Two group races at Newbury

Newbury, where the going is heavy, also stages a strong card featuring two Group Three races. The Horris Hill Stakes for 2yo´s over 7 furlongs at 15.20 CET is clearly much below the standard of the Group One for this age group at Doncaster and it will be surprising if these runners are up to classic level next season. Galiway (André Fabre/ Olivier Peslier) is the most interesting runner.

The well-bred Wertheimer colt narrowly won his only start so far, a maiden at Saint-Cloud; on the face of it, this form would not justify his being favourite here, but his trainer has an excellent strike rate in Britain and is not sendng him across the channel in order to sample the local wine. Piping Rock (Richard Hannon/ Pat Dobbs) is the alternative, having won both his races so far , one of them on heavy ground. The St. Simon Stakes over 1 1/2 miles at 15.55 could go to Godolphin, who have two runners Prince Bishop /Saeed bin Suroor/ Silvestre de Sousa) and Masterstroke (Charlie Appleby/ Adam Kirby).
