Evening racing

There is evening racing at 3 tracks - Ballinrobe in Ireland, Great Leighs (all-weather) and Kelso (N.H.). The track at Great Leighs has received great praise, but the facilities for racegoers are nowehere near ready and the paying public will not be allowed n for several weeks yet, while the floodlights are also not yet in operation, so that the first race is an early 18.20 CET. Unfportunately only 3 are likely to line up for the class 3 conditions race for 3yos at 19.50, in which ark Johnston´s Road t Love (Robert Winston) appears to have a simple task. By contrast, it now ooks much tougher for Mia´s Boy (Chris Dwyer/ Jimmy Quinn), who is going for a fourtimer in the class 3 handicap at 19.20; the handicapper has raised the rating by a total of 19 lbs, and at these weights Kay Gee Be (Mark Wallace/ Jamie Spencer) can be preferred. Ballinrobe stages a mixed meeting, with 3 flat races, 3 over hurdles and a bumper, while Kelso´s two best races are both class 3 events over 2 3/4 miles; My Turn Now (Charlie Mann/ Noel Fehily) was easily the best of the runners in the novice chase at 19.30 over hurdles, and if he jumps well on his first effort over fences can defeat the consistent Contact Damcer (Peter Bowen/ Seamus Durack). Twelve Paces (Peter Monteith/ Timmy Murphy) and Etched in Snow (Nicky Richards/ Rose Davidson) can fight out the finish of the handicap hurdle at 20.00, while Monteith should also go close in the novice hurdle an hour later with German-bred Sinatas (Ryan Mania)

Pontefract and Worcester

There is also racing this afternoon at Pontefract (flat) and Worcester (N.H.). At Worcester, thr steeplechase course is still unfit after the spring floods, and there will be 5 hurdles races and two bumpers. Trainer Ala King and jockey Robert Thornton can team up to win two races, the opening maiden hurdle at 15.00 CET with Bormo, and the 3 mile handicap hurcdle an hour later with Otarie; the latter must give weight away all round, but has won his last two races in opod style, and the opposition does not look strong. The novices hurdle at 17.15 should concern only Adroit Approach (Andrew Hales/ Wayne Kennedy) and Mambo des Mottes (Venetia Williams/ Sam Thomas), who is reverting to the smaller obstacles after several flops over fences. At Pontefract, where the ground will be very soft, the best race is the class 3 fillies handicap over 10 furlongs at 17.05. Henry Cecil´s German-bred Born Tobouggie (Tom Quealy), who won on his debut at Notingham a fortnight ago, faces a strong challenge from Richard Hannon´s La Colombina (Paul Hanagan), who is making her seasonal debut but showed progressive form last season. These are both 3yo´s; Ella (Alan Swinbank/ Neil Callan) looks best of the older horses.

Ascot opens doors

The royal racecourse at Ascot opens its doors today for the 2008 flat season with a strong card. Main feature is the Group Three Sagaro Stakes over 2 miles at 16.55 CET, an early Gold Cup trial. Connections of 9yo Distinction Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore)are still hoping for another crack at the big race of the Royal meeting, in which case he has to beat Soapy Danger (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning). The latter, who won the Queens Vase over this CD in 2006, later suffered an injury, but was back to form in a minor event at Doncaster last time out. The listed Paradise Stakes over a mile at 16.20 also has runners, who are hipoing for Group One succss later on, notably Cesare (James Fanshawe/ Jamie Spencer), who was a Group Two winner over this CD last July. However Royal Oath (John Gosden/ Jimmy Fortune), who was 1 1/4 lengths behind him then, now reopposes n 7lbs better terns, so there should be little in it today. The listed Pavilion Stakes for 3yo´s over 6 furlongs at 17.30 shpould go to Peter Chapple-Hyam, who saddles two runners Fat Boy (Frankie Dettori) and Spirit of Sharjah (Alan Munro); on Newmarket running, Frankie´s mount must be preferred, while seasonal debutant Tajdeef (Barry and Richard Hills) looks the biggest threat.

German runners in France today

after another German success yesterday (Fareion at Longchamp),German-trained runners turn out in mass today at Maisons-Laffitte and more successes could be on thre way. In the opening tiercé handicap over 2400 metres at 13.50 CET, Lord John (Werner Baltromei/ Dominique Boeuf) and Spectra (Miroslav Rulec/ Olivier Peslier) take their chances, while in the following mile race Peslier teams up with Uwe Stoltefuss´ Ler Big, with Wlettrümer (Andreas Trybuhl/ William MOPmngil) and Tumult (Erika Mäder/ Lennart Hammer-Hansen) also entered. Baltromei has three more runners later on, Samiro in a race for 3yo colts over 2100 metres at 14.50 and Lady Marian in a similar race for fillies an hour later, both with Dominique Boeuf in bthe saddle, and Vicchio in the mile handicap with Antony Crastus. There is also trotting from Enghien.

N.H.racing at Towcester

N.H. racingtakes a bac seat for the next few months, but Towcester stages jump racing today and has attracted some large fields. Bormo (Alan King/ Robert Thornton) looks the best bet on the card; he has een in the money, rnning against decent oüpposition, on all his 4 hurdles starts and faces relatively weak oppositon in the maiden hurdle at 16.10; Nicky Henderson´s German-bred First Point (Andrew Tinkler) looks the only conceivable danhger, and should certainly be much better suited by the faster ground today. The class 4 handicap hurdle over 2 miöles at 17.10 looks very open with some interesting jockey bookings. Alan King puts up an amateur on his Penny Isöland, a recent winner on the flat, while stable jockey "Choc" rides Rawaabet for trainer Paul Hiatt. Gary Mooee has booked claimer Eamon Dehdashti for top-weight Maximix, while son Jamie partners Final Bid for Mick Quinlan, while Tony McCoy rides Palace Walk, coming off a 20 month break, for Brendan Powell.

Yarmouth and Windsor

Flat racing on turf todaycomes from Yarmouth (afternoon) and Windsor (evening), and Yarmouth, who have come into strong criticism for their low prize-money, have a slightly better card this time. Certainly the 6 furlongs handicap at 16.30 CET is a valuable race for the track. Cape (Paul Howling/ Jamie Spencer) came from a long way back to brat a large field at Doncaster, is the likely favourite here, but Blue Tomato (David Nicholls/ Silvestre de Souza) is dangerous on his favoured fast ground. The question mark here is Marco Botti´s Orpenindeed (Kirsty Milczarek), wh had quite decent form in Italy, but is racing for the first time on turf in Britain; his previous British starts have all been on the all-weather at Lingfield and it is possible that he has been underestimated by the handicapper. Top Seed looks the best bet of the afternoon in the class 6 handicap over 11 1/2 furlongs at 18.00; previously much better than this grade, he showed something like his old form when slamming a large field at Bath last week and this race appears to be no better, so his 6 lbs penalty should not stop him scoring again. At Windsor it could be significant that Frankie Dettori takes the ride on Jeremy Noseda´s Checklow in thje 10 furlong mnaiden for 3yo´s at 20.40. The colt holds a Derby engagement and made an excellent debut at Newmarket 12 days ago. The damnger could be the Queen´s Drum Major (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore), a beautifully-bred son of Sadlers Wells. It will be interesing to see if the owner makes the short trip from Windsor Castle to see her colt run. Roger Charlton´s Colorado Blue (Steve Drowne) has also shown promise and looks next best.

All-weather action at Lingfield and Southwell

A typical Monday, with low-level sport at all 5 tracks today, including the two all-weather meetings at Lingfield this afternoon and Southwell this evening. Most interesting event at the former track is the mile race for 3yo maidens at 15.50 CET; on recent form the obvious candidates are Henry Cecil´s Reine de Violette (Tom Queally), fourth at Nottingham a fortnight ago, and William Haggas´ Maghya (Ryan Moore), runner-up here over 7 furlongs at the beginning of the month, but there are some debutants entered who could well prove dangerous, notably Roger Charlton´s well-bred Caro George (Steve Drowne), who cost 170,000 guineas a yearling, and Upstart (Jimmy Quinn), possibly Henry Cecil s second string. At Southwell, German-bred Limonia (Mike Murphy/ Fergal Lynch), who likes this track and has finished runner-up here three times already this year, can finally get his head in frot in thr 6 furlongs handicap at 18.55. The best race here is the class 4 5 furlongs handicap at 19.35; only 6 runners, but all have form, and many of them are CD specialists, notably Diminuto (Mark Usher/ Amy Baker), who has an excellent record here. So does Ann Stokell´s Pawan, who has top-weight and is coming off a near 4 months break. However Steel City Boy (Declan Carroll), who won his only race at this venue, looks best on current form, after running well at Ripon against stronger opposition on Saturday.

Excellent card at Longchamp

Therre is sme excellent racing at Longchamp, with 9 races, theree of them at group level. Main event is the Group One Prix Ganay over 2100 metres at 16.20 CET, in which German challenger Saddex (Peter Rau/ Thierry Thulliez) faces 6 opponents. Saddex has already proved that he is capable to making a strong show in this class and the shorter distance may be to his advantage. His main dangers are Duke of Marmalade (Aidan O´Brien/ Johnny Murtagh), Zambezi Sun (Dascal Bary/ Stephane Pasquier) and the filly Mrs. Lindsay (Francois Rohaut/ Christophe Lemaire). Despite the good weather, the going will still be soft , which will not suit Germany´s t and top stayer Le Miracle (Werner Baltromei/ Dominique Boeuf) in the Group Three Prix de Barbeville over 3100 metres at 15.15. In addition he has a Group One penalty and the task of giving 4 kilos to the smart unbeaten Coastal Path (Andre Fabre/ Stephane Pasquier) looks almost impossible. Fabre and Pasquier can also team up towin the Prix Vanteaux for 3yo filles at 15.45 with Proviso. Other German runners on the card are Sascha Smcrzek´s Fareion (Dominique Boeuf) and Südsturm (Delphine Santiago), who run in two divisions of the 1400 metres handicap at 14.45 and 18.20, and Baltromei´s pair Austrian (Boeuf) and Naxon (Johan Victoire) in a similar race at 17.50.

Ireland today

There is flat racing at Navan and a mixed meeting at Gowran Park (4 flat races, 2 over hurdles and a bumper) in OIreladf Tpoday. At the latter track, John Oxx and Mick Kinane can land a double in the two opening mile maidens with Timari and Be Smart; the former is out of German Group One winner Timarida. est race at Navan is te Vintage Crop Stakes, a listed race over 1 mile 5 furlongs. Aidan O´Brien´s Yeats won this last year with Seamus Heffernan in the saddle and they will be out to repeat this win today and follow the same course to the Ascot Gold Cup. However it will not be plain sailing today, especially on this soft ground, as both Red Moloney (Kevin Prendergast/ Declan McDonogh) and Alfie Flits (Alan Swinbank/ Robert Winston) will be better suited by the conditions.

