Mugeba (Nicol Polli), who however will only run if it rains.

Haydock, Lingfield and Tipperary this evening

Best race at this evening´s 3 meetings is the class 3 conditions stakes over 7 furlongs at 20.40 CET at Haydock. Welsh Emperor (Tom Tate/ Neil Callan) has ideal conditions here and could make all the runnimng, but he has little in hand of Artimino (James Fanshaw/ Eddie Ahern), while the fly in the ointmet could be Mike de Kock´s Trinity College (Kevin Shea), having his first race since leaving Aidan O´Brien´s stable almost a year ago. At Lingfield, the firs 3 races are run on the all-weather and the last 3 on turf. The 7 furlongs race for 2yo maidens at 20.20 (turf) has attracted 17 runners, but on paper form should concern only Kentish Dream (Simon Callaghan/ Dane O´Neill) and Reaction (Mick Channon/ Darryll Holland). The Irish meeting at Tipperary features 4 flat races and 3 steeplechases. Assuming that Il en Reve, fourth last night at Kilbeggan, misses the race, the handicap chase at 20.00 looks at the mercy of Lukie Victor (Jessica Harrington/ Andrew Leigh), while Dark Artist (Noel Meade/ Denis O´Regan) looks almost unbeatable in the final chase at 22.00, being well clear on ratings.

Dragon Fly at Vichy

There is trotting today at Enghien and flat racing from Vichy, where the main feature is a listed race for 3 yo fillies over 2000 metres at 15.00. However from thr German point f view the most interesting raceis thre Prox de Cletmont-Ferrand an hour later, a conditions race for older horses over 2400 metres, in which Gestüt Park Wiedingen´s Dragon Fly (Jutta Mayer/ Ioritz Mendizabal) will attemp to make up for hisd disappointing performance in thr Langer Hamburger last time out. Although the trip is a bit short, he should have too much class for these opponents, best of which is Baron Georg von Ullmann´s El Comodin (André Fabre/ Stephane Pasquier)

Irish racing today

There is flat racing tida at Fairyhouse and a mixed meeting (4 flat races, 3 hurdles races and a bumper) at Tipperary, and it could be significant that Aidan O´Brin has sent his sdtAble jockey Johnny Murtagh to the latter track fir two rides. The well-bred Hail Caesar makes his debut in the 7 1/2 maiden race for 2yo´s at 15.15 CET, where he has David Wachman´s Miss Puss (Wayne Lordan) to beat, while Psalm, who has been running in much better races, should surely take the 9 furlongs maiden at 16.15. Easily the best jumps race is the valuable Grade 3 Gromes Hurdle at 16.45, which has attracted a strong field, headed by German-bred Kalderon (Tom Hogan/ David Casey) and Salford City (Gordon Elliott/ Nina Carberry), both very tough types but they will be pushed to concede weight to Megan´s Joy (Colm Murphy/ Davy Russell) and another ex-German Heavenly Blues (Ted and Ruby Walsh). Best event at Fairyhouse is the listed 6 furlongs race at 16.35. Lipocco (Ralph Beckett/ Declan McDonough), the lone foreign challenger, could take this back to England after his good effort at Royal Asco, but Dermot Weld´s ex-Italian Le Cadre Noir (Pat Smullen) looks a big danger after his excellent 2nd of 18 to Masta Plasta in a big handicap at the Curragh a week ago.

Newton Abbot, Redcar and Stratford

N.H. racing is centre stage in the U.K. today the flat racing at Redcar, despite some huge fields, is of very low quality. At Newto Abbot, the maiden hurdle over 2 3/4 miles at 15.30 has 15 runners, but on all known form should only concern the consistent Archduke Ferdinand (Alan King/ Robert Thornton) and Think Lucky (David Pipe/ Tom Scudamore), 2nd of 17 to a subsequent winner last time out. The class 3 handicap hurdle over 2 miles 3 furlongs an hour laer looks quite open, but the two lastr-time-out winners Viper (Reg Hollinshead/ David Dennis) and Mizen Raven (Alison Thorpe/ Richard Johnson) hold as good a chance as any. Paul Nicholls´ stable form has gone slightly off the boil, but his Qrackers (Sam Thomas) is still the most interesting runner of the day; he has won 3 of last 4 starts over hurdles with the greatest of ease and now makes his chasing debut in the beginners race at 17.00. At Stratfod, the class 3 nivice hurde at 16.40 looks the beste event. Charlie Mann´s Our Choice (Noel fehily) is talented and has won hius last 2 races, but now carries a doube penalty and it is not sure that he can concede the weight to Darfen (J.L.Flint/ Tom O´Brien), an easy CD winner last time, or the debutant Rapid City (Jenny Fielden/ Dominic Elsworth), who has the best flat form in the field. The class 3 handicap chase over 2 miles 7 furlongs at 17.10 could lie between top-weight, the very consistent Fieldsofclover (Emma Lavelle/ Jack Doyle) and bottom-weight Sea Wall (Jonjo O´Neill/ Tony McCoy). Bes race at Redcar is the class 4 handicap over 6 furlongs at 17.20. This looks very open, with the lightly-raced Prince Hamlet (Brian Smart/ Ted Durcan) and the much-improved Babyshambles (R.E.Barr/ Royston Ffrench) both holding chances, while Ann Stokell, who has a cult following and has her horses in great form at present, is represeented by Steel City Boy, runner-up at Hamilton last Thursday.

German runners at Maisons-Laffitte

Main feature at Maisons-Laffitte today is the Group Three Prix Messidor over a mile at 16.15. There are no German runners in the field, but several in the supporting programme: Matchpoint (Norbert Sauer/ Davy Bonilla) runs with bottom weight in the tiercé handicap over 1200 metres at 14.45, while Persico (Phillip Feddern/ Olivier Peslier) and Naxon (Werner Baltromei/ Dominique Boeuf) both look likely to start a long odds in thr second division at 17.45. Alpe d´Huez (Baltromei/ Boeuf) and Setareh (Petr Olsanik/ Andreas Suborics) both run in the 1600 metres event for 3yo´s at 16.45, while Olsanik and Subi are also represented by La Patron in the mile seller at 1.15, where Hana Mouchowa rides Hucknall for Torsten Angne. In the Messidor, André Fabre´s Crosspoint (Stephane Pasquier) is expected to start favourite; this half-brother to Rail Link has won his last 4 races, but may find this distance on the sharp side. Spirito del Vento (Jean-Marie Beguigne/ Olivier Peslier) is a specialist miler, while Freddie Head´s seasonal debutant Racinger (Davy Bonilla) can profit from the stromng stable form.

