Epatante hard to beat in Mares Champion Hurdle

Punchestown, Saturday, 30 April: On the last day of the Punchestown Festival, great sport will be on offer once again.

In the Group 1 Mares Champion Hurdle (3rd race/16.50pm/125,000 Euro/4023m), Epatante (Aidan Coleman) will be looking to round off her successful season with a twelfth career win. The eight-year-old, beaten only by Honeysuckle at Cheltenham, will primarily be up against Telmesomethinggirl (Rachael Blackmore), who recently had to break away on the way in the Mares Hurdle and concede victory to Marie`s Rock (Nico de Boinville).

Another classic test will take place with the Four Year Old Hurdle (5th race/18.00 h/125,000 Euro/3218 m). A new duel is looming between Vauban (Paul Townend) and Fil Dor (Davy Russell). In the Triumph Hurdle (Group 1) at Cheltenham, the Mullins protégé won easily against Fil Dor, who easily kept fifth-placed Il Etait Temps (B. Cooper) at bay.

Does Native Trail`s winning streak last in the 2000 Guines?

Newmarket, Saturday 30 April: The first classic for horses of the Derby year takes place today on the second day of the Guineas Festival at Newmarket.

In the 2000 Guineas (5th race/16.40/1609m) the favourite is quickly found by Native Trail (William Buick). Still unbeaten in five starts, the Godolphin colt was also a force in his seasonal debut in the Craven Stakes (Group 3), distancing his nearest rival by three and a half lengths. The Charlie Appleby-trained Oasis-Dream son is supported by Corobeus (James Doyle), who has already celebrated two major victories here. The Royal Blues have to watch out for Perfect Power (Christophe Soumillon). Two of his five wins have come in the Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) and in his season debut in the Greenham Stakes (Group 3) over Lusail (Pat Dobbs). Aidan O`Brien is represented by two chances. Point Lonsdale (Frankie Dettori) pleased when second in the National Stakes (Group 1) behind the superior Native Trail. Luxembourg (Ryan Moore) advanced to a classic winner in the Futurity Trophy Stakes. Eydon (David Egan) and Checkandchallenge (Daniel Tudhope) are recommended by their fresh successes.

Mülheim: Delayed start to 2022 season

Mülheim, Saturday, 30 April 2022: Actually, there should have been one or the other race day in Mülheim during the winter, but now the 2022 season opener at Raffelberg will only start in full swing again on Saturday. Eight tests will be offered between 1:30 and 5 pm.

The highlight is an Equalisation II over 1,400 metres. Danelo (E. Pedroza) and Honore Daumier (L. Wolff) have already crossed blades. The former certainly deserves preference at the moment. Star Gypsy (S. Terachi) can also win once more. This also applies to the ex-series winner Olidaya (S. Vogt).

10,000 Euros stand over the four-horse bet of the 7th race (Equalisation IV, 2,950 m). Orbit King (S. Byrne) could make up for the last narrowly missed success.

Mega race day in Auteuil

Auteuil, Saturday 30 April: The race day of 24 April, which was cancelled due to a strike, will be made up for today as part of a double event.

The Prix Jean Stern (5th race/14.33 h/210,000 Euro/4400 m) appeals to four-year-old horses and runs over the Hunt course. After two successful performances this year by Latino des Isles (Pierre Dubourg) in the Prix Fleuret (Group 3) and the Prix Duc d`Anjou (Group 3), the way to victory leads through the gelding. Tonguetted (James Reveley) was in touch with him and is again in contention for a top placing. Sans Bruit (Kevin Nabet) won in strong fashion recently and, like La Manigance (Theo Chevillard) who has been showing up at Listed level, is a horse for better assignments.

Seven hurdle specialists will contest the Prix Leon Rambaud (5th race/17.45/155,000 Euro/4300 m). Despite the highest mark, L`Autonomie (Angelo Zuliani) should not be denied success. In her season debut in the Prix Hypothese (Group 3) she did not let any opponent get too close. Porto Pollo (Lucas Zuliani), Theleme (Pierre Dubourg), Colbert du Berlais (Ludovic Philipperon), Folsom Prison (Jeremy da Silva) and Hermes Baies (Bertrand Lestrade) had to acknowledge the superiority of the mare without envy. It is hard to believe in a defeat, as the seven-year-old had already been superior last year.

Diane test in the Prix Cleopatre

Saint-Cloud, Friday 29 April: Looking ahead to the Prix de Diane, there is a sighting test for three-year-old fillies today at Saint-Cloud with the Prix Cleopatre (3rd race/14.50pm/80,000 Euro/2100m).

Samahram (Christophe Soumillon) was a huge hit when she won the Maiden here in March. In contrast, Qarasha (Olivier Peslier) disappointed in the midfield, but corrected the result posthaste and won easily at the same place three weeks ago. Kawida (Stephane Pasquier) already triumphed at the top level in England and should also play a leading role on his seasonal debut. Hometruths (Cristian Demuro) did nothing wrong in a `Classe 1` third on 5 April and can be there as well as this year`s victors Place du Carrousel (Mickael Barzalona) and Regalis (Gerald Mosse).

Guineas Festival on the Rowley Mile

Newmarket, Friday 29 April: The three-day Guineas Festival begins today at the Rowley Mile in Newmarket.

The Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes (5th race/16.35pm/120,000 pounds/2414m) will be looking for Sir Ron Priestley`s successor. Godolphin is in with two horses with good chances. Yibir (William Buick) from Charlie Appleby`s quarters has already run at Meydan this year and narrowly missed out on victory in the Dubai Sheema Classic (Group 1). The three-time millionaire gets shooting help from West End Charmer (Ryan Moore), for whom Charlie and Mark Johnston are responsible. The Nathaniel son won a handicap here last year and most recently finished third at Listed level. Outbox (Hollie Doyle) has also been out in the desert this year. He won a Group 1 race over grass in Doha against Mutabahi and Fox Tal, both of whom are well-known in this country. Living Legend (Joe Fanning) deserves attention as a fresh double winner. Raymond Tusk (Martin Harley) is another horse in form with a chance of placing, while the ageing Red Verdon (Marco Ghiani) is only one of the outsiders despite his undisputed class.

Mauquenchy instead of Vincennes

Mauquenchy, Friday 29 April: To avoid a strike by the French trade union, today`s Paris-Vincennes event has been unceremoniously moved to Mauquenchy, where two Group 2 tests will take centre stage.

The first main race is aimed at five-year-old saddle trotters in the Prix Louis Forci (4th race/20.50pm/120,000 euros/2850m). Hirondelle du Rib (Jean Dersoir) stands out by class. She last completed a build-up race in front of the sulky, before that she was third in the Prix des Centaures (Group 1) with allowance. In the Prix Paul Bastard (Group 2) she defeated no less than six of her competitors today. Happy Star Dry (Alexis Collette) and Happy and Lucky (Adrien Lamy) were the best behind the Hallais mare, while Herbue des Valois (Camille Levesque), Hytte du Terroir (Alexandre Abrivard) and Harley Charentaise (Pierre-Yves Verva) already had a bigger gap.

The Prix Rene Palyar (6th race/21.44 pm/120,000 Euro/2225 m), reserved for four-year-olds, will also be decided under saddle. In terms of prize money, a three-way battle is emerging between Ici C`Est Paris (David Thomain), Ideale du Chêne (Paul Philippe Ploquin) and Inoui Danica (Francois Lagadeuc). The trio met in the Prix de Pardieu (Group 2), among others. While the former failed by a canter, Ideale du Chêne, as before in the Prix de Vincennes (Group 1), won superiorly ahead of Inoui Danica, who had nothing to fear for third place. In the most recent appearance in the Prix Louis Le Bourg (Group 2), the Le Mer protégé had to give in to the Allaire stallion in the fight for silver.

Punchestown Stayers Hurdle with last year`s winner

unchestown, Thursday, April 28: On the third day of the Punchestown Festival, the Stayers Hurdle (4th race/6.25pm/275,000 euros/4730m) is in focus today.

