Lockinge Stakes at Newbury

Newbury, Saturday 20 May: A big day will be celebrated today at the second Festival event at Newbury, where the classic Lockinge Stakes (4th race/16.35pm/350,000 pounds/1609m) will mark the main event.

A year on from Baaeed, the Shadwell Estate Company could be ringing the cash register again as Group 2 winner Mutasaabeq (Jim Crowley) at Newmarket targets his next strike. He has Modern Games (William Buick) and Laurel (Frankie Dettori) from the Charlie Appleby and John and Thady Gosden stables to beat as a priority. The former recently finished second at Group 1 level in the USA after winning the Breeders` Cup at the same venue. The Juddmonte protégé successfully prepared for today`s task on the all-weather track at Kempton. The shortlist must include My Prospero (Tom Marquand). The four-year-old finished third in the Champion Stakes (Group 1) and was better than Baaeed after all. On the same day, Jadoomi (James Doyle) also convinced in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1) as third.