Newmarket and Ripon

The racing at Newmarket and Ripon this afternoon cannot match the quality on offer at Newbury, but Newmarket´s listed race over 1 1/2 miles for fillies and mares at 15.35 has attracted some interesting runners, notably the 3yo´s Dar Re Mi (John Gosden/ Richard Mullen), Arthur´s Girl (Geoff Wragg/ Steve Drowne) and Icon Project (Brian Meehan/ Alan Munro); the last two finished 2nd and 4th respectively in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot, but Icon Project had a bad run there and could reverse the placings now, while Dar Re Mi was regarded as a classic hope earlier in the season. Best of the older brigade should be Godolphin´s Folk Dance (Kerrin McEvoy), the highest-rated runner, whose form on very soft ground last time at Haysock can be ignored, and Ronaldshay (Richard hannon/ Jimmy Fortune), who has won her last 2 races. At Ripon, the best race is the class 2 handicap for 3yo´s over 1 1/2 miles at 17.00, and althoiugh there are only 6 runners, this is a very open affair. Top weight, the German-bred Laterly (Tom Tate/ Micky Fenton) from the family of Lomitas, looks a highly promising young stayer, but so does Detonator (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning), while they will both find it difficult to concede weight to Luca Cumani´s Celt (Pat Cosgrave), who is still a maiden but ran very well last time out.

Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury

There is also excellent flat racing tiday at Newbury, where te most valuable event is the Weatherbys Super Sprint for 2yo´s sold at auction last year at 16.25 CET over 5 furlongs. Richard Hannon has made a habit of winning this and now saddles no fewer than 6 of the 23 runners, including the likely favourite Penny´s Gift (Martin Dwyer), a good runner-up at Royal Ascot last time. She has a very light weight because of her cheap sales price, but even less weight is carried by another filly Caranbola (Mel Brittain/ William Buick), who has been first or second in all her 5 starts to date and looks a place banker. The unbeaten Senor Mistral (Kevin Ryan/ Neil Callan) looks best of the colts. The Group Three Hackwood Stakes over 6 furlongs at 15.20 could be dominated by the two 3yo´s in the field of 13, Corrybrough (Henry Candy/ Ryan Moore), a very promising young sprinter who has won his last 4 races, and Jeremy Noseda´s Strike the Deal (Seb Sanders), 5th in Royal Ascot´s Jersey Stakes and now dropping back in trip. Best of the older horses could be consistent but unlucky Beckermet (Roger Fisher/ Chris Catlin), who won this in 2005 but has struggled to win since, and Dark Missile (Andrew Balding/ William Buick), below par her last two starts but with a big chance on 2007 form. The listed race over 10 furlongs at 17.30 also looks quite open. Passae of Time (Henry Cecil/ Ted Durcan) nolonger seems to ber able to run up to her excellent 2007 form, while Spanish Moon (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan More) is unpredictable. The Godolphin pair Al Shemali (Richard Hills), who ran well in a similar race at Goodwood, and Happy Boy (Martin Dwyer), disappointing in England so far but impressive in Dubai, have their chances, but the one to beat is surely Luca Cumani´s Bankable (Dane O´Neill), who ran an excellent race under the circumstances when 4th in a huge field in the Royal Hunt Cup and should have no problem in taking this step up to listed class.

Big summer jumps meeting at Market Rasen

Market Rasen today stages one of the biggest jumps meetgings in Britain with an excellent card, which kicks off with the listed Summer Hurdle, a handicap over 2 miles 1 furlong at 15.05 with 17 runners. The four to concentrate on could be top-weight Sporazene (Paul Nicholls/ Ruby Walsh) - although the trainer thinks he cannot win off this rating -German-bred Moon Star (Paul Blockley/ Robert Thornton), who possibly needs softer going, Bureaucrat (Paul Hobbs/ Tom O´Brien), who won a flat handicap at Epsom on Derby Day last time, and bottom-weight Advancement (Luke Corcoran/ Timmy Murphy), a lightly-raced front-runner who has won his last 3 starts but faces far stronger opposition now. Another German-bred with good prospects is Landino (Sheena West/ Jamie Goldstein), who contests the class 2 handicap hurdle over 2 3/4 miles at 16.10, but he needs fast ground and That Look (Don Cantillon/ Dominic Elsworth) is pfererred, after winning his last two races in good style. The Summer Plate, a listed handicap chase over 2 3/4 miles at 16.40 is the main feature and has 16 runners. Main intertest will centre on the amazingly improved William Butler (Evan Williams/ Donal Fahy), who has won his last 4 races - all this month!- in tremendous fashion and could easily complete an ultra-quick fivetimer. However the opposition looks very tough and trainer Williams saddles two more, who he expects to run well, Warpath (Paul Moloney) and Mcevoy (Jamie Moore), while Peter Bowen, who has made this race his speciality, has 4 runners, including the last 2 winners Yes Sir (Tony McCoy) and Iron Man (Richard Johnson). Top-weight Il Duce (Alan King/( Robert Thornton) has been lightly-race the last 2 seasons, but is certainly good enough if in top form, while Paul Nicholls sounds much more optimistic about Oumeyade (Ruby Walsh) than he is about his chance in the first race.

German runners in France today

More German-trained runners in France today, with Mario Hofer´s Cherry Mandy (Johan Victoire) contesting a 1200 metres race for 3yo´s at 14.35 CET at Chantilly, while Werner Baltromei saddles Soterio in a 2100 mettres seller there with Dominique Boeuf in the saddle at 16.05. Boeuf also partners Hartmut Steguweit´s Kestria in a 1400 metres handicap for 4yo´s half an hour later. As the trip seems on the sharp side for Soterio, Kestria could be the best German chance here. There is also a mixed meeting at Le Lion d´Angers, where Regina Weissmeier runs Miss Flora in a steeplechase for 5yo´s over 3400 metres at 16.50 with son Fabien-Xavier in the saddle. This evening there is trotting from Cabourg.