Trained by Willie Mullins, Klassical Dream (Paul Townend) already made a splash last year. He won the Group 1 fixture by nine lengths, then paused until his next score in the Christmas Hurdle (Group 1) at Leopardstown. Currently running in the Cheltenham Stayers Hurdle (Group 1), the Dream Well son came in fifth behind Paisley Park (Aidan Coleman). Emma Lavelle`s charge won the prep in the Cleeve Hurdle (Group 2) before that and the ten-year-old came in third in the Long Walk Hurdle (Group 1). Sire du Berlais (Mark Walsh) enters as the current winner of the Liverpool Hurdle (Group 1). The Meade charge came up empty in a handicap at Cheltenham. Thedevilscoachman (Sean Flanagan) has only run in Ireland so far. His most recent triumph in the Boyne Hurdle (Group 2) narrowly over Ashadale Bob (Robbie Power) speaks for him. Concertista (Daryl Jacob) ran in only one Group 2 Mares Chase this year and did decently well to finish fifth. Gentlemansgame (Rachael Blackmore) and Vanillier (Keith Donoghue) are in-form contenders with outside chances.

Grand National du Trot with Cleangame

Chateaubriant, Wednesday 27 April: The fourth leg of the Grand National du Trot (1st race/13.50/90,000 euros/2975m) stops at Chateaubriant today. 16 horses are distributed in three ribbon divisions.

Chalimar de Guez (Romain Congard), Etoile de Bruyere (Charles Dreux) and Cleangame (Jean-Michel Bazire) have the furthest to go. The latter cannot avoid being the favourite, even if 50 metres allowance is a tough one. In his most recent appearance, he came off his legs in the Prix Jean Riaud (Group 3) at the start of the home straight in the battle for the win. A tape more favourable is Epsom d`Herfraie (Eric Raffin) in the race. On 6 April, he finished a very good third in Angers at Group 3 level despite a handicap. Girolamo (Antoine Lhérété) came off his feet in that match, but then won the `GNT` stage in Reims against, among others, Eire d`Helios (François Lagadeuc), Flower By Magalou (Antoine Wiels) and Favori de l`Iton (Tristan de Genouillac), who were in the picture from fifth to seventh. Freyja du Pont (Nicolas Bazire) showed once again that she is out of form and is waiting for better days. Hanna des Molles (Alexandre Abrivard) delivers her best performance within the year group. Fawley Buissonay (Jean-Philippe Monclin) currently surprised behind the favourite and is due to win.

Royal Ascot Trials Day

Ascot, Wednesday, 27 April: The new season will be ushered in today at the Royal Ascot track with two Group 3 trials.

The first highlight is the Sagaro Stakes (4th race/16.35 h/80,000 pounds/3209 m). Stradivarius could be succeeded by Princess Zoe (J. Sheridan). On her last appearance on this track in the Gold Cup (Group 1) she finished an excellent second. This year, the six-year-old was hit too hard in Riyadh. Tashkhan (Ben Robinson) will be making his first appearance after taking honours in the Long Distance Cup (Group 2) behind Trueshan and ahead of Stradivarius. Wordsworth (Ryan Moore) finished third in the Irish Derby, then showed his preference for the long way in the Grand Prix de Paris (Group 1) when second. Enemy (William Buick) prepared victoriously for today`s assignment at Musselburgh. Nayef Road (Joe Fanning) was in the picture behind Stradivarius last year.

The Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (5th race/5.10pm/£80,000/1200m) is aimed at the Derby age group. Go Bears Go (Rossa Ryan) finished his maiden season second in the Breeders` Cup Sprint (Group 2). His most valuable win came in the Railway Stakes (Group 2) against Castle Star, who later finished second in the Middle Park Stakes. Hierarchy (Cieren Fallon) fought for the best places in the Breeders` Cup but ended up only sixth. He meets Wings Of War (Adam Kirby), with whom the three-year-old battled to victory in the Mill Reef Stakes (Group 2). Ehraz (Jim Crowley) and Space Cowboy (Ryan Moore) already showed some signs.

Four days of festival in Punchestown

Punchestown, Tuesday, 26 April: The Great Comeback Festival will take place on the obstacle course in Punchestown over four days.

Today`s Champion Chase Day will focus on the classic of the same name (4th race/18.25 h/270,000 Euro/3218 m). In the five-strong field, Energumene (Paul Townend) and Chacun Pour Soi (P. Mullins) clearly stand out. The latter won the match twelve months ago, then the Mullins protégé moved to the break. In the new season he managed a win in the Dublin Chase (Group 1) against Captain Guiness (Davy Russell), in the latest appearance in the Queen Mother Champion Chase (Group 1) he did not get over the jumps without an accident. The win went to training companion Energumene, who was beaten a length at the previous start in the Clarence House Chase (Group 1). Envoi Allen (Rachael Blackmore) drew off brilliantly at Cheltenham behind the eight-time winner in third. Andy Durfresne (Mark Walsh) finished in an excellent honours position in a Handicap Chase) on the same day.

Strong mares in the Prix Hopper

Compiegne, Tuesday, 26 April: Two Listed races frame the Group 3 Prix Hopper in Compiegne today (4th race/15.35 h/135,000 Euro/3900 m). The hunter test is aimed at four-year-old horses.

Two mares are in the role of favourites. La Boetie (Kevin Nabet) and Ma Beaute (Ludovic Philipperon) won easily and superiorly respectively here in the preparation and are two pounds more favourable in the race than the remaining five geldings. Showly (Tristan Lemagnen) and Gibralfaro (Theo Chevillard) performed well in their last starts up front and should be noted, as should Bahiosun (Anthony Renard), who surprised here in October. Drop The Pilot (Clement Lefebvre) and Hunion Delablairie (Johnny Charron), who have run over hurdles so far, deserve a mention.

Majestic Colt under new direction at Naas

Naas, Monday, April 25: Eight races are on the program today in Naas, Ireland. At the center of the action is the Woodlands Stakes (4th race/19.15pm/40,000 euros/1000m), a Listed test for three-year-olds and older horses.

The Jack Davison-trained Mooneista (Oisin Orr) won the fixture last year against Harry`s Bar, who ran at Meydan this year, and currently the four-year-old finished in excellent honors in the Cork Stakes (List race). Her most valuable victory came in last year`s Group 2 Sapphire Stakes. At the Curragh, Mooneista defeated Gustavus Weston (Gary Carroll), who followed a length and a half behind, and Romantic Proposal (Chris Hayes), who finished third. The latter later won the classic Flying Five Stakes against, among others, Gustavus Weston, who landed a bigpoint in the Phoenix Sprint Stakes (Group 3). Formerly trained by Andreas Wöhler, Majestic Colt (Joe Doyle) was sold at Tattersalls Auction and now competes for new colors. The Group and Listed winner contested his last race in the Golden Whip (Group 3) and narrowly missed winning. Geocentric (Colin Keane) is the youngest competitor in the field and should play a supporting role. The Kodiac daughter has never finished worse than third in her five-start career. Logo Hunter (Seamie Heffernan) last saw Mooniesta only from behind, this time the four-year-old is expected to run better.

Latino des Isles and L`Autonomie the stars in Auteuil

Auteuil, Sunday, 24 April: Two races in the Group 2 category mark the highlights in Auteuil today.
The Prix Jean Stern (5th race/16.25 h/210,000 Euro/4400 m) appeals to four-year-old horses and runs over the Hunt course. After two successful performances this year by Latino des Isles (Tristan Lemagnen) in the Prix Fleuret (Group 3) and the Prix Duc d`Anjou (Group 3), the way to victory leads through the gelding. Tonguetted (James Reveley) was in touch with him and is again in contention for a top placing. Sans Bruit (Kevin Nabet) won in strong fashion recently and, like La Manigance (Theo Chevillard) who has been showing up at Listed level, is a horse for better assignments.

Seven hurdle specialists will contest the Prix Leon Rambaud (7th race/17.35/155,000 Euro/4300 m). Despite the highest mark, L`Autonomie (Angelo Zuliani) should not be denied success. In her season debut in the Prix Hypothese (Group 3) she did not let any opponent get too close. Porto Pollo (Lucas Zuliani), Theleme (Tristan Lemagnen), Colbert du Berlais (Ludovic Philipperon), Folsom Prison (Jeremy da Silva) and Hermes Baies (Bertrand Lestrade) had to acknowledge the superiority of the mare without envy. The seven-year-old has to watch out for Galop Marin (Felix de Giles), who gave her a severe defeat in the Grand Prix d`Automne (Group 1).

