5 meetings today

Plenty of flat racing today, with meetings at Newcastle, Nottingham and Salisbury this afternoon and Kempton (a.w.) this evening, as well as Sligo in Ireland, but all are of low quality. The races for juveniles look the most interesting events, and at Salisbury, Fremont (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes), 4th in a bug salkes rac at Donbcaster last time, should win the 7 furlongs race at 16.40 CET. The class 2 conditions race over 6 furlongs here at 17.15 looks the best race of the day. San Cassiano (Ralph Beckett/ Seb Sanders) won his only race in good style, while Mon Cadeaux (Andrew Balding/ William Buick) was an easy CD winner before a lesser effort in good company at Goodwood, but with the Godolphin 2yo´s in tremendous form, Chaperno (Saeed bin Suroor/ Frankie Dettori) is taken to win this. Godolphin also have 2yo´s running at Newcastle in the mile maiden at 16.50, with Judiciary (Ahmed Ajtebi) looking the pick of their two runners, and at Nottingham, where the well-bred Bi nt Almatar (Ted Durcan) is expected to make a winning debut in the fillies maiden, also over a mile, at 17.00. Kempton´s evening meeting is very low-key, with even two of the dreaded classified stakes; most interesting runner here is Sir Mark Prescott´s Arty Crafty (Seb Sanders), who can remain unbeaten for the season in the 3yo handicap over 1 1/2 miles at 21.50. Main interest at the Irish fixture at Sligo will be to see if Pat Smullen, who has rides in every race, can establish a lead over Johnny Murtagh -not riding today - in their battle for the Irish jockeys championship. His best chances would appear to be Sajja at 16.40, Barrel of Fun at 17.45 and Miss Chaparral (18.15), all for trainer Dermot Weld.