Ireland and Scotland this evening

There is also N.H. racing this evening from Kilbeggan and flat racing from Hamilton. At the Scottish track, the main event is the valuable Scottish Stewards Handicap over 6 furlongs at 21.00 CET. Last year´s winner Knot in Wood (Richard Fahey/ Jamie Moriarty) has not won since then, but still has prospects of landing the double. Last time out winners Everymanforhimself (Kevin Ryan/ Neil Callan) and Pawan (Anne Stokell!) are others to consider. Also at Hamilton, Guest Connections (David and Adrian Nicholls) and Fire up the Band (Alan Berry/ Fergal Lynch) both reappear quickly after running here last night. As Guest Connections ran out an easy winner then, logically he should do so again. The best race at Kilbeggan is the Midlands National, a handicap chase over 2 3/4 miles at 20.55 with a maxmum field of 14 runners. Clarkey (Chrosty Roche/ Alan Crowe), who unseated his rider last time, can make up for this now, while ex-German Dow Jones (Mike Halford/ Ruby Walsh) is another one who failed to complete on his recent comeback from a long break, but has chances on his best form, as does course specialist Il en Reve (S.J.Treacy/ D.F.Flannery) and War of the World (Mouse Morris/ Davy Russell)

Newmarket and Pontefract this evening

Newmarket stage another of its July evening meetings today, followed by a pop concert, which always attracts a huge crowd. There are some large and very competitive fields, but Carniolan (Walter Swinburn/ Adam Kirby) looks a good bet to defeat 14 opponents in the 3yo handicap over 7 furlongs at 19.45 CET. He has a big weight, but the way he won at Ascot a week ago was most impressive. The best race on the card is the class 3 conditios stakes over 5 furlongs at 20.15. There are 12 runners, but the two top-weights Hoh Mike (Mchael Bell/ Jamie Spencer) and Peace Offering (David Nicholls/ Ted Durcan) stand out on form as they have both run well in group races. Hoh Mike finished in front of Peace Offering at Sandown in May, but there may be little between them toda. The nicely-named Cute Ass (Karl Burke/ Andrew Elliott), a 3yo filly receiving quite a bit of weight, is making her seasonal debut, but looked a very promising sprinter last year. The best race at Pontefract is also over 5 furlongs, this time a handicap at 20.35. With 15 runners this is the most difficult race of the day, but CDspecialist Mr. Wolf (Derek Barker/ Greg Fairley) is clearly one to be considered. The first time blinkers might help Green Park (Richard fahey/ Jamie Moriarty) and Efistorm (Charles Dore/ Hayley Turner) looks very dangerous after his good run at Ascot last week. The tough Dickie le Davoir, running for the 23rd time since Christmas (!) won here 10 days ago, but has been unplaced twice since. However he can never be discounted.

Newbury, Nottingham and Southwell

Another absurd fixture clash today, with racing at Nottingham and Southwell, who are practically next door to one another. However at the latter track it is one of their rare N.H. meetings, and Yellow Flag (Jonjo O´Neill/ Tony McCoy) loks the best bet on the card in the handicap chase at 16.30 CET after his very easy win at Stratford on Sunday. Jazz Dance (Charlie Mann/ Noel Fehily) can defy top weight in the handicap hurdle an hour later - he is unbeaten in two starts here, while Cee Cee Rider (Alan King/ Robert Thornton) looks another winning favourite in the 3 1/4 mile handicap hurdle at 18.00 after his good effort last week at Uttoxeter. Those looking for longshots should consider Moon Melody (Michael Sowerby/ Phil Kinsela) in the selling hurdle at 17.00. This half-brother to top German filly Moonlady has been very disappointing so far, but meets very modest opponents today. At nearby Nottingham, Ted Durcan can win the maiden race for 2yo´s at 15.45 with Brian Smart´s Master Rooney, a 300,000 guineas yearling who made an excellent debut and has Michael Jarvis´ Zuzu (Philip Robinson) to beat, and the 3yo maiden at 16.50 with Henry Cecil´s Montbretia, where Godolphin newcomer Lura (Daragh O´Donohoe) looks the main danger. The best race at Newbury is the class 3 conditions stakes for 3yo´s over 7 furlongs at 16.40. Mick Channon´s Atlantic Sport (Richard Hughes), who cost half a milliom dollars as a yearling and has won 2 of his 3 starts, is the obvious favourite, but faces strong opposition from Godolphin´s Fateh Field (Kerrin McEvoy) and Kevin Ryan´s front-runner Cobo Bay (Darryll Holland)

This evening at Bath, Doncaster and Sandown

Most interesting race at this evening´s 3 flat meetings is the 6 furlongs novice stakes for 2yo´s at 20.05 CET at Doncaster, where no fewer than 5 of the 8 runners are still unbeaten. Whoever wins this has to be quite useful, and Queen of Thebes (Gary Moore/ William Buick) and Prize Point (Kevin Ryan/ Richard Mullen) seem the most likely candidates. The class 3 fillies handicap over 7 furlongs at 21.10 is wide open: consistent Cha Cha Cha (Kevin Ryan/ Neil Callan), lightly raced Persian Sea (Michael Jarvis/ Philip Robinson) and Just Like a Woman (Michael Bell/ Hayley Turner), runner-up her last 3 races, look a likely trio. At Sandown the card is relatively weak for the course, and the mile handicap for 3yo´s at 20.15 is the most interesting event. It is wode open too with all 12 runners holding some sort of chance. Jeremy Noseda´s stable has ben out of form, but it will still be no surprise if The Which Doctor (Tom Queally) proves good enough; otherwise Serious Choice (John Boyle/ Ryan Moore), Storm Sir (Brian Meehan/ Richard Hughes) and Sacrilege (David Elsworth/ Martin Dwyer) are the three for the short list. At Bath, German-bred Misaro can score for the fourth time in his last 5 outings by defying top-weight in the 6 furlongs hanmdicap at 20.25. However it should not be overlooked that Bahamian Ballet (Ed McMahon/ Greg Fairley) meets him on 12 lbs better terms for a half length beating earlier at Salisbury, while the 9yo grey Pic Up Sticks (Brendan Powell/ Richard Kingscote) has dropped to a very favourable handicap mark. Yamal (Mark Johnston/ Greg Fairley) and Heaven (Peter Makin/ Darryll Holland) are two 3yo´s that can continue their winning run despite a high weight at 20.55 and 22.00 respectively.

Leicester, Hamilton and Cartmel

This afternoon´s flat racing in the U.K. comes from Leicester, Hamilton and Cartmel (N.H.). Some large fields, but only 4 seem likely to line up in Leicester´s class 3 conditions race for 3yo´s over 10 furlongs at 16.50 CET, the best race of the day on ratings. Henry Cecil´s German-owned Ancient Lights (Ted Durcan) made a pleasing debut when winning at Newmarket in May and may be able to cope with this step up in class, but in theory he is held by John Gosden´s Pampas Cat (Jimmy Fortune), beaten less than 5 lengths in a listed race at Royal Ascot last time. Andrew Balding has his string in excellent form and 9yo Irony (David Probert) may be good enough to defeat 14 opponents in the 7 furlongs handicap at 16.15, where last-time-out winners Manchurian (Mark Walace/ Jamie Sperncer) and Eastern Empire (Walter Swinburn/ Adam Kirby)seem the obvious dangers. At Hamilton, the 6 furlongs handicap at 17.35 looks the best betting race on the card and there is little to choose between top-weight Westport (Kevin Ryan/ Colin Gillies), Grazeon Gold Blend (John Quinn/ Robert Winston) and last-time-out winners Steel City Boy (cult trainer-jockey Ann Stokell) and Optical Illusion (Richard Fahey/ Tony Hamilton). At Cartmel there could be another Irish benefit, with trainers Gordon Elliott and James Lambe each possibly landing a double. Elliott´s best chances are Bauhaus at 15.30 and Lydon House at 16.05, while Lambe can score with Commanche Topgun at 17.15 and Yachvili at 18.20; all four will be partnered by Tony McCoy.