Flat racing at Brighton

The only flat racing at Britain today is at Brighton, where the card consists entirely of class 5 and 6 races. German-bred Napoletano is very inconsistent, but conditions may be right for him in the 7 furlongs handicap at 15.40 CET. Another Gerrman-bred with a chance is the Sean Curran´s Sagunt, who runs in the 10 furlongs handicap at 17.25 with apprentice William Carson (grandson of Willie) in the saddle; he landed a gamble on this track last year. Bob´s Your Uncle (Johnny Portman/ Seb Sanders), who made a good comeback recently, can win the 1 1/2 miles race at 16.50

2009 starts today!

Yesterday was the official end of the 2007-8 N.H. season, but the new season gets under way today with racing at Ludlow and Wetherby. After the excitement of the last few weeks, the cards are nothing to get excited about, but there is some quite competitive racing, especially at Ludlow, where Corran Ard (Evans Williams/ Paul Moloney) and Commemoration Day (Nigel Twiston-Davies/ Paddy Brennan) can fight out the finish of the 2 mile novice chase at 15.30 CET. Shavansky (Charlie Mann/ Noel Fehily) was an excellent runner-up in a good race at Ascot last time and can take the novice hurdle at 16.05, though Alan King´s improving filly Atomic Winer (Robert Thornton) looks a big danger. Top-weight Kew Jumper (Andrew Turnell/ Mark Grant) is in good form and can win the 2 1/2 mile handicap chase at 16.40. The ground will be riding fast at Wetherby, where Howard Johnson´s consistent Bafana Boy (Denis O´Regan) can score in the 3 mile handicap hurdle at 16.00. The hurdle race for lady riders at 16.25 looks very open, but the two top-weights Pam Sly´s Upright Ima and Donald McCain´s Wold Fern have two of the most experienced jockeys in Serena Brotherton and Rose Davidson respectively and should be involved. Davidson can also go close on Lucinda Russell´s Manadam in the maiden hurdle at 18.05, where Poseidon´s Secret (Charlie Mann/ Kevin Tobin) looks the main threat

German runners abroad

There are plenty of German runners abroad this weekend, with pride f place going to Quijano in Hong Kong tomorrow morning and addex in thr Prix Ganay tomorrow afternoon. Tosay Peter Schiergen send 5 runners to Milan and has good prospects in taking the main feature, the Group Three Premio Ambrosiano over 2000 metres at 17.25 CET, where he has 2 runners, Axxos with Terry Hellier and Davidoff with Filip Minarik. French racing today comes from Auteuil (N.H.) and Reims (trotting). At Auteuil there are 2 Group Two races, the Prix Jean Stern for 4yo´s over 4100 metres at 15.15 and the Prox Lein Rambaud over hurdles at 16.50. Mid Dancer (Arnaud Chaille-Chaille/ Jacques Ricou) is the clear favourite here; he has won 18 of his 19 starts over jumps, and although he is probably better over fences, he won this race last year and stands out on ratings. Harry Hack s Bartolo (Marc Lamazou-Larasse) is an interesting runner in the handicap hurdle at 15.50 for "jeunes jockeys"

Leicester, Market Rasen and Ripon

There is also flat racing this afternoon from Leicester and Ripon as well as N.H. racing from Market Rasen. Obviously nothing can compare to the racing at Sandown, but Leicester does stage a listed race over 7 furlongs at 16.50, which should concern mainly Al Qasi (Peter Chappe-Hyam/ Alan Munro), who had no chance last time in the Hong Kong Mile, but is the clear choice on earlier form, and Barry Hills´ Captain Marvellous, with son Michael in the saddle. Alan Munro can complete a double on Sir Michael Stoute´s Tartan Bearer in the maiden race over 10 furlongs at 18.00; this brother to Group One winner Golan has 15 opponents but should still outclass the lot of them. At Ripon the main event is a class 2 handicap over 2 miles at 16.40; Michael Bell´s Highland Legacy (Neil Callan) showed much improved form last autumn and can continue his winning run here, with Winged d´Argent (Bernard Llewellyn/ William Buick) the main threat. John Gosden´s smart Raincoat (Ted Durcan) looks a near certainty - at very short odds- in the final conditions race over 1 1/2 miles at 18.55. At Market Rasen, the class 3 handicap chse over 2 12 miles at15.55 is the best race; this should mainly concern top-weight Ruairi (Suzy Smith/ Colin Bolger) and last-time-out winner King Mak (Peter Beaumont/ Gary Berridge)

bet365 day at Sandown

An excellent card at Sandown today, where bookmaker bet365 is the sponsor. This is the final day of the official N.H. season, and although there are two pattern races on the flat, jumps racing takes centre stage with the bet 365 Gild Cup (previously Whitbread), a handicap chase over 3 miles 5 furlongs at 16.20 CET with 19 runners. As always, this looks wde open, but if Irish de Balme (Sean Curran/ Charlie Huxley) can reproduce his running of last Saturday, when he ran away with the Scottish Grand National, he would have an outstanding chance. He is miles out of the handicap, but so he was last week, and last year Hot Weld brought off the double, so his chance is there for all to see. Tony Martin´s Royal County Star (Robbie Colgan) is the bookmakers favourite here after his second place in the Irish Grand National, while consistent Ungaro (Keith Revely/ Sam Thomas) is another fancied runner. The Grade Two celebration Chase over 2 miles at 15.40 features a German runner, Fiepes Shuffle (Christian von der Recke/ Jamie Moore), but this front-runner (who fell at the last when looking te winner on his last trip to Sandown) faces a very stiff task against the likes of Monet´s Garden (Nicky Richards/ Dominic Elsworth) and Andreas (Paul Nicholls/ Ruby Walsh). Nicholls and Walsh can team up to win the 2 1/2 mile handicap hurdle at 15.10 with top-weight Earth Planet, where German-bred Backbord is not without a chance; another German-bred hurdler who should go well in the conditions is Caracciola (Nicky Henderson/ Andrew Tinkler) at 14.40. On the flat, the Group Two Bet365 Mile at 16.55 is the main feature, but it is a rather sub-standard renewal and should concern mainly Major Cadeaux (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes) and Medicine Path (Peter Chapple-Hyam/ Jamie Spencer). The Group Three Classic Trial over 10 furlongs at 17.30 also looks a match, between Centennial (John Gosden/ Jimmy Fortune) and Feared in Flight (Barry Hills/ Darryll Holland)

Punchestown Festival - final day

Today is the fifth and final day of the Punchestown Festival and once again a very strong card with some huge fields. Main feature is the Grade One hurdle for 4yo´s at 17.20 CET, in which Alan King´s Franchoek (Tony McCoy) bids to continue the run of British successes at the meeting. He is the logical winner, following his excellent places at Cheltenham and Aintree, but one has to worry that his had season may catch up on him. Willie Mullins saddles the main danger in Quevega (Davy Condon), a very easy winner of both her starts over hurdles but steppiung up in grade, and possibly better suited by softer going. Won in the Dark (Sabrina Harty/ Davy Russell) has twice finished behind Franchoek this season, but could still spring a surprise here. With Ruby Walsh in England, Willie Mullins, who hasenjoyed a tremendous week, again relies on Davy Condon, who rides the beaten Serpentaria in the Grade Three mares hurdle at 16.10 and she should certainly be thereabouts. The Ballymore Handicap Hurdle over 2 1/2 milesat 17.55 is the richest European handicap hurdle with 150,000 euros to the winner and not surprisingly there is a maximum field of 25 runners. Ex-German Heavenly Blues (Ted Walsh/ Davy Russell) last ran over jumps a year ago, but was recently third onn the flat and looks to have good prospects here. It s not yet clear if top-weight Kalderon, who ran yesterday, will turn out again, or whether Tony Martin´s Leg Spinner, currently second reserve, will get in the race - if he does, he will probably start favourite.

Friday, April 25, 2008

France today

There is flat racing today at Toulouse, N.H. racing at Enghien and trotting this evening at Vincennes. The only German runner of the day is Mario Hofer´s Slipstream (Julien Marinov), who goes for the 3500 metres hurdles race at15.05 CET at Enghien. The stable is in excellent form and he has a definite chance of running into the money. Main event of the card comes half an hour later with the listed Prix Romati over 4500 metres, in which Francois Marie Cottin´s Princesse d´Anjou (Dean Gallagher) will start a red-hot favourite

Evening N.H. racing

There is N.H. racing this evening at Bangor and Chepstow, both in Wales, and at Newton Abbot; a glance a the map shows how ridiculous this constellaton is, with no racing at all in the north, east or south. At Bangor, Charlie Egeron´s Canalturn (Oliver Greenall) can take the maiden hurdle at 19.45 CET, while Quizzene (Alan King/ Gerard Tumelty) can follow up in the novice hurdle half an hour later. Royal Rationale (David Pipe/ Tom Scudamore) looks the likely winner of the maiden hurdle at 20.55 at Chepstow,m but the claiming chase there at 19.20 looks very tricky. Casalani (Jennie Candlish/ Lee Stephens) won a similar race recently at Uttoxeter from much higher-rated opposition, but in theory cannot hold Paul Nicholl´ Cerium (Liam Heard) - probably thre least succssful horse in the yard - and Chabrimal Minster (Richard Ford/ Timmy Murphy). Paul Nicholls may have better luc at Newton Abbot, where Oslot (Nick Scholfield) has only Templer (Philip Hobbs/ Darren O´Dwyer) to beat i the novice chase at 20.05. The novices handicap hurdle here at 19.35 looks very open; Michael Bell´s Rawdon (Charlie Huxley) ran quite well last time out and may be the answer to this puzzle

Sandown and Wolverhampton

There is flat racing this afternoon at Sandown and Wolverhampton (all-weather) and easily the best race is the Group Three Gordon Richards Stakes over 10 furlongs at 14.50 at Sandown. Sir Michael Stoute´s Ask (Ryan Moore) is the class act here, having been beaten by only a nose in the Canadian International last time out. However today´s trip seems on the short side, and some of Stoute´s runners have seemed to need their first race of the season, so some caution is advised. Ask holds Hattan (Clive Brittain/ Seb Sanders) on 2007 form, but the latter, who recently won the Lingfield Winter Derby, is racing over his ideal trip and could be a big danger, while Championship Point (Mick Channon/ Darryll Holland), also a recent winner, is another threat. John Gosden´ s Charm School (Jimmy Fortune) created a very favourable impression when winning a minor event at Doncaster last month and can take the mile race for 3yo´s at 16.00, while the 10 furlongs handicap for the same age group should go to Mark Johnston´s Captain Webb (Joe Fanning), who has won all his 3 starts in fine style and looks much better than this grade. Most interesting race at Wolverhampton is the 7 furlongs event for 3yo maidens at 15.15. Skadrak (Brian Meehan/ Robert Winston) started favourite and was beaten a short head at Ascot´s July meeting on his only outing so far, but faces some decent opposition today, notably Slugger O´Toole (Barry Hills/ Chris Catlin) and August Sale (Mark Johnston/ Royston Ffrench), while James Dean and Opera Prince were bith last-time-out runners-up and seem certain to win before long.

