Rest of U.K. racing today

Outside of Newmarket, the best racing today comes from Goodwood, who stage their first meeting of 2009, featuring a listed race for fillies and mares over a mile at 15.55 CET. This is virtially a re-run of a race run on the all-weather at Kempton, where German-bred Born Tobouggie (Henry Cecil/ Jimmy Quinn) ran out an easy winner from Perfect Star (Clive Cox/ Ian Mongan) and Scuffle (Roger Charlton/ George Baker). If she can repeat this form on turf, Born Tobouggie can win again, although 3 lbs worse off with the placed horses. At Thirsk, the main event is the Thirsk Hunt Cup, a very tricky mile handicap at 17.15. Tim Easterby has two good chances here with Charlie Tipple (Willie Supple) and Medici Pearl (Duran Fentiman), while Flawed Genius (Kevin Ryan/ Neil Callan) is another for the short list. On the jumping front, Uttoxeter stages two quite valuable handicaps - a 2 1/2 mile hurdle race at 16.20 with 11 runners and a 3 mile handicap chase with 18 runners at 16.55. If Calg ary Bay(Henrietta Knight / Sam Thomas) gets the trip, he must have a good chance in the latter, while German-bred Backbord (Lucy Wadham/ Leighton Aspell) is dangerous off bottom-weight. Top-weights Mirage Dor and Prince Taime can dominate the hurdle race. There is also low-level racing this evening at Doncaster (flat) and Hexham (N.H.)