Irish racing today

Today is the fourth and final day of Killarney´s July meeting and this time racing is in the afternoon. Aus usual ot is a mixed meeting wiuth 3 races over hurdles and 3 on the flat, plus a bumper. Most interesting race over sticks is te opening novice hurdle at 15.25 CET, which could be dominated by the 2 penalised runners, Pillat of Hercuiles (Pat Hughes/Ruby Walsh) and The God of Love (Philip Rothwell/ Davy Russell). The former pulled up lame last time after winning his 2 previous races, so preference is for the latter, an easy winner last time. An interesting runner on the flat here is ex-German Simone Boccanegra (no prizes for guessing his breeder!), who carries top weight in the staying handicap at 18.05. He has not actually run on the flat for over 2 years, but gas sme fair performances over hurdles to his credit. At Fairyhouse this evening, the classiest event is the 6 furlongs conditions race at 19.15. Miss Gorica (Joanna Morgan/ Declan McDonough) and Akua´ Ba (Jim Bolger/ Kevin Manning) are best on ratings, but the improving The Emperor Nero (David Wachman/ Johnny Murtagh) rates a big danger after his asy winner in a Naas maiden 22 days ago. Murtagh also partners Aidan O´Brien´s Love to Dance in the 10 furlongs fillies maiden at 21.25, and connections will be hoping she can finally win a race, as she is a half-sister to Dylan Thomas. She was beaten a long way at the Curragh last weekend, but her previous form would be good enough; however there are a couple of well-bred newcomers lurking in the field of 18, so a win is no foregone conclusion.

German runners at Maisons-Laffitte

The run of success of German-trained runners in France can continue at this afternoon´s meeting at Maisons-Laffitte. Werner Baltromei, who landed a double at Chantilly on Sunday, saddles Sumatra Tiger in the opening 2200 metres race for unraced 3yo s at 14.05. He will be partnered by ominique Boeuf, who also rides Le Big for Uwe Stoltefuss in the mile conditiins race for older horses at 16.05, but this one will have to be at his best to hold Baron Ullmann´ s Salden Licht (André Fabre/ Stephane Pasquier). In the claiming race over 3100 metres at 16.35, Pavel Vovcenko saddles the distance specialist Kasus, a winner of two of his last 3 races in France. However he has to do without his usual jockey Filip Minarik and will today be ridden by Andreas Göritz.

Kempton, Killarney and Leopardstown this evening

There are two eening meetinsg in Ireland, Killarney (the third day of their July meeting, with 3 flat races, 3 N.H. and one bumper) and Leopardstown, as well as from the London all-weather track at Kempton, where unusually a trotting race is also on the card. At Kempton, the mile handicap at 20.50 CET looks very open with a maximum field of 14 runners; the German-breds Napoletano (Simon Dow/ Neil Callan) and Kaballero (Steve Gollins/ Jamie Jones) are both last-time-out winners and could be in the shake-up again. Another ex-German horse, Green Mile (Robbie Colgan), can score for trainer Tony Martin in the handicap hurdle at 19.45 at KIllarney; the trainer has done very well with his German imports, e.g. Arc Bleu. The 1 3/4 miles maiden at 20.15 is a flat race but is contested by several N.H. horses, notably Jessica Harrington´s Dreamy Gent (Andrew Leigh), who has 4 hurdles wins and a chase win on his CV. Hottest favourite at Kilarney will almost certainly be Eoin Grifin´s Up to the Hilt in the lasdies INH flat race at 21.45, who not only has the best form but is also ridden by the most successful lady jockey Nina Carberry. Her brother Paul incidentally has been stood down for 3 weeks following a naty fall here yesterday, which left him concussed. The best racing this evening takes place at Leopardstow, there the main feature is a 7 furlongs Group Three race for 2yo fillies. David Wachman has his string in good form and saddles 2 of the 6 runners, the better of which is undoubtedly Chintz (Johnny Murtagh). However she has two tough opponents in Aaroness (Jim Bolger/ Kevin Manning) and Luminous Eyes (Dermot Weld/ Pat Smullen), both of whom won their maidens by 5 lengths last time out. The Weld/ Smullen team also has good prospects of landing the main supporting feature, a listed race over 1 3/4 miles at 22.00, with Profound Beauty, but battle-hardened German-bred Peppertree Lane (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning), third to Septimus last time in the Curragh Cup, can take this despite his huge weight.

N.H. racing at Uttoxeter and Worcester

There is jumps racing in Britain this afternoon at Uttoxeter and this evening at Worcester, with many jockeys riding at both meetings, such as Tony McCoy, who has several interesting mounts. However trainer Evan Williams and jockey DP Fahy look the team to follow at Uttoxeter, where William Butler looks likely to win his fourth chase in the space of 11 days at 17.10 CET and Winter Star, who can get off the mark for the same connections half an hour later in the maiden hurdle. At Worcester, trainer Alison Thorpe, currently in great form, can follow suit and saddle the winners of the maiden hurdle at 19.35 in St.Mellion Freeway (Noel Fehily), runner-up this CD on his only British start, and Nortonthorpe (Charlie Poste), an easy winner on Monday at Newton Abbot, in the handicap hurdle at 22.05

Catterick and Lingfield

Flat racing this afternoon at Catterick and Lingfield, and at the fomrre track the 5 furlongs handicap for 3yo´s at 16.30 looks quite tricky, even though there are only 7 runners. Discanti (Tom Easterby/ David Allan) is the likely favourite after winning 2 of his last 3 races but Know no Fear (John Quinn/ Ronert Winston) mees him on 12 lbs better terms than last time and could well reverse the form. Top-weight Sudden Impact (Paul Green/ Russell Kennemore) ran second at Haydock on Sunday, but that was over 6 furlongs and this trip is possibly too sharp. His jockey has a better winning chance half an hour later with Nelson´s Column, trained by George Moore and dropping in class in the 1 1/2 mile claimer. At Lingfield, where the first 3 races are run on turf and the last 3 on the all-weather, the most interesting event is the Paul Kelleway Memorial over a mile at 17.20 and it would certainly be appropriate if his daughter Gaye should win. She saddles two runners, Vortex (Jimmy Quinn), a veteran all-weather specialist who seems to have lost form and will be retired after this race (and 17 career wins) and the lightly-raced Maydan Dubai (John Egan), but the one to beat is surely Sir Mark Prescott´s Mster of Arts (Seb Sanders), unbeaten in 4 starts this year, including this CD. The most interesting turf race here is the opening 9 furlongs maiden at 15.20, which features Plavius (Saeed bin Suroor/ Frankie Dettori), yet another wildly expensive Godolphin purchase (nine million dollars!), who was a total flop o his only racecourse outing so far, last October at Leicester. Recent form points to another Maktoum runner, Sheikh Hamdan´s Talayeb (Marcus Tregoning/ Richard Hills), runner-up at Newmarket 25 days ago, but there will be long faces if Plavius fails again.