Perth, third and final day

Today is also the third and final day of Perth´s big meeting, but there are only 5 runners in the class 2 novicew chase at 15.40, which should be dominated by Modicum (Nicky Richards/ Rose Davidson) ands Marodima (Paul Nicholls/ Sam Thomas). The most spectacular race is te Highland National over 3 miles 7 furlongs at 17.35,which has attracte 18 runners. Hello Bud (Derek Wintle/ WillieMcCarthy) has won three races in a row and appears to be still improving. Michael Scudamore´s reliable Finzi (John Kington) is a bit of a plodder but stays for ever and should run into a place. Stamina is also required in the conditional jockeys handicap hurdle over 3 miles 3 furlongs at 16.55. Solway Bee (Miss L. Harrison/Ewan Whillans) was an easy winner here on Wednesday, while Kings Rock ( John Holt/ Tom Messenger) is on a hat-trick, but neither are proven over the distance, while Paul Nicholls´ So Now (Harry Skelton) stays well and could come out on top.

Punchestown Festival - day four

The Punchestown Festival continues for the fourth day when there are again two Grade One races on the card. So far the British trainers have cleaned up in the bug races, and Nicky Henderson´s Punjabi (Barry Geraghty) obviously has a great chance in the ACC Champion Hurdle at 17.20 CET. Not only was he a CD winner at this meeting last year, he ran on strongly to finish an excellent third in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, ahead of his two main Irish rivals today, Sublimity (John Carr/ Philip Carberry) and Harchibald (Noel Meade/ Paul Carberry). However the faster going today will be in favour of the two Irish runners so a reversal of the Cheltenham form is a definite possibility. There is certain to be an Irish winner in the 2 1/2 mile Champion Novice Hurdle at 17.55, where Fiveforthree (Willie Mullins/ Ruby Walsh) - third here over an inadequate trip on Tuesday - and Trafford Lad (Eamonn Sheehy/ Tom Doyle) should have the race between them. Fiveforthree has his rival more than 4 kengths behind when winning at Cheltenham, but again the form may not be upheld here. On the supporting card, Henderson´s German-bred Stellino (Tony McCoy) can take the novice hurdle over 2 miles at 18.30, but there is a huge field here, as in most of the other races.

German runners in France today

Oce again there are 3 French meetings this afternon, with Nancy having an early start, Chantilly normal times and Laval (trotting) a late start. There are numerous German-trained runners at the two flat meetings, as follows:

Nancy 1st race, 12.35 CET (steeplechase)
Allez Hopp (Manfred Weber/ PHilippe Suard)
Rosenbrief (Christian von der Recke/ Jan Korpas)

Nancy 3rd race, 13.35 (handicap, 2400 metres)
Montiras (Horst Steinmetz/ Davy Bonilla)

Nancy 4th race, 14.05, 3yo, 1950 metres
Thargelia (Peter Sciergen/ Filip Minarik)
Skittle (Matthias Keller/ Tony Piccione)
Tapisserie (v.d.Recke/ Alexander Pietsch)

Nancy 5th race, seller, 2400 metres
Cabari (Dieter Fechner/ Franck Foresi)
Mister Lodge (Keller/ Minarik)
Orfisio (v.d.Recke/ Thierry Gillet)

Nancy 6th race, 15.05, 4yo hurdles
Nearly Perfect (Schiergen/ Paul Johnson)
Primus (v.d.Recke/ Korpas)

Nancy 7th race, 15.35 handicap, 1950 metres
Zolinas (Wolfgang Gülcher/ Jean-Pierre Carvalho)
Lava Rock (Hans Walter Hiller/ Teddy Richer)

Chantilly 1st race, 13.50 handicap, 2400 metres
Kaliyan (Mario Hofer/ Andreas Suborics)

Chantilly 2nd race, 14.20, listed race, 1200 metres
Arc de Triomphe (Dieter Fechner/ Johan Victoire)

Chantilly 8th race, 17.20 handicap, 2400 metres
Lennon (Ralf Rohne/ Ioritz Mendizibal)
West Pacific (Rohne/ Sebastian Maillot)

Certainly several of these should be involved in the finish, and in our view the best chances of a German victory are in the two jumps races from Nancy

All-weather action this evening

Great Leighs, whose opening meeting last Sunday was generally ergarded as a big success (despite the obvious lack of facilities for spectators) stages its first evening meeting today, but the floodlights, which are apparently nt yet ready, will not be used. Nost interesting event is the 1 3/4 miles handicap at 19.20 CET. Only 6 runners, but quite an open race, with top-weight Chocolate Caramel (Amanda Perrett/ Jim Crowley) the likely favourite. Trifti (Jo Crowley/ Kevin Ghunowa) defeated Compton Falcon (Ger Butler/ Luke Morris) last time out, but the latter is now 8 lbs better off and both of them can go close. There is also evening all-weather racing from Southwell, where Pertemps Network (Mick Easterby/ Dale Gibson) can follow up his recent victory in the 1 1/2 miles handicap at 19.35. But don´t overlook oldtimer Kylkenny (Hughie Morrison/ Travis Block) - the 13yo loves this track, where he has already won 16 times.

Beverley and Fontwell

There is also racing this afternoon at Fontwell (N.H.) and Beverley (flat) and at the former track German-bred Donatessa (Charlie Mann/ Noel Fehily) can make up for a couple of disappointing performances in the mares maiden hurdle at 15.20 CET. The novice hurdle at 16.30 seems to lie between Archduke Ferdinand (Alan King/ Christian Williams), who has been off for a year, and Lupanar (Gary and Jamie Moore), while the handicap hurdle over the long distance of 3 miles 3 furlongs at 17.40 could involve Jug of Punch (Simon Lewis/ Colin Bolger) and River reine (Bob Buckler/ Daryl JacoB), both of whom win easly last time out. The best race at Beverley is the 7 1/2 furlongs handicap for 3yo´s at 16.10. Atabaa´s Pride (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning) and Albaqaa (Richard Fahey/ Paul Hanagan) are the two favourites on current form, but Kevin Ryan saddles three here and Jamie Spencer looks a very interesting booking for Thunderstruck, a CD winner last year.

Perth - day two

Perth also continues its big meeting ad offers a high class card with some large fields. Hwever only 6 run in the main event, the 3 miles novice hurdle at 16.20 CET; Tazbar (Keith Reveley/ Phil Kinsella), despite his Aintree flop, looks the obvious winner here. Quicuyo (Peter Monteith/ Ryan Mania), an own brother to Quijano (runs in Hong Kong at the weekend) goes for his fourth hurdle win of the season in the opening novices hurdle at 15.10 CET and despite top-weight is not without a chance. His trainer can also take the 3 mile handicap chase at 16.55 with easy last-time.out winner Standin Obligation (Timmy Murphy). The 2 mile handicap chase at 15.40 looks very tricky. German-bred Manhattan Boy (Philip Hobbs/ Richard Johnson) got off the mark over fences last time and now starts handicapping off a lower mark than his hurdles rating. Beggars Cap (Ferdy Murphy/ nRichard McGrath), going for a hat-trick, and Ormello (Lucinda Russell/ Peter Buchanan), whose stable is in good form, are just 2 of several dangers.

Punchestown Festival - day three

the Punchestown Festival continues today, its third day, and there are two Grade One races on The card, but the most spectacuar event is certain to be the La Touche Cup over 4 1/4 miles at 16.05CET, Ireland´s most important cross-country race. Trainer Enda Bolger has won this an incredible ten times running, and has a good chance today with top-weight Garde Champetre (Nina Carberry), who won a similar race at the Cheltenham N.H. Festival with several of these behind. However at the weights it would be no surprise if stable-companion Freneys Well (J.T.McNamara) comes out on top today, while others to consider are Wonderkid, beaten favourite at Cheltenham, and A New Story, fourth in the Irish Grand National. The World Series Hurdle over 3 miles at 17.50 is also in part a re-run of Cheltenham, where Kazal finished third and Blazing Bailey fourth. The latter has since narrowly defeated Faasel at Aintree, while a new opponent is the much improved Cooldine, who has won his last 5 races. Also of interest are the two German-breds Aitmatov, 6th at Cheltenham, and Catch Me, 6th in the Champion Hurdle and now trying this distance for the first time. The two mile novice chase at 16.40 should concern mainly Perce Rock (Tommy Stack/ Tony McCoy), who has won his last two and seems to have ironed out his jumping problems, and consistent Thyne Again (Liam Burke/ Davy Russell).

French racing today

there is no flat racing today in France; the two PMU meetings are Auteuil (N.H.) and Bordeaux (trotting). Most interesting race at Auteuil is the Prix du Vivarais, a hurdles race for 5yo´s and up over 3600 metres at 16.35. El Tango, twice winner of the German St. Leger, is now trained in France by Francois Doumen and has top jockey Christophe Pieux in the saddle. He was very tenderly handled on his jumping debut, and although he has to give weight to his 14 opponents today, should be able to outclass this opposition.

