top 6 furlong handicaps at Ripon and Newmarket

The main feature at Ripon today is the Great St. Wilfrid Handicap at 16.55 CET, traditionally one of the top 6 furlong handicaps if the season. Several of the 20 runners also ran in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood a fortnight ago, where Markab (Henry Candy/ Pat Cosgrave) came out best, finishing 4th, which gives him obvious chances here. However he is once again drawn in the middle, probably a disadvantage here. Everymanforhimself (Kevin Ryan/ Neil Callan) won well at Haydock last time, while we also fancy Excusez-Moi (Ruth Carr/ Silvestre de Sousa) who won this race for Clive Brittain 3 years ago and is now back in good form for his new trainer, who is enjoying a purple patch right now. The top race at Newmarket is lso a 6 furlong handocap, but the race at 16.25 is restricted to 3yo´s. Noverre to Go (Tom Dascomb/ Richard Kingscote) won nicely at Ascot last wek, with Fivestarjunior (Linda Stubbs/ Darryll Holland) fourth and now 6 lbs better off. Bounty Box (Chris Wall/ Chris Cat lin), from another in-form yard, is also one for the short list. Much lower in grade, but equally fascinating is the 6 furlongs handicap for grey horses at Newmarket 15.50, also a very popular event. Finsbury (Jim Goldi/ Kelly Harrison) won this last year and is back on the same mark, while Sir Edwin Landseer (Gary Moore/ George Baker) and Zowington (Steve Williams/ William Carson) are the two class horses in the field but have a huge weight to carry. We also like the chances of Grey Boy (Tony Carroll/ Liam Jones), out of Grey Perri, one of our favourite racehorses, who could run well at a big price.