France today

There is flat racing in France today at Chateaubriant and Dieppe, and trotting this evening at Cabourg. While the racing is of mainly poor quality, there will be plenty of German interest in the Dieppe meeting, with 5 German-trained runners attempting to continue the recent run of success of horses trained in this country. Christophe Soumillon, fresh from his brilliant success on Montmartre last night in Longchamp, partners Gainsbury for Pavel Vovcenko over 100 metres at 16.05 - also contested by Doris Smith´s recent winner Nadal (William Mongil) - and The Jay Factor for Mario Hofer in the 1400 metres claimer at 17.35. Hofer also saddles Mannico in a claimer for lady riders with Manon Scandella aboard, while Ralf Rohne´s Danawind (Mongil) runs in the 3yo handicap over 1800 metres at 16.35.

This evening at Great Leighs and Yarmouth

More bad planning in Britain this evening, with meetings at Great Leighs (all-weather) and Yarmouth, only a few miles apart. Yarmouth has been severely criticised for its poor level of prize-money, and the 6 races on this evenings card are only worth about 20,000 euros between them. All the more surprising therefore that Sir Michael Stoute sends his well-bred 2yo Mirrored (240,000 guineas foal!) to run in the opening maiden at 19.20 CET with Kerrin McEvoy. The races at Great Leighs look much better, and here it is surprising to see Frankie Dettori riding Greek Renaissance for Godolphin in the 6 furlongs conditions race at 20.40. Frankie´s only mount of the evening, Greek Renaissane would win this on 2007 form, when he was a group winner, but was a disappointment on his only 2008 race. All-weather specialists Came Back (Kevin Ryan/ Fergal Lynch) and Ceremonial Jade (Marco Botti/ John Egan) will not make it easy for him. The mile handicap half an hour later looks very tricky. 8yo Binanti (Paul Chamings/ George Baker) has an excellent chance on his penultimate form, but the lightly-raced 3yo´sFr Dominic (Ralph Beckett/ Seb Sanders) and especially bottom-weight, Simon Callaghan´s High Standing, both look very dangerous. The latter will be ridden by Jamie Spencer, who has partnered him to all his 3 career victories so far.

Killarney festival in Ireland

Today is the second day of the 4-day-July festival at Killarney, always one of the most enjoyable Irish meetings, even if not up to the standard of the big Galway fixture in a fortnight´s time. There are 3 N.H. and 4 flat races on this evenings card and the best bet over jumps could be Willie Mullins´ Uncle Junior (Ruby Walsh) in the novice chase over 2 3/4 miles at 20.00 CET; he was pulled up last time in a valuable race at Auetuil, but had not been disgraced in his previous runs at Cheltenham and Punchestown against much stronger opposition than he meets now. Only 4 turn out for the Killarney Race for 3yo´s over 11 furlongs at 20.30, which should go to Dermot Weld´s Theocritus (Pat Smullen). Ex-German Maximo has been very consistent without winning in Ireland, and can remedy that situation by taking the handicap over 8 1/2 furlongs at 21.30, while half an hour later Tuscan Evening (John Joseph Murphy/ Seamus Heffernan) looks a near certainty in the fillies maiden over the same trip; she was disqualified after finishing second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas in May, form which gives her about 30 lbs in hand of today´s opponents.

Beverley and Brighton

Some large fields but mainly very low quality racing this afternoon at Beverley and Brighton. Although Beverley is best known for its 5 furlongs sprints, today´s main event is a 2 mile handicap at 16.45 CET with 12 runners. Duty Free (Charlue Egerton/ Joe Fanning), who ran well for a long way in the Ascot Stakes, is an obvious contender, but this is a very open affair. Mister Arjay (Bran Ellison/ Tony Hamilton) beat the super-consistent Hits only Vic (Declan Carroll/ David Allan) by 3/4 length in a similar race last week, but on 6lbs better terms, the runner-up may reverse the placings. However te one to beat could Thewhirlingdervish (Tim Easterby/ Duran Fentiman), who won the race lastr year ad appears very well handicapped. At Brighton, Dianes Choice (Gaye Kelleway/ Ahmed Ajtebi), a recent winner over 5 furlons, can score agin over a furlog further at 16.00, while the same applies to top-weight Ornella (Hughie Morrison/Travis Block) in the apprentice handicap at 18.00, who won here last week over 10 furlongs and now steps up to 1 1/2 miles.

Le 14 juillet at Longchamp

Today is the biggest holiday of the year in France, and Longchamp, which exceptionally races in the evening, has a first class card headed by the Group One Grand Prix de Paris fo3 3yo´s over 2400 metres at 20.20 CET. How that the Prix du Jockey Club is run oiver a much shorter distance, this is almost in effect the French Derby, and Aidan O´Brien, who has had such an amazing run if success in classic races this season (including yesterday) saddles 3 runners, with stable jockey Johnny Murtagh partnering Alessandro Volta. This one blotted his copybook badly when swerving all over the track in the Irish Derby 3 weeks ago, but if he keeps straight, has an obvious chance to give the stable their 14th Group One success of the season. André Fabre and Alain de Royer-Dupré each saddle two runners, and Prospect Wells (Olivier Peslier) and Montmartre (Christophe Soumillon) are respectively their main hopes and probably the best chances of a French victory. Doctor Fremantle (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore), 4th at Epsom, is a big danger to all. Main supporting feature is the Group Two Prix Maurice de Nieuil for older horses over 2600 metres at 19.45, where there is a very strong German challenge. First Stream (Mario Hofer/ Christophe Lemaire), Brisant (Michael Trybuhl/ William Mongil), Caudillo (Dr. Bolte/ Jean-Pierre Cavalho) and Poseidon Adventure (Wolfgang Figge/ Dominique Boeuf) are all trained in Germany, while Avantia Polonia (Davy Bonilla) is now with the in-form Freddie Head and Noble Prince (André Fabre/ Stephane Pasquier) is also German-bred.