Dr. Busch Memorial attracts the hopefuls to Krefeld

Krefeld, Sunday, 24 April: The Derby in Hamburg is just over two months away, and the first classic of the stallions for the Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen is not far away either. These major events are already casting their shadows on Sunday, when an important preliminary test is scheduled in Krefeld with the Grand Jubilee Prize ("125 Years of Wohnstätte Krefeld" - Dr. Busch Memorial (Group III, 55,000 Euros, 1,700 m).

The successor to Best of Lips is being sought. In the field of ten, Georgios (B. Murzabayev) deserves a hint, who last caught Ariolo (M. Pecheur) in Düsseldorf. Both horses belong on the shortlist. Trainer Markus Klug can draw on a wide range of horses, including Schwarzer Peter (A. Helfenbein), the runner-up in the Prize of the Winter Favourites, as well as the Junior Prize winner Mylady (A. Starke) and Ariolo (M. Pecheur). The mare in particular should enjoy a lot of confidence. Rocchigiani (S. Vogt) already won a group race in 2021.

The group race is embedded in a card of seven races between 11:20 am and 2:30 pm. The first five races are also part of the PMU programme in France.

The four-race bet with a guaranteed payout of 10,000 Euros will be played out in the 6th race (Equalisation III, 1,300 m). The impressive track winner Bastiano (J. Bojko) should lead the way to success.

Defending champion Vivid Wise As against Etonnant

Enghien, Saturday 23 April: The twelve-horse Prix de l`Atlantique (7th race/5.37pm/200,000 euros/2150m) is the standout event at Enghien today. Five participants were last seen in the Grand Critérium de Vitesse de la Côte d`Azur (Group 1).

Etonnant (Anthony Barrier) recalled his best form and defeated Vivid Wise As (Matthieu Abrivard), winner of the Prix de France (Group 1), after a tough fight. Alcoy (Christophe Martens) and Delia du Pommereux (David Thomain) collected better premiums not far behind and Vitruvio (Alexandre Abrivard) finished in midfield. Last year, Vivid Wise As won in the trainer`s hand against the Westerink protégé, who in turn had nothing to fear from Delia du Pommereux taking the honours. The recent duel could be disturbed by Callmethebreeze (Andrea Guzzinati) and Feydeau Seven (Nicolas Bazire), who were both in the picture behind the winner in the Prix du Plateau de Gravelle (Group 3).

Jump Final in Sandown

Sandown, Saturday 23 April: The Jump Final at Sandown offers great steeplechase racing once again today. The Celebration Chase (3rd race/16.00/160,000 pounds/3126m) stands out as a Group 1 race over the chase jumps.

Last year`s winner Greaneteen (Harry Cobden) later won the Tingle Creek Chase (Group 1) at the same venue, but did not finish beyond last in the Dublin Chase (Group 1) on his last appearance after unfortunate running. Nuba Negra (Harry Skelton) was seen here behind Greaneteen in December, but in the Queen Mother Champion Chase (Group 1) a year ago the Skelton protégé had the better of the defending champion in the battle for second. Sceau Royal (Daryl Jacob) recently underlined his good form by finishing third in the Marsh Chase (Group 1). Rouge Vif (Lorcan Williams) repeatedly flushed money into the stable coffers but had nothing to do with the closer decision. Sky Pirate (Jonjo O`Neill jr.) can only benefit from the failure of the Mean.

Three-year-olds rehearse in Paris

Paris-Vincennes, Friday, 22 April: The youngest active crop will contest two Group 3 races separated by sex in front of the sulky at Vincennes today.

In the Prix Atlas (6th race/21.44pm/70.000 Euro/2100m), the three-year-old stallions are at the expiry. Jakartas des Pres (Franck Nivard) did nothing wrong in the Prix Penthesilea (Group 3) three weeks ago when third ahead of Just For Lova (Antoine Lherete), Jaguar Wit (Tony Le Beller) and Jasmin Merite (Julien Raffestin) and could win the match. His priority is to beat Jasmin du Vallon (Francois Lagadeuc), who has won two times in a row. The difficult but strong-running Jetpack (Eric Raffin) is also one of his fiercest rivals.

In the mares` Prix Aschera (7th race/22.11pm/70,000 Euro/2100m), the way to victory leads through the enormously strong-running Jamaica Turbo (Francois Lagadeuc), but the gallop-prone winner of the Prix Une de Mai (Group 2) will be tested by Joke (Gabriele Gelormini), who surprisingly finished third in the Critérium des Jeunes (Group 1). Jazzie Belle (Eric Raffin) and Junon (David Thomain), prepared by William Bigeon, will not make it easy for the former.

Classic Trial Day and Sandown Mile

Sandown, Friday 22 April: The Racecourse at Sandown Park will host two days of top-class steeplechase and flat racing.

Today the focus is on the Derby age group, among others. In the Classic Trial (5th race/16.35 h/80,000 pounds/2000 m) the successor to the German-bred Alenquer will be sought. The horses of Charlie Appleby and Godolphin, who are operating with great success on all fronts, are represented with two chances. Goldspur (William Buick), who was successful at Group 3 level last year, is expected to win. Franz Strauss (James Doyle) did nothing wrong in his only appearance to date on the all-weather track at Newcastle, but must now show his colours. The same goes for River Thames (Ryan Moore) and Cash (Jamei Spencer), who cut a fine figure in their maiden victories. Frantastic (Frankie Dettori) and Westover (Rob Hornby) are other proven winners with the best chances.

The older horses contest the Sandown Mile (4th race/16.00/115,000 pounds/1609m). Classic winner Alcohol Free (Rob Hornby) is the benchmark, but on her seasonal debut the four-year-old will be up against Mutasaabeq (Jim Crowley), who gave a strong performance at Thirsk just under a fortnight ago. Last year`s two-time winner Sunray Major (Frankie Dettori) is also expected to be well in front.

Parol faces difficult course

Longchamp, Thursday, 21 April: The Prix Jacques Laffitte (7th race/17.20 h/52,000 Euro/1800 m) promises an exciting outcome today in Longchamp. The Listed race is aimed at four- and five-year-old stallions/geldings.

German hopes rest on Parol (Clement Lecoeuvre), trained by Bohumil Nedorostek. In Dortmund, the five-year-old became a serial winner this year, then he won in Chantilly and most recently, the Pastorius son only just missed the next score in Saint-Cloud. Jean-Claude Rouget saddled two promising horses, Wally (Cristian Demuro) and Makaloun (Christophe Soumillon). The latter has not competed since his ninth place in the French Derby, his training companion did not finish higher than second last in the Prix Edmond Blanc (Group 3). In Crowd (Olivier Peslier) finally scored another victory after three List honours in a row. On the track in Compiegne, the Head protégé won as expected, as did the Fabre five-year-old Salesman (Maxime Guyon) in a handicap on the same day. Bellharbour Music (Ioritz Mendizabal), who has run twice on the List circuit this year, is expected to be in the lead, judging by his victory in the Prix Daphnis (Group 3), ahead of Djo Francais (Mickael Barzalona).

Best Flying in the Prix Sigy

Chantilly, Wednesday, 20 April: Today`s eight-race event in Chantilly starts right away with the main event. In the Prix Sigy (1st race/16.27 h/80.000 Euro/1100 m), which belongs to Group 3, four stallions will meet seven mares.