Evening racing at Kempton and Worcester

There is also U.K. racing this evening from Wocester (N.H.) and Kempton (all-weather). Worcester, which has been under water for most of the year, stages its first racing in ages and has an all-hurdles card, as the steeplechase track is still unraceable. The 2 miles novice hurdle at 20.05 CET is the most interesting event, with the unbeaten Prince Taime (Philip Hobbs/ Richard Johnson) and Quinte du Chatelet (David Pipe/ Tom Scudamore) up against the useful Matuhi (Ben de Haan/ Noel Fehily). Best race at Kemton is the class 3 7 furlongs handicap at 21.50. Top-weight Al Khaleej (Ed Dunlop/ Seb Sanders) is possibly a cut above this opposition, but may not find it easy to concede weight to the consistent all-weather specialists Count Ceprano (Mark Usher/ Richard Smith) and Resplendent Nova (Paul Howling/ Jamie Spencer)

Perth N.H. meeting

The 3 days meeting at Perth, which starts today, cannot be compared to the Punchestown Festival, but is still one of the most enjoyable Scottish meetings of the year. Nicky Henderson, also engaged in Ireland, has good chances of landing two races, the class 2 novices chase over 3 miles at 16.20 CET with ex-German Fleet Street, and the maiden hurdle at 18.40 with Prince du Beury, both partnered by Andrew Tinkler. The handicap hurdle at 16.55 looks very open; Orang Outan (James Wart/ Gary Berridge) won well recently after a year´s layoff and should again go close, as long as the boince factor does not kick in, in which case consistent Border Tale (Jimmy Moffatt/ Brian Hughes) seems a plausible alternative.

Nottingham and Catterick today

Flat racin this afternoon in the U.K. from Nottingham and Catterick and easily the better card at the former ciurse, with some very open races to make things tough for jackpot hunters. Even with only 4 runners, the main event, a class 3 conditions race for 3yo´s, is not that straightforwatrd, even though Jamie Spenser´s mount Curtain Call, having his first race for Lica Cumani, has a big advantage according to the ratings. Trained last year in nIreland, he is currently second favourite for the Derby and is a smart prospect, but has to dfeat two very easy last-time-out winners in Bold Choice (Michael Jarvis/ Philip Robinson) and Drill Sergeant (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning); true, they dd not have much to beat, but both looked very impressive. The handicaps all look very tricky. Puy d´Arnac (Alan Swinbank/ P.J.McDonald) is going for hat-trick in the opening 1 3/4 miles race at 15.20), but all-weather specialist Millville (Jarvis/ Robinson) is very leniently handicapped on turf and could be a big threat. Sir Michael Stoute´s Cabinet (Ryan Moore) is a lightlxy-raced 4yo, who is expected to go on to better things; he runs in the 10 furlongs race at 15.55, but may just be in need of the race, so Eradicate (Johnston/Fanning) could profit from his fitness advantage. Take note of that old campaigner Cape Royal (Kevin Ghunova) in the 5 furlongs handicap at 17.05, now that trainer Milton Harris seems to be coming back to form; he had his first winner for 8 months yesterday. At Catterick, the main feature is also a 4 horse 3yo race, this time over 1 1/2 miles. It looks to be a match between Mark Johnston´s Planetarium (Robert Winston), runner up to the smart Twice Over last November, and Ed Dunlop´s Mischief Making (Tom McLaughlin), who has now won twice on the all-weather and could be very dangerous in receipt of 11 lbs.

Punchestown festival - day two

The Punchestown festival continues today, when the main event is the Grade One Guinness Gold Cup, a steeplechase over 3 miles 1 furlong at 17.15 CET. This has attracted a strong field of 9 runners, headed by Cheltenham Gold Cup third Neptune Collonges (Paul Nicholls/ Ruby Walsh), who clearly has a great chance of repeating his 2007 victory here. Main danger could be Kicking King, who won this -and the Cheltenham Gold Cup - in 2005, but has been very lightly raced since owing to a series of problems. However his trainer Tom Taaffe reports him to be back in top form now, in which case he could play a leading role with Barry Geraghty in the saddle. Willie Mullins´ Snowy Morning (David Casey) had a hard race when third in the Grand National 18 days ago, and Michael Hourigan´s 3 runners must be respected. The best of them on current form is Mossbank (Davy Russell), but old Beef or Salmon (Timmy Murphy), who is running his last race before his well-deserve retirement, would be the most popular winner. The novice hurdle over 3 miles at 16.40 also has a good field, and Nicky Henderson´s Galient, unbeaten so far over hurdles, is obviously one to watch with Tony McCoy aboard, but this could be another winner for Ruby Walsh, who partners Willie Mullins´ much improved Shakervilz. Henderson and McCoy can also go close with easy Aintree winner Oedipe in the valuable 2 1/2 mile handicap chase at 17.50, while Silverhand (Paul Carberry) can continue Noel Meade´s good run in the 4yo hurdle at 16.05

German runners in France today

Flat racing this afternoon in France at Saint-Cloud and Lyon, with German runners at both meetings. At Lyon Dieter Fechner saddles Mosles (Franck Foresi) in a mile handicap for 3yo´s at 15.35 CET and Pegmalion (Íoritz Mendizibal) in a handicap for older horses over the same distance an hour later. At Saint-Cloud, Horst Steinmetz´ Nasibow (Dominique Boeuf) and Britta Fellermann´s Sagitario (Henk Grewe), who have already met in France this year, clash again in a conditions race over 2800 metres at 14.20. Regine Weismmeier saddles Download (Johan Victoire)in a mile race for 3yo´s at 14.50, while Peter Remmert´s Donna Gina (Maria Papke) runs in a ladies race over 2100 metres at 16.20; in the same event Kati Werning partners Satwa Duke for trainer Jean de Roualle. Possibly the best German bet of the day is Mario Hofer´s Famous (Boeuf) in the 1400 metres seller at 16.50, where ex-German Arrow with Christophe Soumillon in the saddle looks the main threat. There is also trotting this evening from Vincennes.

Evening racing at Bath and Towcester

There is racing this evening at Bath (flat) and Towcester (N.H.), but there is more quantity than quality at both tracks. At Towcester, Henry Daly´s Possol (Mark Bradburne) can finally get off the mark in Britain in the opening novice chase at 18.20 CET after being placed 7 times in succession, while the mares´ novice hurdle at 20.00 looks the best race on the card, with consistent Dancing Dasi (Vic Dartnall/ Jack Doyle), easy CD winner Kerriemuir Lass (Brendan Powell/ Dominic Elsworth) and 4yo Summer of Love (Alan King/ Robert Thornton) all holding claims. At Bath, Dunn´o (Clive Cox/ Seb Sanders), in the money all 3 starts last season, should win the 5 furlongs maiden at 18.40.

Folkestone, Kempton and Southwell

There is flat racing this afternoon in the U.K. at Folekstone, Kempton and Southwell, and for a change the best racing comes from Kempton, where the card is well aboe average for a midweek all-weather meeting. The best race on paper is the class 2 handicap over 1 1/2 miles at 16.35 CET, where top-weight Grane Caiman (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes), a smart and consistent all-weather performer, will take all the beating. However Andrew Balding´s Pinch of Salt (Martin Dwyer), also a CD specialist, could be a big threat off these weights. The class 4 handicap for 3yo´s over 11 furlongs at 16.00 looks the most iuntresting race, and many of today´s runners can be expected to make their mark in higher grades before long. Top-weights Greylami (Terry Mills/ Jimmy Fortune) and Boy on a Swing (Jamie Osborne/ Chris Catlin) have both won in good style this year, while the unbeaten pair House of Lords (Michael Bell/ Jamie Spencer) and Relative Strength (Andrew Balding/ Liam Keniry) could be anything. Best race at Folkestone is the 5 furlongs sprint handicap at 16.25. Logically Hereford Boy (DEan Ivory/ Robert Havlin) ought to win this, after failing by a head in a similar event last week at Windsor, but it would be no surprise if Corridor Creeper (Milton Bradley/ Alan Munro), behind him then, can get much closer today, while seasonal debutant For Life (John Long/ Natalia Gemelova) is the big question mark here, after winning 4 of his last 5 starts in 2007, all over 6 furlongs. At Southwell Kensington (David Evans/ Neil Callan), who has won 3 of his last 4 races, will start favourite for the class 4 handicap over 7 furlongs at 16.50, but top-weight Thunderous Applause (Alan McCabe/ Neil Pollard) could be a big danger.

Punchestown festival - day one

Ireland´s most important N.H. meeting, the Punchestown festival. starts today and continues through Saturday with 5 days of top class jumps racing. Today´s card features 3 Grade One races, the Champion Novice Hurdle over 2 miles at 16.05 CET, the Kerrygold Champion Chase over 2 miles at 16.40 and the Champion Novice Chase over 3 miles 1 furlong at 17.50. The Kerrygold field inclues several horses that ran in the Chamion Chase at Cheltenham las month, including front-runner Fair Along (3rd), Schindlers Hunt (4th), Newmill (5th), the 2006 winner here, and Twist Magic (6th). Despite that result, it is quite likely that Twist Magic, representing the powerful Paul Nicholls/ Ruby Walsh combination, can come out on top here. Last year´s winner Mansony is another possible in a fascinating race. Ruby Walsh partners Cheltenham winner Fiveforthree for Willie Mullins in the novice hurdle, but he may not be suited by today´s shorter trip. Noel Meade´s Jered, an easy winner winner last time out from Made in Taipan, whom he meets on the same terms, looks more likely, though it will be no surprise if Jessica Harrington´s Cork All Star comes back to form after some disappointing performances. Mullins and Walsh team up again with Pomme Tiepy in the novice chase; the French-bred mare won four times running before falling at Cheltenham and can make amends here, although the German-bred Air Force One, fifth in that Cheltenham race, could prove dangerous. A son of Lando, he will be suited by the better ground today.

Evening racing at Sedgefield and Windsor

Windsor begins its regular Monday evening fixture today, which contnues throughout the late spring and summer with hardly a break until mid-August. There are quite likely some useful 3yo´s in the mile handicap at 19.25 CET. Top-weight Internationaldebut (Steve Parr/ John Egan) ran in some top races last year, and has begun 2008 with two third places over 10 furlongs; this trip is probably better, but he will find it tough to concede the weight to some lightly-raced types from big stables, such as Sir Michael Stoute´s Adversity (Ryan Moore), Jeremy Noseda´s The Which Dactor (Tom Queally) or Gerard Butler´s Sundowner (Jamie Spenser), all of whom look capable of considerable improvement. However Adversity fares, Stoute and Moore can take the 10 furlongs maiden at 20.25 with French Riviera, who is regarded as a smart prospect. At Sedgefield´s evening N.H. card, ex-German Schelm (Ronald O´Leary/ Tom O´Brien) can take the opening novice hurdle at 18.40 after winning in smoorth style on his hurdles debut, while a double penalty should not prevent Howard Johnson´s Wee Forbees (Wilson Renwick) from outclassing his 4 opponents in the novice chase an hour later and remaining unbeaten at this track.

