rest of Doncaster

The Doncaster card opens with a listed race for 2yo´s over 6 furlongs at 15.05. Stubbs (Aidan and Joseph O´Brien) is potentially the best runner here, but he has been off since running sixth as favourite for the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and has to concede weight all round. Umnder the circumstances we prefer Night of Thunder (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes), very easy winner at Goodwood on his debut 11 days ago, and Rufford (Richard Fahey/ Ryan Moore) who has some good form to his name.

The conditions race over 7 furlongs at 18.00 has attracted a small but select field. Highland Colori (Andrew Balding/ Oisin Murphy) is a horse we like. He was an impressive winner of the Ayr Gold Cup with this jockey and followed up with a good performance in a Group Two over this trip at Newmarket. However he has to concede 7 lbs to the other 4 runners and Sovereign Debt (Michael Bell/ Moore) in particular looks very dangerous. He goes well on the soft and has been running - without much success- in much better company.

The rest of the card consists of very tricky handicaps. Most of the runners in the 5 furlongs handicap at 16.15 hasve met before, several of them in the listed race over this trip at Ascot 3 weeks ago, in which Steps (Roger Varian/ Andreas Atzeni) was a narrow winner; he is now worse off at the weights with most of them but should run another big race. Several also ran in this race last year, in which Jamaican Bolt (Geoff Oldroyd/ James Doyle) was runner-up and he also goes on the short list, together withPearl Blue (Chris Wall/ Ted Durcan) and Judge `n Jury (Ron Harris/ Ross Coakley).

Many of the runners in the 1 1/2 mile handicap at 15.40 have also met before, notably in a similar race at York a fortnight ago, in which the whole field could have been covered by a blanket. Van Percy (Balding/ Cathy Gannon) looked a bit unlucky there ifn fifth and we make him the selection, although Godolphin´s improving Ennistown (Appleby/ Barzalona) is an obvious danger.