Andreas Suborics saddled Best Flying (Christophe Soumillon), who had already run strongly here, for the first time this year. In the Prix Eclipse (Group 3) the three-year-old lost after a photo finish, later she finished fourth in the Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte. Trainer Henri-Alex Pantall saddled two horses with good chances, who already caused a stir this year. Feel Your Power (Mickael Barzalona) won the Prix Ronde de Nuit here in a Listed race against, among others, Josejosephine (Yoann Rousset), who finished in midfield, and Le Cadeau (Olivier Peslier) had no problems 16 days ago at the same place in a Classe 1 with Miramar (Ronan Thomas), who finished third in the List behind Feel Your Power and ahead of Montussan (Tony Piccone) in October. Caturra (Adam Kirby), Attagirl (Adrie de Vries) and Guilded (Cristian Demuro) are interesting guests from England. The protégé of Clive Cox won the Flying Childers Stakes (Group 2) last year, later he just missed a top placing in the Middle Park Stakes (Group 1). Attagirl defeated Caturra in York, last time he was without possibilities against Caturra. Guilded already impressed in France.

Georgica Gede the horse to beat

Paris-Vincennes, Tuesday 19 April: Older saddle trotters who have not won €575,000 will be the target of today`s Group 3 Prix Cornelia (3rd race/5.37pm/€90,000/2850m) in Paris-Vincennes.

The `poorest` participant in the eight-strong field is Georgica Gede (Mathieu Mottier), trained by Alexandre Pillon. Judging by her last place of honour in the Prix des Centaures (Group 1), the six-year-old has first chances. Dimo d`Occagnes (Paul Philippe Ploquin), whose most recent triumph in the Prix Vivier de Montfort (Course A) over Edition Gema (Gaelle Godard) was the most valuable in his career so far, is hardly rated worse. Before that, he lost to Egao Jenilou (Eric Raffin) in the Prix de Lisieux (Course B), who lost the battle for second place to Diamant de Larre (Charlene Callico) at Group 3 level in November. Carioca de Lou (Alexandre Abrivard) made four unsuccessful appearances in front of the sulky this year. About ten months ago, he took a good place of honour in this métier.

Visual inspection in Epsom

Epsom, Tuesday 19 April: The Derby track at Epsom hosts six exciting races today around the Blue Riband Trial (2nd race/15.20pm/60,000 pounds/2030m).

The Listed race for three-year-olds sees Charlie Appleby`s stable`s Nahanni (William Buick), winner twice in three appearances this year, in the role of favourite. Jockey Frankie Dettori, who won the fixture four times in a row from 2015 to 2018, hopes to add another entry to the winners` list through the impressively successful Mighty Ulysses from the John and Thady Gosden quarters at York. The Aidan O`Brien-trained United Nations (Ryan Moore) should have learned his lesson after his disappointing showing in the Autumn Stakes (Group 3) and can win, as can this year`s dual-purpose Grand Alliance (James Doyle) and Zain Sarinda (Jack Mitchell).

Cologne kick-off with Carl Jaspers Prize

Cologne, Monday, 18 April: What a great start to the new racing year on Easter Monday in Cologne. With the Carl Jaspers Prize (Group II, 70,000 Euros, 2,400 m) on the 1.FC Köln race day, the fans in the cathedral city will be offered sport of the very best.

Last year`s Derby runner-up Alter Adler (A. Pietsch) will meet, among others, the Group winner Sea of Sands (B. Murzabayev), the French Road To Arc (A. Orani) and Only the Brave (A. Sanna) or the Grand Prix gallop runner-up Alaskasonne (A. Starke), but a lot seems possible here. 10,000 euros is the premium trifecta bet.

15,000 Euros are to be won in the four-way bet of the 4th race (Equalisation III, 1,850 m). 10,000 Euros are to be won in the 7th race (Equalisation IV, 1,300 m). A total of eight races will be held between 2:15 pm and 5:55 pm.

Diana in the Prix Balbo over three kilometres

Saint-Cloud, Monday 18 April: An exciting nine-race event will be staged at Saint-Cloud today. One of the better races is the Prix Balbo (6th race/17.00 hrs/28,000 Euro/3100 m) leading over the long distance, in which Andre Fabre`s Botanik has already been determined as a non-runner.

In the five-strong field, Andreas Suborics will saddle the only mare with Diana (Mickaelle Michel). The four-year-old Amaron daughter, who runs for the Alster Racing II stable, won here last June and at her last start five months ago in Angers she finished in a not quite expected place of honour in the `Classe 2` category. Although Diana has a very good form record, the four remaining contenders are rated higher by the trade press. Mister Nino (Anthony Crastus) only recently won a suitable task safely on today`s course. Whispering Ocean (Maxime Guyon) continued his series of top placings in Fontainebleau. Behind him, Blue Swan (Gregory Benoist) came away empty-handed. The latter finished a surprising third in the Prix Denisy (list race) here. Max la Fripouille (Marc Nobili) received good reviews for his running in the Prix du Cadran (Group 1) as seventh of 13.

Three-year-olds in Longchamp on the test bench

Longchamp, Sunday, 17 April: Derby is the focus of today`s eight-race event in Paris-Longchamp.

The first Group 3 race is aimed at the mares. In the Prix de la Grotte (4th race/15.50/80,000 Euro/1600 m), Raclette (Olivier Peslier), unbeaten by Andre Fabre, is seen as the winner, but whether it will be enough against the three-time winner Mangoustine (Gerald Mosse) and Kosacea (Mickael Barzalona) remains to be seen. The latter two have already won at today`s level. Times Square (Maxime Guyon) caused a sensation here in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Group 1). As the longest outsider, she took the place of honour far ahead of Acer Alley (Christophe Soumillon), who before that pinned the Prix la Rochette (Group 2) to her banner.

The stallions are under order in the Prix de Fontainebleau (5th race/16.25 h/80,000 Euro/1600 m). Ancient Rome (Olivier Peslier) placed in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Group 1) and the Critérium International (Group 1) after his triumph in the Prix des Chênes (Group 3). Andre Fabre`s three-year-old has the class to beat them all, but the competition is lurking. Jean-Claude Rouget is bringing out the big guns. Welwal (Cristian Demuro), Hauran (Coralie Pacaut) and the list winner Vadeni (Christophe Soumillon) will not make it easy for the Fabre protégé. Making Moovies (Alexandre Gavilan) announced himself with a convincing success in Toulouse and should be just as sharp a blade as Mathletic (Mickael Barzalona), who still looked pale on his seasonal debut in the Prix Omnium II (Listed race) and for whom two victories from last year speak.

The Prix Noailles (6th race/17.00 h/80,000 Euro/2100 m) leads over the middle distance. Once again, the way to victory leads through Andre Fabre. He will saddle Junko (Maxime Guyon), who has been unbeaten twice on sand this year. He will be tested by Maximus (Olivier Peslier) and Cuncerto (Mickael Barzalona), who have also performed well this year. Garachico (Gerald Mosse) has already shown decent performances at the upper level and could thwart the reckoning of the Means. Master Gatsby (Ioritz Mendizabal) and Le Sicilien (Christophe Soumillon) are not without chances judging by their winning performances.

Three Hoppegarten highlights on Easter Sunday

Hoppegarten, Sunday, 17 April: It will be a big year in Berlin-Hoppegarten. But in 2022, not only the highlights of the 200-year celebration of German gallop racing are planned here, but also ten interesting racing days. This already starts on Easter Sunday with ten tests between 11:20 am and 4:20 pm, of which races 1 to 5 are also part of the PMU programme in France.

There will be three Listed Power races for 22,500 Euros each. In the Prize of Dahlwitz (2,000 m), the 2021 Union hero Best of Lips (M. Seidl) will make his highly anticipated comeback. As is well known, he had to forgo the Derby, among others, for which he was considered the favourite. Mansour (S. Vogt) impressed in the Grand Prix canter, where he was to leave Virginia Storm (A. Sanna) behind him.

The Altano race (2,800 m) is a dress rehearsal for the Oleander race at the same venue. In an international field, Diamantis (M. Seidl) has a lot going for him after his recent list placing. In the premium triple bet, 11,111 Euros will be paid out.

Penja (B. Ganbat) has a lot of class in the 1,600-metre Prize of the Röttgen Stud. But the many guests from different countries do not make the match easy.

The four-horse bet is offered twice - with a guaranteed payout of 22,222 Euros in the 5th race (Equalisation III, 2,200 metres). 11,111 Euros are offered in the 10th race (Equalisation IV, 2,000 m).