N.H. racing at Hexham and Plumpton

The going is heavy today at Hexham, in the far north of England, but is much faster at Plumpton in the south. At Hexham, German-bred Tacinja (Paul Blockley/ Mark Bradburne), just touched off last time out, should go close in the opening novices handicap chase at 15.30 CET. Donald McCain and Jason Maguire can team up to land a double here with Classic Chic in the novice hurdle at 16.00 and Rosie all Over in the mares handicap hurdle an hour later; both must give weight away all round but should be up to the task. At Plumpton, Swordsman is an interesting runner in the opening novice hurdle at 15.20; he has been in several different stable during his career, including Christan von der Recke´s, but is now trained by Harry Dunlop and has the assistance of Tony McCoyn in the saddle. Haddaaf (Charölie Mann/ Noel Fehily), who has an excellent pedigree, should outclass the opposition in the maiden hurdle at 15.50 after his recent excellent comeback at Kempton. The interesting runner in the 2 1/2 mile handicap chase at 16.50 is Explosive Fox, whose trainer Sean Curran scored a sensational success in Saturday´s Scottish Grand National. Here he rides his horse as well, and must have good prospects in an open event.

Races in Pontefract

The only flat racing in the U.K. this afternoon is at Pontefract, where the main event is a very tricky 6 furlongs handicap at 16.10 CET. 16 runners, quote a few of whom have already met, with varying results; several ran in last September´s Ayr Gold Cup without making much impression in that very hot event. On last season´s form, Genki (Roger Charlton/ Steve Drowne) is entitled to start favourite, he has first or second all of his 8 starts on turf. He is expected to go on to better things, but could be at a disadvantage today on his seasonal debut. Zomerlust (John Quinn/ Graham Gibbons) and Damika (Richard Whitaker/ Michael Stainton) have already run this year and can therefore be slightly preferred, but there are are plenty of possibilities in a very open race

Auteuil today

N.H. racing is in the spotlight in France today, with the valuable Prix du President de la Republique at 14.45 CET the main feature of a good card at Auteuil. Regarded as the French equivalent of the Grand National- though over a much shorter distance- this is a handicap chase over 4700 metres. With 20 runners it is very open; Francois Marie Cottin saddles three, with Philip Carberry on the consistent Peldero in the black and orange Seneschal colours. Main supporting event is the listed Prix Jean Grenel at 16.50, a hurdle race over 3900 metres, in which German challenger Atamane (Mario Hofer/ Xavier Hondier) should be good enough to finish in the money.

Irish racing today

There is N.H. racing today at Cork, with the usual huge fields, but the main interes will be centred on the flat racing at Leopardstown, featuring the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes, an important Derby trial at 17.05 CET. Aidan O´Brien saddles 3 of the 7 runners, with stable jockey Johnny Murtagh riding Alessandro Volta, who must be regarded as the stable´s number one. On 2yo form he is held by Kevin Prendergast´s Moiqen (Declan McDonough), but this could easily be changed around today; however Dermot Weld´s Unwritten Rule (Pat Smullen), a narrow winner this CD a fortnight ago, could be the winner this time. Weld and Smullen could also team up to win the listed race over a mile at 16.35 with ex-French Tian Shan, where David Wachman´s Followmyfootsteps (Johnny Murtagh) looks the main threat. At Cork the focus will be on jockeys Davy Russell (making his comeback from injury) and Ruby Walsh, fighting it out for the Irish N.H. jockeys championship. Both have some promising rides, and the day may end up even for them.

N.H. racing at Stratford and Wincanton

Both today´s N.H. meetings at Stratford and Wincanton have some large fields with competitive racing, but the best bet of the day should be Andrew Balding´s Albinus (Darren O´Dwyer), likely to start at a very short price in Wincanton´s novice hurdle over 2 miles at 15.50 CET. Last time out he fnished third in the Imperial Cup at Sandown, form which is far better than anything his 16 opponents today have ever achieved. An interesting long-shot at the meeting is German-bred Absolut Power (Jonathan Geake/Daryl Jacob), who has been below form this season but has now dropped to a very favourable weight in the novices handicap chase at 17.30. At Stratford, top-weight Lord Ryeford (Tom George/ Noel Fehily), who fnished a respetable 10th of 20 in a much hotter race at Cheltenham, can take the handicap chase at ^16.40, although Down the Stretch (J.R.Payne/ Liam Treadwell), an easy winner a week ago at Newton Abbot, looks dangerous. Felinious (Jonjo O´Neill/ Tony McCoy) is an ineresring runner in thr mares handcap hurdle at 17.10. She won 4 successive races last summer, but has not been out since. With the stable still very quiet, preference is for Iron Maid (Oliver Sherwood/ Dominic Elsworth) and the lightly-weighted Diavoleria (Mick Easterby/ Brian Hughes)

Great Leighs finally opens!

After numerous delays, the new all-weather racecourse at Great Leighs in Essex finally opens its doors today, the first new track in the U.K. since Taunton (1927). The public will not be allowed in today, with attendance restricted to professionals, the media and invited guests, but it is hoped that there will be enough bookmakers (a minimum of 3 is required) to return starting prices. Many of the leading trainers and jockeys - including champions Jamie Spencer and Seb Sanders - will be in action to give the track a good start. There are small fields for the two featured events, a 2 mile handicap at 16.15 CET and a 10 furloongs handicap at 17.20, but that may be no disadvantage. The former event sees super-consistent Calculating (Mark Usher/ Hayley Turner) renew rivalry with Buster Hyvonen (James Fanshawe/ Jamie Spencer), but top-weight Velvet Heights (John Dunlop/ Seb Sanders) can possibly outtrump them both. The 10 furlongs race should concern mainly Rayhani (Marcis Tregoning/ Martin Dwyer) and bottom weight Escape Route (John Gosden/ Jimmy Fortune), but Mark Johnston´s Luberon (Joe Fanning), very unreliable last year, could be dangerous if in the right mood.

Saturday, April 19, 2008

Ireland today

There is N.H. racing today at Cork (5 hurdles races with huge fields and one bumper) as well as flat racing from Naas. Easily the most interesting event is the 5 furlongs listed race at 17.10 at Naas. Two strong British raiders, Reverence (Eric Alston/ Jimmy Quinn) and Tax Free (David and Adrian Nicholls) are opposed by 8 locals, the best of whom could be Snaefell (Mike Halford/ Johnny Murtagh) and John Oxx´ 3yo Age of Chivalry (Mick Kinane)

Three Group races at Newbury

The flat season is getting into top gear now, and today´s Newbury card features three Group races, the John Porter Stakes over 1 1/2 miles for older horses ar 15.15 CET and two classic trials over 7 furlongs. The John Porter Stas is traditionally the first race of the season for the top middle distance performers, but although today´s renewal has 15 runners it is rather sub-standard in terms of quality. Henry Cecil has his string in good form, and his pair Tempelstern (Tom Queally) and Tranquil Tiger (Ted Durcan) must be respected, while Michael Bell´sRegime (Jamie Spencer) is aothedr oe for thr short list. Ricjard Hannon´s Malt or Mash (Richard Hughes) is on an upward cure and has won his last 3 races, but will not run if the ground is too soft (rain is forecast). The most popular winner would be Rod Millman´s Sergeant Cecil (Darryll Holland), for whom the trip is on the short side; however he has twice fnished fourth here, so a good placing is quite possible. The two classic trials look very open; the fillies´ race at 16.25 feaures John Dunlo´s unbeaten Muthabara (Richard Hills), who has been heavily backied for the 1,000 Guneas, but Mick Channon´s Nahoodh (Richard Hughes), whose trainer has won this 3 times in the last 6 years, has a higher rating. Sir Michael Stoute´s Confront (Ryan Moore) is the likely favourite for the colts´ race at 17.00, but the stable is not yet in top form, and James Fansgawe´s Sir Gerry (Jamie Spencer) may come out the better today. The mile handicap at 15.50 has 18 runners and anything is possible, but top-weight Mine (Jamie Bethell/ Darryll Holland) is a specialist for these straight mile races and could spring a surprise at a nice price.

Scottish Grand National at Ayr

The biggest N.H. meeting of the year in Scotland takrs place today at Ayr, where the main features are the Scottish Grand National, a very valuable 4 miles handicap at 16.40 CET and the Scottish Champion Hurdle, which despite its name is also a handicap, over 2 miles at 16.00. In both cases there are huge fields and the presence of smart performers at the top of the weights has resulted in the vast majority of runners being out of the handicap. In theory this should it make it easier to find the winners, but that is not necessarily the case. In the Grand National, the weights are headed by the smart Halcon Genelardais (Alan King/ Robert Thornton) and the ultra-tough Mike de Beauchene (Sue Alner/ Robert Walford) who defeated the former narowly in the Welsh Grand National and is now 5 lbs worse off. The only other runner racing off his proper weight is Paul Nicholls´ Opera Mundi (Ruby Walsh), but all three of these would probably prefer softer ground than is likely today. Old Benny (Alan King/ Richard Johnson) and Noir et Vert (Ferdy Murphy/ Colin Gillies) look the best of those racing out of the handicap, but course specialist Wild Cane Ridge (Len Lungo/ Wilson Renwick) must also be respected at his favourite track. In the Champion Hurdle, it is David Pipe´s Lough Derg (Tom Scudamore) who has top weight, but he is racing for the huge bonus of winning the Order of Merit (he has to finish in the first 4 to take the bonus) and realistically this looks unlikely, as he is a real stayer and this trip looks much too short. Pearl King (Philip Hobbs/ Tony McCoy) has been raised 16 lbs for an easy win at Aintree a fortnight ago, while Penzance (King/ Thornton) must also be given a chance, in view of his stable´s excellent record in the top hurdle races. Of those out of the handicap Paul Nicholls´ Takeroc (Ruby Walsh), who has been running well over fences, looks very dangerous off his lenient hurdles rating, while Kalahari King (Ferdy Murphy/ Brian Hughes) ran a great race at Cheltenham and is a threat to all. Best bet on the card is Noland (Paul Nicholls/ Ruby Walsh), beaten favourite when third in the Arkle at Cheltenham and facing much weaker opposition in the grandly-named Future Champions Novice Chase at 15.50

French racing today

There is French racing this afternoon from Maisons-Laffitte (8 flat races) and Chateaubriant (6 flat races, 2 over jumps) and this eveningfrom Vincennes (trotting). Most interesting race is the 1100 metres sprint for 3yos at 15.50 CET at Maisons-Faffitte, in which German interests will be represented by Andreas Wöhler´s Ceodora, who won on her debut last August at Hannover before finishing fourth in the Kronimus-Rennen and then running-up to the smart Overdose in Austria. Another German-bred, Avanguardia (Yves de Nicolay/ Christophe Soumillon),bred by Gestüt Katlshof, could be the main danger.

