Ffos Las, Southwell and Wetherby

once again, very modest sport at the 3 meetings in the U.K. Ffos Las stages its first flat meeting of the year and the best race here is the 2 mile handicap at 17.05 CET. Yes Mr.President (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning) has a huge weight, but is the class act in the field, having run last time in the Cesarewitch. However he faces a stiff task giving weight to Gala Evening (Jim Old/ Richard Hughes and Sheshali (Evan Williams), both recent winners over this trip on the all-weather. The 3yo handicap over 1 1/2 miles could go to the much-improved Keenes Royale (Ralph Beckett)/ Jim Crowley), unbeaten in all her 3 starts this year, but Exemplary (Johnston/ Frankie Dettori) and Chink of Light (Andrew Balding/ Jimmy Fortune) look dangerous. The 2yo maiden at 15.20 has 10 runners, 4 of whom have already run, 3 of them finishing second. Lady Brookie (Bill Turner/ Jack Dean), beaten only a neck in the Brocklesbury at Doncaster is the selection here.
Johnston could also be on the mark at Southwell´s all-weather meeting, where both Staff Sergeant in the 3yo maiden at 15.40 and Ibn Hiyyam in the 3yo handicap at 16.45, both with Royston Ffrench in the saddle, hold good chances. Grudge is very consistent these days and has finished in the money on his last 8 starts, including a CD win in February; he can be placed again in the 5 furlongs handicap at 17.50.
The only jumping in the U.K. today is at Wetherby, where the 2 1/2 mile novice hurdle at 17.25 is one of the more interesting events. Both Love of Tara (Martin Keighly/ Sam Twiston-Davies) and Bocamix (Andy Crook/ Matt P´Connell) had no chance in much better company at Cheltenham, but Saveiro (Alan Swinbank/ Barry Hughes) looks due for a win, after running-up twice and being placed several times beforehand and is a narrow selection. German-bred Euro American /Rose Dobbin/ Brian Harding) has top weight in the 2 3/4 mile handicap at 16.20 and is also stepping up in distance, but still has each-way prospects.