Ireland today

There is Irish racing this afternoon at Downpatrick and this eveing at Killarney, both mixed meetings with large fields of mainly moderate performers. Michael Grassick can land a double at Downpatrick with Trikirk (Paul Carberry) in the maiden hurdle at 15.30 CET, who is making his N.H. debut but has the best flat form of these, and Acclaimed Piper (Keagan Latham) in the 11 furlongs maden on the flat at 17.00. He has so far not finished in the first four, but has been running in better company and today´s opposition does not look strong. At Killarney, the most interesting race is the 2 miles 1 furlong case at 20.10, even though it has easily the smallest field. Ruby Walsh partners hat-trick seeking Irish Invader, presumably the better of Willie Mullins´ two runners, while top-weight French Accordion (Paul Nolan/ Joe Cullen) and the improving Emotional Article (Tom Taaffe/ Adrian Joyce) also have their chances. Ex-German Spiriton, well-beaten on his only flat start in Ireland, has useful form over hurdles and can defy top weight in the flat handicap over 11 furlongs at 21.10.

This evening at Windsor and Wolverhampton

The two class 4 handivaps are the most interesting events at Windso´s usual Monday evening fixture. The 3yo race over 1 1/2 miles at 20.00 CET has attracted some useful types, including Sir Mark Precsott´s last-time-out winner Altitude (Seb Sanders), a half-brother to multiple Group One winners Albanova and Alborada. First Avenue (Michael Jarvis/ Philip Robinson), placed all starts this year, and Tarkheena Prince (Alan Swinbank/ Kerrin McEvoy) head the opposition. Half an hour later, the fillies mile handicap looks very tricky. Consistent Montrachet (Michael Bell( Jamie Spencer), whose last win was over this CD a year ago, now faces the 3yo´s Trumpet Lily (Johnny Portman/ Jim Crowley), still a maiden but a very good performance last time out, as well as recent winner La Coveta (Brian Meehan/ Gabriel Hannon). At Wolverhampton, Willie Ever (Brian Ellison/ Jean-Pierre Guillambert), who has won his last 2 races very easily, including CD, should be hard to beat in the 7 furlongs handicap at 21.50; top-weight Chjimes (Charles Dore/ Liam Keniry) is the main danger.

Ayr and Newton Abbot

N.H. racing today at Newton Abbot in the extreme south-west, while the only flataction this afternoon comes fromAyr on the Scottish west coast. It could be significant that John Gosden sends the proniding Capucci (Robert Havlin) on the long hourney from Newmarket, and this well-bred colt, who cost 220,000 guineas as a yearlinf, can defY to-weight in the 3yo mile handicap at 17.10. The 6 furlongs fillies handicap half an hour earlier looks mich more open. Dorn Dancer (Derek Barker/ Fergal Lynch) has been very consistent this year and always goes well here, whie Rothesay Dancer (Jim Goldie/ Daniel Tudhope) has been runner-up three times running but is probaby better at the minimum trip. Gap Princess (Richard Fahey/ Jamie Moriarty), first or second on her last 4 starts, is the obvious danger. At Newton Abbot, the beginners chase at 15.50 could be informative. On hurdles form this should mainly concern Nanga Parbat (Paul Nicholls/ Sam Thomas) - so far unconvincing over fences-, Osprey View (Nigel Twiston-Davies/ Paddy Brennan), runner-up his only chase start, and Tagula Blue (Ian Williams/ David Dennis), who fell early on his chasing debut. Perhaps Nanga Parbat can be gien another cance, and his trainer, who has an excellent summer strike rate, can also take the 3 1/4 mile handicap chase at 16.50 with top-weight Kaldouas (Tony McCoy), despite a massive 25 lbs concession to Hermano Cordobes (Philip Hobbs/ Richard Johnson). Consistent hunter-chaser Take the Stand, in younger days much better than these, is also in with a chance.

Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly

The Group One Prix Jean Prat for 3yo´s over a mile at 14.45 this afternoon at Chantilly has attracted a very strong field of 16 runners, 6 of them from England. It also seems quite likely that the major part of the prize-money will cross the channel as the British challengers seem to hold the best cards. Likely favourite is John Gosden´s consistent Raven´s Pass (Jimmy Fortune), who certainly deserves a Group One success after several placings in top company. Winker Watson (Peter Chapple-Hyam/ Jamie Spencer) would have a great chance on 2007 form, but has had his problems and not run now for a year. Rio de la Plata (Saeed bin Suroor/ Frankie Dettori) and German-owned Kandahar Run (Henry Cecil/ Ted Durcan) are two Derby flops who found the trip too far at Epsom and should be much better suited by today´s distance. Best of the locals should be Carlos Laffon-Parias´ Falco (Olivier Peslier), who was an easy winner of the French 2,000 Guineas but seems well held by Raven´s Pass on their Royal Ascot running. There are several German-trained runners in the supporting programme: Shawnee Saga and Masquenada (both trained by Werner Baltromei and partnered by Dominique Boeuf) run in 3yo races over 2400 and 1600 metres at 15.15 and 17.00 respectvely, while Miroslav Rulec, who scored at Deauville on Friday, saddles Shishangaan (Stephane Pasquier) in an 1100 metres race at 16.25 and Hans Blue´s Maybe (Johan Victoire) is possibly the best chance of a German winner in the 2000 metres claimer for 3yo´s at 17.35

Haydock, Perth and Stratford

Racing in Britain today is very low-key, although the N.H. meetings at Stratford and Perth have some interesting aces. At the Scottish track, there could well be a seroes of Irish-trained winners, with Gordon Elliott (together with jocjey Paul Carberry) and John Lambe (Richard Johnson) both challenging in several races. They gop head to head in the handicap hurdle at 16.40 CET with Ben Britten (Lambe) and Cluthe Bay (Elliott) in opposition, while Elliott can go close with Franc Villez at 15.40 and Paradse Bay at 17.15 and Lambe can counter with Haiban at 15.10 and Geman-bred Classic Mooin an hour later. At Stratford, William Butler (Evan Williams/ DPFahy) can complete a quick July hat-trick in the Summer Cup (handicap chase) at 16.30, while the Summer Salver (handicap hurdle) half an hour later looks wide open; King´s Head (Gary and Jamie Moore), Pilkca (Declan Carrol/ Sidan Coleman), both of whom have run wll on the flat recently, and last-time-out DC winner Iffy (Richard Lee/ Robert Thornton) are three for the short list. Ex-German Commemoration Day (Nigel Twiston-Davies/ Paddy Brennan) has good prospects in the novice chase at 17.35; Kilcrea Asla (Tom George/ Tony McCoy) is the obvuous danger. At Haydock, the two 6 furlong handicaps are the most interesting races. Top-weight Geojimali Jim Goldie/ Tom Eaves) can take the 16.20 race, but 9yo Balakiref (Michael Dods/ Tom Eaves), who will relish the heavy going, looks dangerous off a light weight. In the event for 3yo´s half an hour later, Richard Fahey and Freddie Tylicki can follow up yesterday´s big York success with Mister Hardy. Lightly-raced Yahwudhee (Peter Chapple-Hyam/ Adrian McCarthy) and Kashimin (Alan Swinbank/ Paul Mulrennan) are just two of several threats.