Busy day in France

It will be a busy day for German racegoers in France, as there are German-trained runners both in the main meeting at Longchamp as well as the provincial meeting at Argentan, where there is an early start, with the first race at 12.35 CET. At the latter track, Ralf Rohne is represented by Oratella (Tony Piccione) and Sky of Star (Frederic Spanu), who run in 1950 metres sellers at 13.35 and 15.05 respectively. The German runners at Longchamp are better class but also face much tougher opposition. Grazilla (Andreas Trybuhl/ Jerome Lermyte) runs in the opening tiercé handicap at 13.50. Andreas Löwe´s Sehrezad (Andreas Suborics) and Michael TrYbuhl´s Lone Star (William Mongil) both go for the 3yo race over a mile at 14.20. Vitelli (Ralf Rohne/ Christophe Soumillon), Licato (Dr. Andreas Bolte/ Dominique Boeuf) and Gynolina (Andreas Trybuhl/ Mongi) all run in the 2700 metres seller at 1.20. Dr. Bolte has also entered Lagatera (Julien Augé) in thr 3yo seller at 16.50, while Paarl (Werner Baltromei/ Dominique Boeuf) and West Pacific (Ralf Rohne/ Johan Victoire) go for the 2000 metres handicap at 17.20. There is also trotting from Enghien with a late start at 16.35.

Craven Stakes at Newmarket

Another strong card at Newmaret, where the main event is the Group Three Craven Stakes for 3yo´s over a mile at 16.45 CET, one of the most significant trials for the 2000 Guineas over this CD early next month. After his sensational start to the season, with 4 winners from 4 runners here yesterday, John Gosden is clearly the trainer in form and his Raven´s Pass (Jimmy Fortune) kooks likely to start a raging hot favourite, even though the trainer himself has tried to dampen enthusiasm by stating that his colt is very fresh and will need the race. His impressive Sandown win last September and his third place here in the Dewhurst (on unsuitably soft going) are easily the two best peices of form in the race and it will be a surprise if he is beaten, despite the trainer´s misgivings. The one to chase him home is Henry Cecil´s Twice Over (Ted Durcan), who won both his starts last year, both at this track, and has no stamina problems, having won over 10 furlongs. The same two teams, Gosden/ Fortune and Cecil/ Durcan, can dominate the Group Three Earl of Sefton Stakes over 9 furlongs for older horses with Pipedreamer ad Multidimensional respectively. Both have won 4 of their 6 career starts, but while the former´s best performance came in winning the Cambridgeshire last October over this CD, Multidimensional has good group form to his credit and should be preferred. The listed Abernant Stakes over 6 furlongs has attracted 20 runners; Aahayson (Karl Burke/ Fergus Sweeney) won nicely at Doncaster but had the run of the race from his stands draw and may not be able to confirm the form with Prime Defender (Barry and Michel Hills) and Sonny Red (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes) but the one to beat could be Andrew Balding´s Dark Missile (William Buick) in receipt of all the allowances.

Kempton and Dundalk

There are two meetings on the all-weather this evening, at Dundalk in Ireland and Kempton. The Irish track has the better card, and John Oxx can take the 3yo maiden at 20.40 CET with the promising Hanoverian Baron (Mick Kinane), while the 1 1/2 miles maiden for older horses at 22.40 should go to Megans Joy, a smart hurdler having her first run on the flat. Best bet of the day is Kevin Prendergast´s Dimenticata (Chris Hayes) in the fillies mile race at 21.40; a repetition of the form showed when dividing Finsceal Beo and Peeping Fawn in last year´s Irtish 1000 Guineas would make her unbeatable here, although she was disappointing a couple of times afterwards. The most valuable race on the card is the 3yo handicap at 21.10. This looks tricky, and 4 of the 8 runners have already won at the track this year. Possibly Ready to Rocknroll (Jom Gorman/ Fran Berry), runner-p a the Curragh last time, can now go one better. At Kempton, the best race is the class 4 handicap over 6 furlongs at 21.50. Holbeck Ghyll (Andrew Balding/ William Buick) won here in good style last time out, but that was over 5 furlons, and over today´s trip top-weight Valery Borzov (David Nicholls/ Jamie Spencer), sporting a first-time visor, looks a big danger. Today´s Irish N.H. meeting at Tipperary has been abandoned, as the track is unraceable.

Cheltenham and Ripon

Cheltenham´s April meeting continues today, when the main feature is the listed mares handicap hurdle over 2 miles 5 furlongs at 16.30 CET. 14 runners and a very open race, with in-form Jaunty Flight (Oliver Sherwood/ Ollie Greenall) facing a stiff task under top weight. Consistent Blaeberry (Emma Lavelle/ Timmy Murphy), One Gulp (Paul Webber/ Dominic Elsworth) and Gaspara (David Pipe/ Tom Scudamore) are three for the short list here. The class 2 handicap hurdle at 17.05 over 3 miles should concern mainly Hopkins (Henry Daly/ Dominic Elsworth), winner of his last 2 races and stepping up in trip, and Theatre Dance (David Arbuthnot/ Seamus Durack), making his handicap debut. The meeting opens with a good race for a class 2 novice hurdle at 15.20, in which Group Captain (Alan King/ Chrstian Williams), Im singing the blues (Paul Nicholls/ Sam Thomas) and Chantaco (Nicky Henderson/ Tony McCoy) all hold chances. At Ripon, the best race is the class 3 Ripon Silver Bowl over 10 furlings at 16.20. Spice Route (Michael Bell/ Jim Crowley), Championship Point (Mick Cannon/ Darryll Holland) and Charlie Tokyo (Richard Fahey/ Paul Hanagan) are the three to concentrate on here. The 3yo handicap over a mile at 16.55 could also go to the Fahey/ Hanaan team with Albaqaa, who seems very well treated after his easy Redcar win last month, but Mark Johnson´s 3yo´s are in great form and his Robby Bobby (Robert Winston) deserves the utmost respect.

Beverley and Wolverhampton

The day´s other meetings, at Beverley this afternoon and on the all-weather at Wolverhampton this evening, are of much lower standard. Beverley, racing for the first time in 2008, features a 5 furlong sprint handicap at 16.20 CET as its main event. As always, punters should pay attention to the effects of the draw here, but generally horses with a low number are at a severe disadvantage. Fire up the Band (David Nicholls/ Silvestre de Sousa) has won both his 2008 starrs, but they were modest all-weather claimers and this is much tougher. Caribbean Coral (John Quinn/ Graham Gibbons) ran well at Musselburth recently, with Melalchrist (Kevin Ryan/ Paul Mulrennan) well behind, but the latter is a CD specialist with a good draw and must be given another chance. Mark Johznston´s William Blake (Robert Winston) is unbeaen so far and can take the 3yo 10 furlongs handicap at 17,30 on his first start on turf. At Wolverhampton, the best race is the class 4 handicap over 7 furloongs at 21.50; Divertimenti (Charles Dore/ Robert Winston) was an easy winer recently over this CD from Count Ceprano (Mark Usher/ Richard Smith) but the latter is now 5 lbs better off and could reverse the form this time.

N.H. racing at Cheltenham

There is a good card for today´s N.H. fixture at Cheltenham and some highly competitive races can be expected. Main evet is the Mears Group Silver Trophy, a Grade Two race over 2 miles 5 furlongs at 17.05 CET. Irish challenger Glenfinn Captain (Tom Taaffe/ Tony McCoy) has obvious claims, as does David Pipe´s Abragante (Timmy Murphy), but Paul Nicholls´ Ofarel d´Airy (Ruby Walsh) could be the fly in the ointment. Although his vrecent form has been puzzling, it should not be forgotten that he was a CD winner at this meeting last year. It could be another good day for the Nicholls/ Walsh team, as Le Duc in the 3 miles 1 furlong handivap chase at 15.55, Earth Planet in the handicap hurdle over 2 1/2 miles at 16.30 and Petit Lord in the novice chase at 17.40 also have good chances. However the first two races are wide open, while on the book Petit Lord, who has won his last 4 races but is taking a strong rise in class here, has to improve to defeat Joe Lively (Joe and Colin Tizzard), who has been running in top company and is clear best here on ratings.

They´re off at Newmarket!

For serious fans of flat racing, the season starts today with the first Newmarket meeting of 2008. The Craven meeting, now only 2 days instead of 3 as previously, is especially notable for its classic trials. Indeed 6 of today´s 7 races are restricted to 3yo´s, while the other is a race for 2yo´s. Most important event is the Group Three Nell Gwyn Stakes over 7 furlongs for 3yo fillies at 16.45 CET, an important trial for the 1,000 Guineas. John Gosden´s Infallible (Jimmy Fortune) looks the one to beat here; she won her only start last year over this CD, and although this is quite a step up in class, she created a very favourable impression and is prominent in the betting for the 1,000 Guineas.

Nijoom Dubai (Mick Channon/ Darryll Holland), not seen out since winning at 50-1 at Royal Ascot, and Spinning Lucy (Barry and Michael Hills), who won a listed race here in November, could be the main dangers. The grandly-named European Free Handicap over 7 furlongs at 16.10 used to be a good guide to the 2,000 Guineas, but that is no longer the case and today´s field looks sub-standard. Peter Chapple-Hyam sets a puzzle by saddling 3 runners all with top jockeys - top-weight Spirit of Sharjah (Johnny Murtagh), Fat Boy (Frankie Dettori) and Brave Prospector (Jimmy Fortune). Howeve the two to concentrate on could be the lightly-raced pair Stimulation Hughie Morrison/ Steve Drowne) and Exclamation (Brian Meehan/ Jamie Spencer). The Feilden Stakes over 9 furlongs at 17.20 could be more of a Derby trial, and two likely classic candidates are in the field - Gestüt Ammerland´s Kandahar Run (Henry Cecil/ Ted Durcan) and Aidan O´Brien´s Poet (Johnny Murtagh), already a winner this season. It is also quite possible that the maiden races will throw up some smart performers, but with so many unknown factors today is a day for watching rathe than punting.