4 x Group 2 in Vincennes

Paris-Vincennes, Saturday, 16 April: Two yearlings will contest a total of four Group 2 races at Vincennes today, separated by sex and each worth 120,000 euros.

The Prix Hermine (2nd race/14.33 h/2700 m) is aimed at three-year-old fillies and will be decided under saddle. The clear favourite in the race is Junon du Leard (Paul Philippe Ploquin), who is used to winning. Most recently, she won the Prix Ali Hawas (Group 2) in superior fashion against Jipsy du Noyer (Alexandre Abrivard), Joyeuse (Mathieu Mottier) and Java de Fael (David Thomain), who were fighting for places and are among the challengers again this time.

Eleven three-year-old saddle trotters are under order in the Prix Gai Brillant (8th race/18.10pm/2700m). Jaspers Turgot (David Thomain) currently held his own, winning the Prix Edouard Marcillac (Group 3) here against Jelyson (Yoann Lebourgeois) and Jasper des Pres (Guillaume Martin) and the Prix Felicien Gauvreau (Group 2) ahead of Jackpot du Choquel (Paul Philippe Ploquin) and Jubile Prior (Aurelien Desmarres). Jolly Roger (Adrien Lamy) failed to gallop in both tests, but showed great running potential in two wins during the meeting.

The five-year-old mares will face each other in front of the sulky in the Prix Henri Levesque (3rd race/15.15/2700m). Huwaga (Jean-Michel Bazire) will be presented today by the trainer himself and is expected to be far in front despite a mixed form. Hanna des Molles (Alexandre Abrivard) stayed in the stable for most of the winter. The mare, who won the Prix Guy Le Gonidec (Group 2), completed a preparatory race on 26 March and will now compete in a promoted race. Heliade du Goutier (Gabriele Gelormini) last ran in December, she is hard to put down after class but lacks condition. Happy Valley (Jean-Philippe Dubois), on the other hand, is in top form and can beat them all.

There is less of a crowd for the stallions in the Prix Robert Auvray (6th race/17.00/2700 m). Hooker Berry (Jean-Michel Bazire) recently knew how to please in the Prix de Nevers (Group 3) even in defeat. In the final sprint he came too late for the victory, at the finish he was only narrowly beaten. On the day of the Prix de Amérique (Group 1) he also lost to Havanaise, but had nothing to fear against the volatile Helgafell (Franck Nivard), who disappointed again afterwards, for second place.

Now Bremen is taking off again!

Bremen, Saturday, 16 April: The turf fans in Bremen can rejoice. After a break of many years and a successful race day in 2021, three dates are to be held in the Vahr in 2022, starting on Easter Saturday with eight competitions between 2:30 pm and 6:05 pm.

The top highlight is an Equalisation II leading over the mile with many interesting candidates. This certainly includes Divio (A. Starke), who seems to be far from being fully recognised. Form and condition speak for Koffi Star (A. Sanna), who could already substantiate his new brand. But the rest of the field is teeming with promising horses.

10,000 Euros are on the line for the four-horse bet of the 6th race (Equalisation IV, 1,600 m). Camiro (M. Pecheur) and Mayne (A. v. d. Recke) are two of our recommendations.

Winnetou Diamant in the Prix Ariel

Paris-Vincennes, Friday, 15 April: Tonight`s event on the Plateau de Gravelle begins with the Prix Ariel (1st race/18.23/59,000 Euro/2850 m). Five-year-old European horses are addressed in this `Course B`.

Winnetou Diamant (Robin Bakker), who has been successful in Germany several times, will make his comeback. Strong competition awaits the Hagoort protégé. Hobbes (Alexandre Abrivard) and Blue Eyes Bar (Matthieu Abrivard) won in March and can hardly be left out. Kimberly`s Wish (Eric Raffin) made her mark here in February and now ventures into a better class. Brillantissime (Franck Ouvrie) fluffed her French debut but still appears dangerous judging by his Italian performances. First Blood (Jean-Michel Bazire) makes his first start with the French champion. A good performance is expected.

All-Weather Finals Day in Newcastle

Newcastle, Friday 15 April: The All-Weather Championships finals will be held today at Newcastle`s sand track. Race prizes of one million pounds across seven races promise great sport. Many track specialists are on show, such as My Oberon (Tom Marquand), running in the All-Weather Mile Championships (2nd race/15.00pm/150,000 pounds/1609m), who was sixth in the Dubai Turf last time.

In the Sprint (3rd race/15.35/150,000 pounds/1200m), Eitilaab (David Egan) is looking to strike again after his strong win at Kempton, but the currently successful Spycatcher (Clifford Lee) and Volatile Analyst (Callum Rodriguez) are also conceivably well ahead.

In the 3 Year Old All-Weather Championships (4th race/16.10pm/150,000 pounds/1200m), El Caballo (Clifford Lee) and Tiber Flow (Tom Marquand), double winners this year, will meet. Space Cowboy (Hollie Doyle), who was showing here before his break, will not give the first two anything.

The fillies are under order in the All-Weather Fillies and Mares (5th race/16.45pm/150,000 pounds/1400m). Fauvette (David Probert), Arousing (Tom Marquand) and Highfield Princess (Jason Hart) have already battled to victory at Chelmsford. Internationalangel (Hollie Doyle) impressed here in February but finished well behind Highfield Princess recently.

In addition, the All-Weather Marathon and the Middle Distance Championships are still to be decided.

Open Grand National du Trot in Reims

Reims, Wednesday 13 April: The Champagne City in Reims hosts the third leg of the Grand National du Trot today (1st race/13.50pm/90,000 euros/2550m). French Man (Julien Dubois) finds everything suitable from the basic mark and could decide the Group 3 match in his favour.

Fragonard Delo (Franck Nivard) and Flower By Magalou (Yoann Lebourgeois), who finished first in the Prix Electra (Course C) at the Vincennes Winter Meeting, will also have a say in the winner. Edy du Pommereux (Mathieu Mottier) has had a successful season so far. In Lisieux, the gelding continued his series of good performances and took second place ahead of Girolamo (Antoine Lherete), who again clearly gave Favori de l`Iton the slip. Day de Bellouet (Paul-Philippe Ploquin) was better than Fragonard Delo in the latest stage in Salon-de-Provence. Felix du Bourg (Gabriele Gelormini) is steadily collecting place money, a victory should be possible soon. For Freyja du Pont (Nicolas Bazire), who comes from better tasks, and Eire d`Helios (Francois Lagadeuc), who ran best in the `GNT` of Amiens, are not without a chance despite allowance.

Native Trail`s season debut in the Craven Stakes

Newmarket, Wednesday 13 April: Two Group 3 races will be in the spotlight on the second day of the Craven Meeting at Newmarket.

The Abernant Stakes (4th race/16.00/£80,000/1210m) is reserved for three-year-olds and older horses. Ebro River (Jamie Spencer) crowned his last season with victory in the Phoenix Stakes (Group 1) and the season debutant is immediately among the closest favourites. The three-year older Garrus (Ryan Moore) will certainly not give him anything, especially as he has already gained fitness at List level in Doncaster. Jumby (William Buick) is a track specialist and just as indispensable as Bellosa (Adam Kirby), who has won here twice.

The three-year-olds will complete a Derby test in the Craven Stakes (5th race/16.35pm/£80,000/1610m). Eyes will be on the unbeaten Native Trail (William Buick), trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin. The two-time Group 1 winner clearly stands out, partly because his six rivals have not yet raced on an upmarket circuit. Star Of India (Ryan Moore), Al Mubhir (Tom Marquand) and Claymore (Adam Kirby) won on career debut and are among the Appleby protégé`s main opponents.

Newmarket kicks off with Craven meeting

Newmarket, Tuesday, April 12: The Rowley Mile in Newmarket kicks off the new season today. The three-day Craven Meeting has plenty of top-class races in store. First main event is the Earl Of Sefton Stakes (4th race/16.00/80,000 pounds/1810m). Master Of The Seas (William Buick), winner here in last year`s Craven Stakes (Group 3), finds himself with a solvable task at the first attempt. The four-year-old, who only finished midfield in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1) last time, will be challenged by Megallan (Frankie Dettori). He played no part in the French Derby but won the Sovereign Stakes (Group 3) at Salisbury. Bell Rock (David Probert) already showed good performances on this course and will not give anything to the favorite duo.