Irish Oaks day at the Curragh

Easily the most important race today in Britain and Ireland is the Group One Irish Oaks at 17.10 at the Curragh. The fillies classic has a strong field with 14 runners, though it is a bit disappointing that neither of the easy winners of the English and French Oaks line up. However the form of those races is well represented, with Moonstone, one of 6 (!!) Aidan O´Brien entries but the choice of stable jockey Johnny Murtagh, Katiyra (John Oxx/ Mick Kinane) and Chinese White (Dermot Weld/ Pat Shanahan), respectively 2nd, 3rd and 9th at Epsom, in the field, as well as Gagnoa (André Fabre/ Seamus Heffernan), 3 lengths runner-up at Chantilly to Zarkawa, who is on all the evidence so far the best filly in Europe, if not the world. It is interesting that Dermot Weld´s stable jockey Pat Smullen has chosen to ride Mad about You, runner-up last time in the Pretty Polly over 10 furlongs. It would be a major surprise if the winner does not come from those mentioned above (although Aidan O´Brien has frequently won such races with his second or third strings, e.g. Frozen Fire in the Irish Derby), and we give slight preference to Katiyra, whose trainer has an excellent record with staying fillies and seemed to be ill-suited by the track at Epsom. The Anglesey Stakes (Group Three) for 2yo´s over 6 furlongs at 16.35 is the main supporting feature and Aidan O Brien supplies 3 of the 7 runners, all previous winners, with Johnny Murtagh having chosen Westphalia. However the two to beat here are Intense Focus (Jim Bolger/ Kevin Manning) and Bushranger (David Wachman/ Wayne Lordan), both runners-up at Royal Ascot. The importance of black type for well-bred fillies is evident in the field for the listed 9 furlongs race at 17.45, weith no fewer than 20 runners. Once again O´Brien is mob-handed with 4 runners, all 3yo´s, with Murtagh aboard Psalm, who is best in at the weights according to official ratings. Zafayra, representing the same owner-trainer-jockey team as Katiyra looks the main danger. There is also N.H. racing today in Ireland at Sligo, with 6 hurdles races and one bumper.

France today

The only German-trained runner in France today is Mario Hofer´s King of Sydney (Johan Victoire), who contests the opening race at Deauville this afternoon for unraced 2yo´s at 13.55 over 1400 metres. The main race oin the card is the listed race for 3yo fillies over the same trip at 16.00, which looks very open. Christophe Soumillon´s mount Oceane Music is unbeaten but stepping up in class. There is also trotting at Enghien

Hamilton and Salisbury this evening

This evening´s meetings at Hamilton and Salisbury cannot measure up to the high standard of the afternoon cards, but there is an interesting 7 furlongs race for 2yo maidens at 20.45 at Salisbury. Cannwin (Mick Channon/ Eddie Creighton) has finished third on both his starts, but arguably the two fourth places of Tudor Key (Amanda Perrett/ Jim Crowley) from an excellent Röttgen family, represent better form. However there are also some interesting newcomers here, notably Prince Siegfried (David Probert) from the in-form Andrew Balding stable. Althoiugh Balding´s 2yo´s usually come on a lot for their first run, it should not be forgotten that his father Ian sent Mill Reef to this track for his raceccourse debut.

Ireland today

It is quite unusual to have two flat meetings the same afternoon in Ireland but that is the case today with a big card at the Curragh (the first day of their Irish Oaks meeting) and also racing on the all-weather at Dundalk. This has put a lot of pressure on jockey bookings, and it is certainly significant that Aidan O´Brien sends his second jockey Seamus Heffernan to Dundalk to partner Great Barrier Reef in the 3yo maiden at 17.15 CET and Greatwallofchina in the 7 furlongs conditions race half an hour later; both will start a short-priced favourite. At the Curragh, O´Brien can take the Group Three International Stakes over 9 furlongs at 17.30 with Plan (Johnny Murtagh), although strictly on the book he is held by Lisvale (David Wachman/ Wayne Lordan); Kevin Prendergast´s tough Mustameet (Declan McDonough) is another to consider here. The Group Three Minstrel Stakes over 7 furlongs half an hour earlier can go to Peter Chapple-Hyam´s Al Qasi (Mick Kinane), who should prove too strong for ex-French Garnica (David Nicholls/ Pt Smullen) and ex-German Raptor (Karl Burke/ Declan McDonough)

Chester, Nottingham and York

Today´s meeting at York is sponsored by brewery John Smith, and the John Smith´s Cup,a 10 furlongs handicap at 16.15 CET, is the big betting race of the day. 19 likely runners and with the ground heavy after yesterday´s incessant rain, mudlarks will be in demand. Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum has 3 live chances here- likely favourite Mutajarred (Wiölliam Hagas/ Richard Hills), Heaven Knows ( Haggas/Michael Hills) and Ezdiyaad (Marcus Tregoning/ Martin Dwyer), all of whom go well enough in these cnditions, while local trainer Richard Fahey saddles no fewer than 5 runners, including Charlie Tokyo (Jamie Moriarty) and Flying Clarets (Freddie Tylicki), who were first and second last year, also on heavy ground but over a furlong shorter. The listed handicap over 1 3/4 miles at 16.50 is a major trial for the Ebor and the interesting one here is Godolphin´s Eastern Empire (Saeed bin Suroor/ Ted Durcan), who is out of German-bred dual classic winner Kazzia, who loved soft ground. Godolphin also have Empire Day (George Baker), coming off a 600 day break, entered, while Michael Bell´s Gull Wing (Steve Drown) is another to consider. At Chester two listed races are the main features. It looks like a veteran´s event in the 7 furlongs race at 15.25, with 9yo´s Vanderlin (Andrew Balding/ William Buick) and Welsh Emperor (Tom Tate/ Micky Fenton) and 8yo Blythe Knight (John Quinn/ Pat Cosgrave) all fancied, but possibly one of the 2 3yo s in the field Tasdeer (Michael Jarvis/ Dane O´Neill) can strike a blow for the yxounger generations. The two likely favourites for the 5 furlongs sprint at 16.35, Borderlescott (Robin Bastiman/ Pat Cosgrave) and Oldjoesaid (Henry Candy/ Dane O´Neill) are both badly drawn, so possibly Hoh Hoh Hoh (Richard Price / Chris Catlin) can take advantage. At Nottingham, trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam and jockey Tom Queally can land a double with Select in the 2yo fillies maiden at 15.00 and Maria di Scozia in the 1 3/4 miles 3yo handicap at 16.40.