France today

Once again there is no flat racing in France today, with today´s PMU meetings being Auteuil (N.H.) and Pontchateau (trotting). There are no outstanding races on today´s cards but we certainly wish our old friend William Mongil better luck than yesterday, when he fell on his only ride. Today he rides Dernier Bateau at 14.35 CET at Auteuil and Pilote d´Ouxy at 17.05, both for trainer F.M. Cottin

France today

There is no flat racing in France today; the 3 PMU meetings come from Enghien (N.H.) and Cavaillon (trotting) in the afternoon and Vincennes (trotting) in the evening. The best card is at Enghien, where there are 2 listed races both worth more than 40,000 euros to the winner: a hurdles race for older horses over 3800 metres at 14.50 CET and a steeplechase for 4yo´s over the same distance an hour later, in which F.M. Cottin´s Oculi (Dean Gallagher) will probably start a hot favourite. In between there is a selling hurdle for 3yo fillies over 3300 metres, in which Cottin´s La Belle Rousse has a chance; she will be ridden by William Mongil, better known as a flat jockey

N.H. racing at Exeter and Limerick

Today´s jumps racing comes from Exeter, where the going is good, and the Irish track of Limerick, where the ground will be soft, and there are large fields at both tracks. German-bred Donatessa (Charlie Mann/ Noel Fehily) was a big disappointment last time out, but appeals as an interesting each-way longshot for the novices handicap hurdle that opens proceedings at 15.10 CET at Exeter. Rawdon (Michael Bell/ Tony McCoy) and CD winner Dovedale (Jeremy Scott/ James White) are the likely favourites here. The two main races at Exeter both demand plenty of stamina. The marathon handicap chase over 3 3/4 miles at 16.10 looks very open; Yann´s (Richard Philipps/ Richard Johnson), Potts of Magic (Richard Lee/ Timmy Murphy) and Mister Apples (Ian Williams/ Jason Maguire) are all consistent performers at this level and should be on the short list. The 3 mile handicap hurdle half an hour later can go to Venetia Williams´ Never so Blue (Sam Thomas), who is having his first race over the sticks for some time. He won 4 successive chases during the winter, but has fallen the last twice; he can get back on the winning track over the smaller obstacles today, as the opposition does not look that strong. Trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Ruby Walsh, who have been mopping up in Ireland in recent weeks, can keep up the good work at Limerick´s evening meeting. Equus Maximus, in the maiden hurdle at 18.55, Ballytrim at 19.25 and Emma Jane in the mares beginners chase an hour later all appear to hold winning chances.

Warwick and Nottingham

Flat racing today at Warwick and Nottingham, with the going soft at both tracks. The best race of the day is the class 3 conditions race over 7 furlongs at 17.00 CET at Warwick. Only 5 runners, but all of them classy performers, headed by Welsh Emperor (Tom Tate / Micky Fenton), who finished runner-up to Toylsome in the Prix de la Foert (Group One) last October. He has to give 8lbs to all his 4 opponents today but should be up to this task. Caldra (Sylvester Kirk/ Richard Hughes) looks the main danger; he was slightly below form last year, but was a smart 2yo in 2006, winniung 4 races, including a Group Three. Andrew Balding´s oldtimer Vanderlin (William Buick) and smart handicapper Dabbers Ridge (Barry and Michael Hills) are not out of it either. The following class 4 handicap over 10 furlongs can go to Moheebb (Mrs. Carr/ Andrew Mullen), 2nd of 16 at Newcastle 10 days ago. Trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam and jockey Alan Munro look the team to follow at Nottingham today. They can take the two divisions of the 3yo maiden over a mile with Azeer (not seen out since finishing a close 8th at Royal Ascot) at 16.20 and Glorious Gift (in the frame all 3 starts so far) at 16.50, and Jaser, who looks a good thing to win the mile handicap at 17.20 after his easy win over this CD 13 days ago, for which he has been raised 8 lbs.

Inspection at Plumpton

A very quiet Monday which may possiby get quieter still if the N.H. meeting at Plumpton is abandoned following heavy snow yesterday. An inspection will be held later this morning. If racing goes ahead, Alan King´s Sir Harry Ormesher (Robert Thornton) looks almost unbeatable in the novice hurdle at 15.50. He has to give lots of weight to his three opponents, but is basically different class. There is also N.H. racing at Kelso and all-weather flat racing at Kempton. At the latter meeting, Geoff Wragg´s St. Jean Cap Ferrat (Ryan Moore), runner-up over this trip at Pontefract recently, should take the 10 furlongs maiden race at 15.40 on his all-weather debut. Paul Cole´s Title Role (Tolley Dean) looks the main threat. At Kelso, Julie Camacho´s Canny Bay (Keith Mercer), a good third of 16 at Newcastle 3 weeks ago can take the opening novice hurdle at 15.30. An interesting newcomer here is Midas (Nicky Richards/ Rose Davidson); however he fares, his connections should win the class 4 novice chase half an hour later with the lightly-raced but highly-rated The Whisperer.

Group Two races at Longchamp

Longcamp stages the first two Group Two races of the European season today, the Prix Noailles for 3yo´s over 2100 metres at 16.20 CET and the Prix d´Harcourt for older horses over 2000 metres half an hour later. Strictly on rating, the former event should go to Criquette Head-Maarek´s Full of Gold (Thierry Gillet), owned by the trainer´s father, who was an easy winner of the Criterium de Saint-Cloud last autumn. He may have a slight fitness disadvantage here, as his 5 opponents have already run this year, but his superior class may pull him through. In the Harcourt, Andre Fabre saddles two ex-German horses, Gestüt Röttgen´s Aspectus (Johan Victoire) and Baron Ullmann´s Persian Storm (Stephane Pasquier), but both may struggle on the heavy ground. The one to beat here is clearly Spirit One (Philippe Demercastel/ Christophe Soumillon), an easy Group Three winner at Saint-
Cloud 3 weeks ago (Aspectus a well-beaten third). Other runners with German connections on the best card of the season so far are Baron Ullmann´s Soum (Fabre/ Olivier Peslier), who runs in the oening race for 3yo debutants over 2000 metres at 14.10 and Mario Hofer´s Kaliyan (Victoire) in the 3100 metres handicap at 14.35.

3 N.H. meetings in the U.K., one in Ireland

After the excitements of Aintree, the jumps racing today at Hexham, Market Rasen and Southwell, as well as Limerick in ireland, is very modest by comparison. Some decent novices turn out for the Grade 2 race at 17.35 at the Irish track. This is quite an open race, most all of the 8 runners having similar ability. Callherwhatulike, Candy Girl and Wheresben are possibly the 3 strongest candidates. At Market Rasen, ex-German Air Force One (Charlie Mann/ Noel Fehily) looks a certainty to win the novice chase over 3 miles 1 furlong; another ex-German horse, Karl Burke´s Gardasee is entered here, but is more likely to run in a similar event over 2 1/2 miles at 16.10 at Southwell (staging one of its rare N.H. meetings). However he looks booked for third place there, behind Oslot (Paul Nicholls/ Sam Thomas) and Possol (Henry Daly/ Mark Bradburne). Best race at Hexham is the class 3 handicap hurdle over 2 1/2 miles at 16.30. Topaz Lady (Nicky Richards/ Fearghal Davis) has obvious chances following his very easy win here 3 weeks ago. On the same card the consistent Bollin Ruth (Donald and Gary Whillans) was beaten a short head over a shorter trip and looks the main danger.

classic trials at Leopardstown

With the Grand National meeting over, attention now switches to the flat. Although there are three N.H. meetings in the U.K. today and one in Ireland, by far the best races are run on the flat at Lepardstown, where two classic trials hold centre sage, for fillies at 16.15 CET and for colts at 17.15, both Group Three races over 7 furlongs. In the former event it should not really be necessary to look beyond Jim Bolger´s Saoirse Abu (Kevin Manning), winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes Group One) on very soft ground last year. Main opposition is likely to come from the two Aidan O´Brien runners Halfway to Heaven (Seamus Heffernan) and Psalm (Johnny Murtagh). In the colts´ race, O´Brien saddles three of the five runners, with Murtagh riding Greek Mythology, who looks the stable´s best hope; however he may have to give best to Dermot Weld´s Famous Name (Pat Smullen), who looks a smart prospect.

Grand National!

There are 6 meetings in Britain and Ireland today, but attention will be concentrated on just one of them, and one race in particular, the John Smith´s Grand National, to be run at 17.15 CET this afternoon at Aintree. As usual 40 runners will go to post, with probably less than half of them completing (although the ground is forecast to be perfect) andf the winner collecting 450,000 pounds, which makes it the biggest prize in N.H. racing.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is more prestigious, but this is the race that captures the public imagination. As a handicap, it is wide open, although the weightsare relatively compressed these days and the overall standard of the field much higher than in the days of Red Rum. However he remains the standard by which all Grand Natuonal winners are measured, and there is no doubt that the most popular winner would be the favourite Cloudy Lane (Jason Maguire), trained by Donald McCain jr, son of the legendary Ginger, who trained Red Rum. Cloudy Lane has done nothing wrong, indeed he is "well in" at the weights by some 20 lbs, having showed much improved form since the weights were published. Theoretically he has a great chance, but the history of the race shows that results do not often follow logic. He runs in the colours of Trevor Hemmings, who also has 2005 winner Hedgehunter (Willie Mullins/ Ruby Walsh) to represent him. Hedgehunter, as a CD specialist must be highly respected, though top weights do not have a great record.

Mullins also saddles Snowy Mountain (David Casey), who finished behind Hedgehunter last time, but has a chance on earlier form. However it could be that the best Irish hope is Slim Pickings (Tom Taaffe/ Barry Geraghty), who finished third last year after leading for a long way. His jockey incidentally is one of 3 who must pass thecourse doctor after heavy falls here yesterday, the others being Mick Fitzgerald and Tony Dobbin. Ginger McCain´s record of 4 National wins is equalled by the late Fred Rimell, and there will be plenty of support for Simon (John Spearing/ Dominic Elsworth), owned by his widow. Others for the short list include Comply or Die (David Pipe/ Timmy Murphy) and Chelsea House (Tom Mullins/ Davy Russell), but as always there are at least 20 possible winners and luck in running will play the most important role.

Our choice:

Cloudy Lane - Comply Or Die - Snowy Morning

German runners at Nancy

Racing in France today comes from Nancy (flat) and Vincennes (trotting). With the Lorraine capital in easy reach of the German border, there are no fewer than 15 German-trained runners at Nancy today. 7 of them contest the same race over 2400 metres at 16.00 CET: Sagitario (Britta Fellermann/ Henk Grewe), Wellinas (Werner Hefter/ Maxime Guyon), Nasibow (Horst Steinmetz/Dominique Boeuf), Spectra (Miroslav Rulec/ Andreas Suborics), Albarello (Werner Hefter/ Jean-Pierre Carvalho), Montirat (Horst Steinmetz/ Davy Bonilla) and Proncess Petra (Miroslav Rulec/ Alxi Badel). Another 5 line up in the 1950 metres handicap at 17.30: Fancy Running (Andreas Trybuhl/ Subi), Gonezoon (Sascha Smcrzek/ Grewe), Colombe d´Or (Hefter/ Carvalho), Zolinas (Wolfgang Gülcher/ Eric Wehrel) and Londra (Smcrzek/ David Breux). The other German runners are Ebulolo (Dr. Bolte/ Boeuf) in the opening 1950 metres racefor 3yo´s, Pracani (Smcrzek/ Breux) and Standby Dancer (Dr. Bolte/ Carvalho) in the 2400 metres seller at 15.30, and Manfred Weber´s chaser Allez Hopp (Philippe Suard) over 4200 metres at 15.00.
Several of these have chances, our vote for the most likely German winner goes to the veteran Standby Dancer.