The three-year-old fillies will contest the Nell Gwyn Stakes (5th race/16.35pm/80,000 pounds/1410m). The George Boughey-trained Cachet (William Buick) won her first lifetime start on this course and followed up with other good finishes. In her last appearance in the Breeders` Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Group 1) in the USA, she finished a respectable fourth ahead of Hello You (Rossa Ryan). The Loughnane mare defeated Cachet by a length and a half in the Rockfel Stakes (Group 2). Perfect News (Tom Marquand) pleased in the Oh So Sharp Stakes (Group 3) when third to Rishes Bar (Daniel Tudhope); before that, she won a handicap here after struggling. Ribbon Rose (Neil Callan) backed up for today`s assignment with a win on the all-weather track at Kempton.

Will Atreus stay on track for success?

Nancy, Monday, April 11: There are plenty of German chances in today`s eight-race event in Nancy. In the Prix des Conseillers de la Filière Equine du Grand-Est (2nd race/16:50/18,000 euros/2500 m), Uwe Schwinn will saddle Atreus (Stefanie Koyuncu), who recently won in Strasbourg. The four-year-old will meet Doralice (Axelle Nicco), who finished a good fourth behind the gelding. Already here in November, the mare lost out to the Schwinn protégé in the battle for fifth place. In addition to the mare, Karoly Kerekes also has Sharar (Bayarsaikhan Ganbat) on the schedule, for whom only minor placings speak. Regine Weißmeier is represented by Damavand (Esther Ruth Weißmeier), who won in Dortmund this year, Ertürk Kurdu saddles Interstella (Leon Wolff), who is constantly running in the honored ranks, and Iffezheim trainer Conny Whitfield brings Analeon (Tony Piccone), who is in strong form, to the start. Art of Fusion (Sebastien Maillot) and My Buddy (Benjamin Marie) won their most recent outings and are again conceivable in the front end.

The 2022 Group Kick-off: Spring Mile in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf, 10 April - The stars of racing are returning to the German racecourses - on Sunday, it all kicks off with the first Group Race 2022 in Düsseldorf. The Spring Mile (Group III, 55,000 Euros, 1,600 m) attracts real aces.

Last year`s winner Zavaro (M. Cadeddu) will have to work hard to defend his title, as he will face strong competition, such as Mythico (R. Piechulek), who won the Mehl-Mülhens race in 2021. In 2020, the later Galopper of the Year Rubaiyat (A. Sanna) was second in the Cologne classic. Certainly not to be left out is the Frenchman Ocean (B. Murzabayev).

In total, the programme includes ten races between 11:20 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., including of course a betting chance with a 10,000 euro guaranteed payout in the four-horse bet of the 10th race (Equalisation IV, 1,700 m). Here, New Topmodel (S. Biessey) and Dutch Devil (B. Murzabayev) are our recommendations. The first five tests will also be offered in France.

Helvic Dream the star on the Curragh

Curragh, Sunday 10 April: Two Group 3 races take centre stage at the Curragh today. The Alleged Stakes (4th race/16.05pm/55,000 Euro/2010m) is aimed at four-year-olds and older horses. Last year`s fourth-placed Helvic Dream (Chris Hayes) crowned his career with victory in the Gold Cup (Group 1) over Broome and has not competed since. In his season debut, the Meade charge will face High Definition (Ryan Moore), who was last without opportunities in the English St Leger (Group 1). List winners Georgeville (Colin Keane) and Layfayette (Oisin Orr) are other contenders with good chances.

In the Gladness Stakes (5th race/16.40 h/55,000 Euro/1410 m) three-year-old and older horses will meet. Markaz Paname (Colin Keane) is highly traded after his handicap victory in Naas. A fierce rival for the three-year-old is Thunder Moon (Shane Crosse), who was successful in the classic Vincent O`Brien National Stakes. He played no part in a Group 3 race on a trip to Riyadh. Belle Image (Robbie Colgan) ran well enough in the Prix Rothschild (Group 1) when fifth to play a supporting role here. Lustown Baba (Ben Coen) gained condition here a fortnight ago and, like Strapped (Kevin Manning) who finished third here in the Marble Hill Stakes (Group 3), has every chance.

Comeback of Mare Autralis

Longchamp, Sunday, 10 April: The posh track in Longchamp opens its gates today and offers an eight-race programme. In addition to two Group 3 and one Listed class, the Prix d`Harcourt (6th race/17.00/130,000 Euro/2000 m) is one of the highlights.

Six horses are competing for Group 2 honours and four of them recently met in the Prix Exbury (Group 3). Hurricane Dream (Christophe Soumillon), Skalleti (Maxime Guyon) and Mr de Pourceaugnac (Hugo Besnier) finished close behind the winning Pretty Tiger in second to fourth, while Dawn Intello (Gerald Mosse) was shuffled to the rear early on after racing in the leading group. Skalleti is the defending champion, he later went on to win the Prix d`Ispahan (Group 1) and the Dallmayr Prize (Group 1) in Munich. Sealiway (Mickael Barzalona) carries one kilo more than Skalleti. The Graffard protégé landed his biggest coup after finishing second in the French Derby at Ascot, where he pinned the Champion Stakes (Group 1) to his banner. German hopes rest on Gestüt Schlenderhans Mare Australis (Olivier Peslier). Twelve months ago, the five-year-old finished in second place behind Skalleti, went on to win the Prix Ganay (Group 1) and then took a break of almost a year due to injury.

Cleangame with allowance, Elie de Beaufour from the front

Paris-Vincennes, Saturday 9 April: the first main event of today`s Plateau de Gravelle event addresses the older horses in the Prix Jean Riaud (7th race/17.35/90,000 euros/2850m). Burdened with allowance is Cleangame (Jean-Michel Bazire), who last time out in the Prix deu Bois du Vincennes (Group 3) only had to acknowledge the outstanding Ampia Mede Sm just ahead of him. Gu d`Heripre (Jean-Philippe Monclin) was third after a few strokes, ahead of Rebella Matters (Christophe Martens) and Fakir du Lorault (Francois Lecanu), who were already further behind. Diable de Vauvert (Tony Le Beller) crowned his career with a triumph in the Prix de Paris (Group 1), but will not have it easy again this time with a handicap. Bazire`s second chance is Elie de Beaufour (Nicolas Bazire), who is favourably placed in the race from the basic mark. Five victories in the winter meeting speak for the Royal-Dream son, who currently failed a gallop in the Prix du Bois du Vincennes.

Saddle trotters contest the Prix Theophile Lallouet (8th race/18.05/120,000 Euro/2700m) at Group 2 level. Clegs des Champs (David Thomain) is considered favourite after his victory in the Prix Henri Desmontils (Group 3) over Fire Cracker (Anthony Barrier) and Chalimar de Guez (Jeann-Yann Ricart). Diamant de Treabat (Clement Frecelle), who has always been a front-runner in the Monté business and who recently showed a superior performance in the Prix du Pontavice de Heussy (Group 3), cannot be ignored in the front-running field, just like Etoile de Bruyere (Adrien Lamy), who finished third in the Prix de Cornulier (Group 1).

Ten-year-old mare favoured in Grand National

Aintree, Saturday 9 April: The Grand National (6th race/16.15/1m pounds/6907m), run as a Group 3 Handicap Chase and fully booked with 40 horses, is the standout event at Aintree today.

Minella Times (Rachael Blackmore) is one of those in contention as last year`s winner, but a good performance from the nine-year-old is doubtful after two misses in preparation. Owner John McManus has two more hot irons in the fire in the form of Any Second Now (Mark Walsh) and Enjoy d`Allen (Conor Orr), who romped in the Bobbyjo Chase (Group 3) at Fairyhouse. The English bookmakers have picked Snow Leopardess (Aidan Coleman) as the favourite. The ten-year-old has three wins to her name. Here, the hope of trainer Charlie Longsdon, who is already working as a broodmare, won a Group 3 Handicap Chase in December. Escaria Ten (A. Heskin) brought the aforementioned Any Second Now to the brink of defeat, he should have a good chance as should Burrows Saint (Paul Townend) who came in 42 lengths back. Five horses are entered in the race by Gordon Elliott for Gigginstown House Stud. Among those meant are Delta Work (Jack Kennedy), successful at Cheltenham, and Run Wild Fred (Davy Russell), who finished a good second in an amateur ride the day before. Eclair Surf (Tom Bellamy) runs reliably to the front and, like Longhouse Poet (Darragh O`Keeffe) and Fiddlerontheroof (Brendan Powell) who have stood out with good performances, would be no surprise as winners.

