Group race in Cork

With Royal Ascot starting on Tuesday, there is obviously no point in expecting high class racing today in the U.K., but there is a decent Irish card at Cork, headed by the Group Three Noblesse Stakes for fillies and mares over 1 1/2 miles at 17.50 CET. Grace o´Malley (Dermot Weld/ Pat Smullen) can take this, as her fourth place in the 2009 Irish Oaks is the best form on offer. A big danger could be Unity (David Wachman/ Johnny Murtagh), an easy maiden winner last time and stepping up in class, who is very well-bred and clearly stays well. Weld and Smullen also have a chance in the main supporting race, a listed event for 2yo´ s over 6 furlongs at 16.10, with Triple Event, but here we prefer Clondinnery (Ger Lyons/ Keagan Latham), who holds the Weld juvenile on earlier form, and represents last year´s winning team.

Best race in England is the listed Cathedral Stakes over 6 furlongs at 16.40 at Salisbury. This looks wide open, although in-form trainer Richard Hannon launches a strong challenge with 3 of the 10 runners, the pick of whom has to be Richard Hughes´ mount Angel´s Pursuit. However he faces a tough task for a 3yo against experienced older sprinters, and Godolphin´s Sirocco Breeze (Saeed bin Suroor/ Ted Durcan), already a winner twice in Meydan this year, is the highest-rated runner and has an obvious chance. Palace Moon (Hughie Morrison (Steve Drowne) and Swiss Diva (David Elsworth/ Jimmy Fortune) are both seasonal debutants but very dangerous on the best of last year´ s form. There was only a neck between them when they met at Newmarket last August, and there could be little in it again today.