Master Minded the star at Aintree

After yesterday´s shock defeat of Kauto Star on Aintree´s opening day, it is up to stable-companion Master Minded (Paul Nicholls/ Ruby Walsh) to restore the stable´s honour in the Melling Chase (Grade One) over 2 1/2 miles at 16.10 this afternon. His performance in defeating Voy por Ustedes 19 lengths in Cheltenha´s Champion Chase was the best seen in a British or Irish jumps race for many years.

That was over 2 miles, but there seems no reason to doubt that he will be troubled by the extra difference. Voy por Ustedes (Alan King/ Robert Thornton) tries again and might get closer, while Tamarinbleu (David Pipe/ Tom Scudamore), well below form at Cheltenham, should also fare better, especially if he is gven an easy lead. However defeat for Master Minded today would be the shock of the season. The other Grade One race at Aintree today is the novice hurdle over 3 miles at 15.35, in which the muc h improved Tazbar (Keith Reveley/Phil Kinsella) will start a clear favourite. He is facing much tougher opposition this time, but the style of his last 3 wins suggests that he is well up to this task.

Nenuphar Collonges (Alan King/ Robert Thornton) won at Cheltenham, with 4 of thse behind, including The Tother One (Nicholls/ Walsh) in third and Gone to Lunch (Scott/ McCoy) fifth, while Peter Bowen´s Souffleur (Tom O´Brien) ran a good race on the flat recently but before that finished 60 lengths behind Tazbar at Haydock.

Our choice:
1. Race: Albertas Run - Big Buck`s - Roll Along
2. Race: Tazbar - Nenuphar Collonges - The Tother One
3. Race: Master Minded - Monet`s Garden - Voy Por Ustedes
4. Race: Natal - Nacarat - Randwick Roar
5. Race: Captain Cee Bee - Songe - Pierrot Lunaire
6. Race: Kings Euro - State Of Play - Mister Top Notch
7. Race: Sallie`s Secret - Cait Ni Chaonaigh - Carole`s Legacy

Aintree Grand National meeting, day one

The Aintree Grand National meeting has been greatly improved in recent years and now poses a serious threat to Cheltenham as the top N.H. meeting of the year. While it used to be a one race meeting only, now the three days include a host of top events that are major features in their own right.

Obviously the Cheltenham N.H. festival three weeks ago provides the main form lines, as many of the stars of that fixture line up again, including today Gold Cup runner-up Kauto Star, World Hurdle winner Inglis Drever and the first two from the Triumph Hurdle, Celestial Halo and Franchoek (although running today in different races). Punters should be warned however that Cheltenham form does not always work out at Aintree; the track here is flat and relatively easy, while the configuration of Cheltenham - and especially the uphill finish- demands different qualities.

Our choice:
1. Race: Kicks For Free - Inglis Drever - Lough Derg
2. Race: Kauto Star - Exotic Dancer - Our Vic
3. Race: First Buddy - Celestial Halo - Binocular
4. Race: Thisthatandtother - Where Now - Katarino
5. Race: Andreas - Leslingtaylor - Marcel
6. Race: Franchoek - Group Captain - Whiteoak
7. Race: Gustavo - Pacha D`Oudairies - Ring the Boss

Catterick and Nottingham

Flat racing in the U.K. today on turf a Catterick and Nottingham, and the latter track hasasoly the best card, including a listed event over 1 3/4 miles at 16.40 CET. Several of the runners are coming off a long break s the form is difficult to sum up. Frank Sonata (Mick Quinlan/ Tom Queally) wo this in 2006 and would havea great chance on his efforts that year, but is now running for the first time in 17 months.

There is very little between Spanish Hidalgo (John Dunlop/ Jimmy Fortune) and Veenwowden (Ed Vaughan/ Ryan Moore) on last autumn´s form. while Gull Wing (Michael Bell/ Richard Mullen), who is stepping up in trip, is another with prospects. Another smart performer hoping to repeat an earlier win here is Reverence (Eric Alston/ Jimmy Quinn), who won the 5 furlongs cnditions race, due off at 16.10, in 2006 and went to take 2 Group One races on soft ground.

He can make a winning comeback at the expense of Sonny Red (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes), runner-up in a big field over 6 furlongs at the recent Lincoln meeting at Doncaster. Another Doncaster runner-up is Puy d´Arnac (Alan Swinbank/ Robert Winston), who goes for the 1 3/4 miles handicap at Catterick at 16.20. CD specialist Hernando´s Boy (Keith Reveley/ Paul Hanagan) looks the main danger.

All-weather action at Lingfield and Kempton

Two all-weather meetings today, Lingfield in the afternoon and Kempton this evening with very modest cards at both. At Lingfield, the class 5 3yo maiden over 7 furlogs at 15.30 should concern mainly Andaman Sunset (Geoff Wragg/ Seb Sanders) and Meydan Dubai (John Best/ George Baker), while Sanders has another good chance in the 1 1/2 miles handicap an hour later on Sir Mark Prescott´s My Mentor, who has consistent top-weight War of the Roses (Roy Brotherton/ Jean-Pierre Guillambert) to beat. Sanders coulkd well be in for a successful day, as he can also win the 7 furlongs handicap at 18.00 with German-bred Napoletano for Simon Dow, and then travels to Kempton, where he also has 4 rides booked.

Huge fields at Gowran Park

Today´s Irish N.H.meeting at Gowran Park (6 races over hurdles and one bumper), is the only jumps meeting today and is effectively the first evening meeting of the season (excepting floodlit all-weather racing) as the first race is due off at 17.35 CET. Trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Ruby Walsh are no doubt concenrating more on the big Aintree meeting which starts tomorrow, but they can land a double here with Queveka in the novice hurdle at 18.05 and Rosy Cyborg in the maiden hurdle half an hour later

Tuesday, April 01, 2008

El Tango at Auteuil

French racing today comes from Auteuil (N.H.), Marseille (7 flat races, one over hurdles) and Vincennes (trotting this evening), but the Auteuil card is the most interesting, with some large fields racing on heavy ground. There are 18 runners in the opening tiercé handicap, the most valuable race on the card, and 18 also in the final Prix Arthur Viel-Picard, a hurdles race for 5yo´s and older horses over 3600 metres at 16.50 CET. The most interesting runner here is the dual German St. Leger winner El Tango, who is making his hurdles debut. Previoiusly with Peter Schergen, he is now trained by Francois Doumen and will be ridden by champion jockey Christophe Pieux. Although it is quite likely that there are some smart unknown quantities in opposition, it will be disappointing if El Tango does not run prominently today, especially as the going is in his favour.

N.H. racing at Wetherby

The ground is soft at Wetherby today, although it may dry out if no further rain falls, and some quite open N.H. racing is in prospect; as the steeplechase course is still regarded as unsafe it is an all-hurdles card (plus a bumper). Compromiznotension (Howard Johnson/ Denis O´Regan) was a close runner-up this CD 17 days ago and can go one better in the 2 miles novice hurdle at 15.40 CET. The handicap hurdle over 2 miles 3 furlongs at 16.15 looks to lie between Brook no Argument (John Quinn/ Dougie Costello) and Tarabaloo (Richard Guest/ Sam Jones), both of whom won well last time and still look leniently handicapped. The staying novice hurdle at 16.50 could alsobe a 2-horse race, between top-weight The Wooden Spoon (Jim Best/ Durack), the only winner in the field, and Mr. Barnacle (Nicky Richards/ Tony Dobbin), beaten in a photo at Newcastle in January. King Jack (Richard Phillips/ Richard Johnson), who has been in thr monbey all his starts so far, will be a short-ptoiced favourite to win the novice hurdle at 17,25, but Irish-trained hurdles debutant Farmaland (Noel Hynds/ Tom O´Brien) could be dangerous.

Rudry Dragon at Southwell

The most interesting runner at Southwell today, at least from the German point of view, is Paul Blockley´s Rudry Dragon (Robert Winston), who runs in the class 4 handicap over 11 furlongs at 16.40, as he still holds an entry in Cologne´s group race on Sunday. He certainly has no chance at all at Cologne (in the unlikely event that he runs), but could win this off a rating of 73. Main danger could come from oldtimer Kylkenny (Hughie Morrison/ Travis Block), who despite his 13 years is never to be underestimated at this track, where he has already won 16 times. Easily the best race at Southwell is the class 2 mile handicap at 17.45 which is one of the hottest handicaps run here in a long time.

Four of the 8 runners ran well at Doncaster on the opening day of the turf season: Rio Riva (Julie Camacho/ Tom Eaves) was an excellent fourth of 21 in the LÖincoln, where Very Wise (William Haggas/ Jimmy Fortune) was 14th after leading early; the latter is now 5 lbs better off and could easily reverse the placings, especially as he has better all-weather form to his credit. Benandonner (Richard fahey/ Paul Hanagan) was an excellent runner-up in the Spring Mile, with Regal Parade (David and Adrian Nicholls) further back. The one they have to beat is Vince Smith´s Silver Hotspur (William Buick), who is having an amazing year. He has already run 11 times in 2008, winning 6 times, all of them here and despite a huge jump in the weights, must be taken seriously in this much better race.

Folkestone today

Folkestone is not noted for high quality racing and today´s card is no exception. The best race is the 7 furlongs event for maidens at 17.00 CET. The 4 older horses have not made much impression so far, so the 10 3yo´s in the line-up should dominate. The three to concentrate on should be Peter Chapple-Hyam´s Glorious Gift, a close relation to Germany and in the frame both starts last year, and Oarsman (Roger Charlton/ Steve Drowne) and Pravda Street (Paul Cole/ Richard Quinn), who both finished runner-up on their only starts last year. The most interesting runner in the fillies handicap over 1 /2 miles at 18.05 is Naughty Thoughts (Tom Dascombe / Richard Kingscote), who has won her last 2 starts on the all-weather and has suddenly improved. However she has never run beyond 9 furlongs (although bred to stay) and her turf form is not inspiring, so she is no good thing on the likely heavy ground today.