Fakir d`Oudairies like last year?

Aintree, Friday 8 April: In the midst of it all is the Grand National Festival at Aintree, where the Marsh Chase (4th race/16.30pm/250,000 pounds/4000m) known as The Melling Chase is one of the highlights today.

The Joseph O`Brien-prepared Fakir d`Oudairies (Mark Walsh) won the fixture twelve months ago. With another winning score in the Ascot Chase (Group 1) in February, the seven-year-old presented himself well prepared for today`s task. Also in top form is Funambule Sivola (Charlie Deutsch), who came home easily in the Game Spirit Chase (Group 2) against Sceau Royal (Daryl Jacob) and Hitman (Bryony Frost), and recently in the Queen Mother Champion Chase (Group 1) only had to acknowledge the strolling Energumene in front of him. For Sceau Royal, it will be his second start at Aintree in exactly six years. On that occasion he finished last in the Juvenile Hurdle (Group 1). Allmankind (Harry Skelton) won a Group 2 Handicap Chase here in October and is expected to finish well ahead in the National Spirit Hurdle (Group 2) despite his recent slip. Captain Guinness (Rachael Blackmore) has consistently performed well this season and, like Mister Fisher (James Bowen) who won the Silviniaco Conti Chase (Group 2), cannot be discounted.

Curtain up for the Grand National Festival

Aintree, Thursday, 7 April: The famous Grand National Festival starts today at Aintree near the city of Liverpool. Among the first highlights is the Bowl Chase (3rd race/15.55pm/250,000 pounds/5020m). Clan Des Obeaux (Harry Cobden) won the match last year and has the best chance to defend his title. However, he will face Eldorado Allen (Brendan Powell) and Royale Pagaille (Charlie Deutsch), who recently crossed the line well ahead of the ten-year-old in the Denman Chase (Group 2). Also a tough opponent is Protectorate (Harry Skelton), who finished third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup (Group 1), and Kemboy (Paul Townend), who ran well enough when fifth in the Irish Gold Cup (Group 1) to make a good showing here.

Second Group 1 race of the day is the Aintree Hurdle (4th race/16.30pm/250,000 pounds/4020m) with Epatante (Aidan Coleman) in the role of favourite. The eight-year-old from Nicky Henderson`s quarters sold magnificently during the Cheltenham Festival in the Champion Challenge Trophy (Group 1) behind the unlosable Honeysuckle, confirming her previous victory in the Christmas Hurdle (Group 1) over Glory And Fortune (Stan Sheppard), ahead of whom Zanahiyr (Jack Kennedy) finished a good third at Cheltenham. Brewin`upastorm (Sean Bowen) made up for unfortunate running in the Relkeel Hurdle (Group 2) with good results and, like Monmiral (Harry Cobden) who won the Juvenile Hurdle (Group 1) here a year ago, is in contention for a top finish.

Top three-year-olds in Deauville

Deauville, Thursday 7 April: Separated by sexes, two Group 3 examinations for three-year-old horses, each worth 80,000 euros, will be decided today in Deauville. The stallions are under order in the Prix Djebel (2nd race/14.25 h/1400 m). According to the trade press, My Fancy (Maxime Guyon), who is currently third in the Prix Omnium II (List race), could be the winner. Three horses with fresh winning form are Nesr Shalghoda (Theo Bachelot), Loubeisien (Stephane Pasquier) and Kingentleman (Cristian Demuro). They are among the closest favourites, as is the debuting Liyann (Christophe Soumillon), who already showed off here in August. Rock Boy (Mickael Barzalona) has not yet lost a race in his two-start career.

In the Prix Imprudence (3rd race/15.00/1400 m), all the mares are seasonal debutants except for Txope (Aurelien Lemaitre), who finished third in Chantilly. Accakaba (Maxime Guyon) and Fleur d`Iris (Mickael Barzalona) fought out the Prix du Calvados (Group 2) among themselves here and rally many observers behind them. The latter later disappointed in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Group 1) in a beaten field. Zellie (Olivier Peslier) won the mares` classic very easily ahead of Who Knows (Theo Bachelot), among others, who finished third behind Txope and ahead of Fleur d`Iris in her last appearance before the break in the Prix Miesque (Group 3). Malavath (Christophe Soumillon) earned big money with second place in the Breeders` Cup (Group 1) in the USA. Osmose (Cristian Demuro) and Masiel (Tony Piccone) moved into the winter break with victories.

Bazire with two chances in Angers

Angers, Wednesday, 6 April: The Grand Prix Angers Loire Metropole (1st race/13.50 hrs/64,000 Euro/3100 m) on the track of the same name will start with a balanced Group 3 race.

Jean-Michel Bazire has two horses with good chances at the start, which did not come into their own in the Prix d`Amérique (Group 1). The champion himself pilots Feydeau Seven, who flashed his great ability in the Prix de Belgique (Group 2) and won easily against Rebella Matters. The mare last ran in the Prix du Bois de Vincennes (Group 3) and finished a decent fifth. Carnaval du Vivier (Clement Duvaldestin), Cash du Rib (Jean Dersoir) and Elvis du Vallon (David Thomain) currently fulfilled expectations in Caen behind the winning favourite and are eligible for a top placing. Decoloration (Gabriele Gelormini) and Epsom d`Herfraie (Eric Raffin) must be taken into account after their strong honours in Laval and Vincennes respectively.

Stayer in the Prix Right-Royal

Chantilly, Wednesday 6 April: The highlight of today`s eight-race event at Chantilly is the Prix Right-Royal (6th race/18.45/52,000 Euro/3000m), which is part of the Listed class.

Darzan (Christophe Soumillon), victorious in his last start in Deauville, is in high demand, but the four-year-old trained by Mikel Delzangles faces strong competition. Joie de Soir (Augustin Madamet) and Lubiane (Marie Velon), who were placed in the Prix Belle de Nuit (Group 3), and Palus Argenteus (Anthony Crastus) and Castle (Maxime Guyon), who were placed first in the Grand Prix du Department (Listed race), will also be in with a good chance. Tangut (Hugo Journiac), who finished a good second in Rome before the break, changed hands for 640,000 euros last year and now runs for Georg von Opel. Call The Wind (Olivier Peslier) and Karlstad (Mickael Barzalona) finished under value in the Prix du Cadran (Group 1), they should not go unnoticed. Brokeback Mountain (Gregory Benoist) should also not be judged by his recent run.

Waldstar and Parol in Saint-Cloud

Saint-Cloud, Tuesday, 5 April: Today`s eight-race event in Saint-Cloud has plenty of treats in store. In the three-year-old comparison Prix Tourbillon (3rd race/15.00 h/35,000 Euro/2100 m), Waldstar (Mickael Barzalona), trained by Andre Fabre for Gestüt Fährhof/Gestüt Ammerland, will make his seasonal debut.

The Sea-The-Stars son already won last year. His schedule includes the French Derby. His main opponents include Tyrolo (Cristian Demuro), who won twice on the Riviera this year, and Sabio Cen (Aurelien Lemaitre), who had already defeated Waldstar in Fontainebleau. Orange Vif (Tony Piccone) has plenty of stamina and could provide the surprise.

The Prix Canot (7th race/17.20/28,000 Euro/2000 m) is the target of Bohumil Nedorostek`s Parol (Christophe Soumillon). The three-time Dortmund sand track winner and winner of another dirt fixture at Chantilly will be tested by Andre Fabres Kertez (Maxime Guyon), who has a fresh track win to his name from March 10. Hayzum (Gregory Benoist) has already been seen in the Grand Prix de Paris (Group 1) when taking the honours from In Swoop. In his second appearance after a long break, he could be further along this time.