Deauville today

Deauville stages its first turf meeting of the summer today, when the main event is the Group Three Prix de Ris-Orangis over 6 furlongs at 16.00 CET. The consistent Tiza (Alain de Royer-Dupré/ Christophe Soumillon) is the likely favourite here, but on the form shopwn in Germany there is not much between him and Mariol (Robert Collet/ Sebastian Maillot), who finished third at Hamburg last week, while Tiza was third at Baden-Baden in May to Abbadjinn, runner-up in Mariol´s Hamburg race. Only German-trained runner today is Miroslav Rulec´s Thunder Storm Cat (Jean-Michel Breux), who runs in the conditions race over 1900 metres for older horses at 16.35. There is also trotting this afternoon at Beaumont and this evening at Cabourg.

Chepstow, Chester and Newbury

Flat racing this eveing at three British tracks, Chepstow, Chester and Newbury, and the 6 furlongs handicap at 21.40 CET at the Welsh track looks the hottest race of the evening. 12 runners, all with chances, and top-weight Conquest (William Haggas/ Tom Queally), who has been running against better opposition is a very tentative choice to get the better of CD winner King´s Caprice (Jonathan Geake/ Richard Thomas) and Phantom Whisper (Rod and James Millmann). Vicky Hasigh is enjoying a purple patch right now and can score again with Paraguay (Eddie Creighton), winner of 4 of his last 5 races, in the mile handicap at 20.25 at Newbury. Two races over 5 furlongs look the most competitive heats at Chester; in the conditions race for 2yos at 20.10, consistent Doughnut (Richard Hannon/ Pat Cosgrave) could be the answer, while Hamis McGonagall (Tim Easterby/ David Allan) could win the handicap at 20.45 after finishing a good second in a better race at Newcastle last time.

Ireland this evening

Cork and Wexford are the two Irish tracks in action this eveniung, and boith of them have 3 flat races, 3 over hurdles and a bumper on the card. The better racing is at Cork, where the mile maiden at 19.15 CET looks a hot race. Jim Bolger´s Luminaire (Kevin Manning) is the possible favourite after losing by a short head at Tipperary last time, but Augustine Leahy´s Prince Igor (Chris Hayes), who made the running there at too fast a pace, could turn the form around, while James McAulay´s Time Travel (Colm O´Donoghue) and John Oxx´ Soul Murmur (Mick Kinane) both look dangerous, and Dermot Weld´s Designated Decoy (Pat Smullen) is a well-bred newcomer. Oxx should in any case be on the scoreboard at Wexford, where the Aga Khan´s Zamiyla (Fran Berry) should win the 1 mile 5 furlongs maiden at 20.05. She was beaten a short-head on her debut over 9 furlongs, but this longer trip could suit her better.

Ascot and York

Two other grade one tracks to stage racing this afternoon are Ascot and York, and the latter track has the better card, including a Group Three race for fillies over 6 furlongs at 15.45 CET. Alan Berry is enjoying his best ever season and can take it this with Look Busy (Paul Mulrennan), winner of her last 3 races (all over 5 furlongs) and one of 4 3yo´s in the field. The others Spinning Lucy (Barry Hills/ Chris Catlin), Eastern Romance (Kevin Ryan/ Fergal Lynch) and French-trained San Sicharia (Jean-Claude Rouget/ Ioritz Mendizibal) all have chances and it looks tough for the older fillies. The Cadbury Cup over 1 1/2 miles at 16.55 is another very tough handicap; Crete (William Haggas/ Alan Munro) won his only start this year inm great style but must now defy a 13 lbs hike in the weights. The two Godolphin runners Envisage and Night Hour could be the most dangerous opponents. At Ascot, trainer Andrew Balding, in great form at present, and jockey William Buick look ther team to follow and could even possibly land a four-timer with Kalahari Gold at 16.35, Dingaan at 17.10, Oceana Gold at 17.45 and Hatton Flight (going for his fourth win in a row) at 18.20.

Newmarket July meeting: day three

Lots of racing today, with a total of 8 tracks in action and some big and competitive fields.Pride of place goes to Newmarket anbd the final day of the July meeting, with the July Cup (Group One, 6 furlongs, 16.10 CET) as the main feature. This is undoubtedly one of the best sprint races of the season and many of the 15 runners ran in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot, which was won by the 3yo Kingsgate Native (John Best/ Seb Sanders).

This race, run on much slower ground and on a stiffer track, could well pan out differently and both Marchand d´Or (Freddie Head/ Davy Bonilla) and US Ranger (Aidan O´Brien/ Johnny Murtagh) can be given chances of reversing the form. The Group Two Superlative Stakes for 2yo´s over 7 furlongs at 15.00 has attracte 9 runners, 8 of them winners already, but 8 of them running for the first time in a pattern race. It isa difficult to make a selection, but Grand Ducal (O´Brien/ Murtagh), Firth of Forth (Tom Dascombe/ Robert Kingscote- yesterday´s winning team) and Prime Spirit (Brian Smart/ Tom Eaves) are three for thre short list. The big betting race of thre day is the Bunbury Cup at 15.35, one of the hottest 7 furlongs handicaps of the year. Mine (Jamie Bethell/ Frankie Dettori) is 10 years old but loves it here and has won this race 3 times already. This is his last chance as he is expected to be retired after roday´s race. Barry Hills has a good record here and ddles 3 runners, includiung last year´s winner Giganticus (Ted Durcan) and favourite Zaahid (Richard Hills), and with the Mark Johnston stable back in form Lovelace (Ryan Moore) must have a chance of repeating last Saturday´s Sandown succss.

Betting forecast:
1.Race: Mukhber - Flawed Genius - Stevie Thunder
2.Race: Grand Ducal - Prime Spirit - Firth Of Fifth
3.Race: Zaahid - King`S Apostle - Mastership
4.Race: Marchand D`Or - Kingsgate Native - War Artist
5.Race: Arctic Freedom - Zelloof - Sharpener
6.Race: Fareer - Measurement - Gal Aloud
7.Race: Cool Judgement - Come On Jonny - John Terry