Interesting three-year-olds in the Prix le Sancy

Chantilly, Monday 4 April: The Derby track in Chantilly has nine races on offer to start the week. Among the better races is the Prix le Sancy (3rd race/14.50pm/€35,000/1200m), reserved for three-year-olds, which pits six mares against two stallions.

The highest weight is carried by Le Cadeau (Mickael Barzalona), trained by Henri-Alex Pantall. The sander-tested Dabirsim son impressed here on his seasonal debut in a Listed race when finishing a close fourth and with further improvement he is expected to win. Sunday Best (Christophe Soumillon) and Josejosephine (Yoann Rousset) made their acquaintance in the Prix d`Arenberg at Group 3 level, but did not play a role. Their good performances outside the higher level races speak for them. Diadema (Stephane Pasquier) pleased in her last appearance in Vichy when she finished second ahead of Miramar (Ronan Thomas), who was a good List fourth in Deauville before the break. Sassy Rascal (Delphine Santiago) runs for German interests and is prepared by Erika Mäder. Like her travelling companion Summer`s Day (Pierre Bazire), the newcomer from England can point to decent performances. Ivory Spring (Maxime Guyon) is overdue for victory after three consecutive honours this year.

Group 3 in Auteuil

Auteuil, Sunday, April 3: Eight top-class steeplechase races will be decided today in Auteuil. Once again, the Prix du President de la Republique (3rd race/15.15pm/225,000 euros/4700m), run as a Group 3 handicap, has been very well received. The chase race features 18 horses and sees fresh Listed winner King Elvis (Pierre Dubourg) as the winner. Among the referenced are the top six finishers in the Prix Lutteur III, which was decided here March 12. Avel de Kerbarh (Felix de Giles) won the black-type test by three lengths over Gooaaal (Clement Lefebvre), who defended second place against Black Boa (Lucas Zuliani), Darling des Bordes (James Reveley), Doux Dingue (Angelo Zuliani) and On Your Mark (Baptiste Meme).

The Prix Fleuret (5th race/16.25pm/135,000 euros/4400m) will be another chasing test decided over the heavy jumps. Latino des Isles (Pierre Dubourg) came back from the break with a class performance in the Prix Duc d`Anjou (Group 3). The protégé of Arnaud Chaille-Chaille defeated Tonguetted (James Reveley) by a narrow length and became the series winner. Before that, the gelding won the Prix Congress (Group 2) against Iniesta du Gouet (Angelo Zuliani) and Primco (Felix de Giles). The only mare in the field is the immensely fit La Cheneviere (Theo Chevillard). In her favor is a current win over Primco and the favorable brand.

Cast off in Mannheim

Mannheim, Sunday, 03 April: April begins in German gallop racing with the season opener at the Waldrennbahn in Mannheim. Seven tests between 11:20 am and 2:30 pm will be held. Races 1 to 5 are also part of the PMU card.

The sport can be seen, as there are two equalisers III. On the 1,900 metre course, a local hero could be in front with King Platon (T Scardino).

Over 1,400 metres Frank Fuhrmann is represented twice with Circuskind (N. Wagner) and Libertadore (A. v. d. Troost). Degas (S. Biessey) from Katja Gernreich`s stable was already victorious here in September. The local representative Mr Gent (T. Scardino), who performed very well in Dortmund after a break, could win. Fair Hurricane (A. v. d. Troost), who was named after him, also has a chance.

The quadruple bet with a payout of 10,000 Euros will be offered in the 5th race (Equalisation IV, 1,900 m). Lucky Lips (T. Scardino) and Eat the Dust (A. Pietsch) could be the reserve horses.

Revenge in the Prix Edmond Blanc

Saint-Cloud, Saturday, 2 April: The first Group 3 race of today`s event in Saint-Cloud is reserved for the three-year-old fillies.

The Prix Penelope (2nd race/14.33 h/80.000 Euro/2100 m) will be contested by seven horses. Agave (Olivier Peslier) goes into the match unbeaten. She recently won the Prix Rose de Mai (Listed race) in strong style against Anne de Cleves (Mickael Barzalona) and La Mandola (Eddy Hardouin), for whom a place money is again within the realms of possibility. Allada (Jean-Bernard Eyquem) did not have to push her limits in her Maiden success and, like Queen Trezy (Christophe Soumillon), who came second in the Prix des Reservoirs (Group 3), is registering the best chances.

In the Prix Edmond Blanc (5th race/16.26 h/80,000 Euro/1600 m), last year`s winner Wally (Cristian Demuro) grants revenge to the surprisingly defeated The Revenant (Christophe Soumillon). While the Rouget protégé starts without a preparatory race, the seven-year-old Group 1 winner successfully rehearsed for today`s task in the Prix Altipan (List race) here. Sibilia Spain (Aurelien Lemaitre) finished fourth twice at classic level last year. In the Prix de l`Opera (Group 1) it was only enough for seventh place. Duhail (Olivier Peslier) also contested his last race on the day of the `Arc de Triomphe` in the Prix de la Foret (Group 1) and also came away empty-handed. Fast Raaj (Gregory Benoist) underlined his good form with a sand track victory in the Prix Anabaa (Classe 1).

Classic Trials Day in Leopardstown

Leopardstown, Saturday 2 April: Two trials are scheduled for the classic 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Leopardstown today.

Stallions and geldings contest the 2000 Guineas Trial Stakes (2nd race/15.35pm/40,000 Euro/1400m). Dr Zempf (Colin Keane) already announced himself emphatically in the Phoenix Stakes (Group 1) as a narrowly beaten second and is one of the closest favourites. Aidan O`Brien sends three horses into the race with Glounthaune (Ryan Moore), who won here in the Killavullan Stakes (Group 3) and later had no chance in the Breeders` Cup, Howth (Wayne Lordan) and The Acropolis (Emmet McNamara), who were recently without possibilities behind their stablemate. Jim Bolgers McTigue (Kevin Manning) moved to the break after a meagre performance in the Futurity Trophy Stakes (Group 1), he is expected back fully recovered according to the trainer.

In the 1000 Guineas Trial Stakes (3rd race/16.10pm/50,000 Euro/1400m), the route to victory will be via four-time winner Sacred Bridge (Colin Keane). She did not finish beyond midfield in her last appearance in the Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1). Contarelli Chapel (Ryan Moore) ended her maiden season early but was already showing potential. Agartha (Declan Mc Donogh), Pennine Hills (Dylan Browne McMonagle) and Seisai (Mikey Sheehy) are the hopefuls from Joseph O`Brien`s stable. Especially the former should play a major role after her good fourth place in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Group 1).

Interesting three-year-olds in the Prix Penthisilea

Paris-Vincennes, Friday, April 1: An evening card of seven races is on offer today at Paris-Vincennes. In the final Prix Penthesilea (7th race/22.11pm/70,000 euros/2700m), twelve three-year-old stallions/geldings that have not won 70,000 euros are under order at Group 3 level.

For four participants the Prix du Comte Pierre de Montesson (Group 1) was the last destination and as expected there was nothing for them. Jorgos de Guez (Nicolas Bazire) and Jakartas des Pres (Franck Nivard) fared best, competing in the back third for the smallest premium. Just For Lova (Antoine Lherete) and Jasmin Merite (Julien Raffestin) lapsed into canter and were reprimanded. In the Prix Leopold Verroken (Group 3), Jakartas des Pres finished a very good honorable mention well ahead of the chanceless Jorgos de Guez, who had his last win here in January against Jaguar Marancourt (Jean-Philippe Monclin). The latter went on to win twice, each time beating Javanais Delo (David Thomain). Jaguar Wit (Tony Le Beller) and Jetpack (Eric Raffin) were recently in the picture behind Jaguar Marancourt. Dundee As (Matthieu Abrivard) makes his France debut on a winning streak from Italy and could well take the butter off the hosts. Jumanji Sibey (Louis Baudron) put in a decent performance in the Prix Emmanuel Margouty (Group 2), finishing fourth and second last.
