Rest of Newmarket

The remainder of today´s Newmarket card is also highly interesting, and the Jockey Club Stakes over 1 1/2 miles at 15.30 CET is always won by a smart performer (including Shirocco in 2006). As usual, there is a small field, and the finish should mainly concern Spanish Moon (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore), beaten a whisker in the Sheema Classic in Dubai, and Casual Conquest (Dermot Weld/ Pat Smullen), placed in both the English and Irish Derby last season. The Palace House Stakes over 5 furlongs at 16.45 is the first big early-season sprint and sees 16 runners line up, but only a few of genuine group race class. Overdose, were he running, would probably slaughter this field. As it is, the consistent Borderlescott (Robin Bastiman/ Pat Cosgrave) looks the one to beat. Dandy Man (Saeed bin Suroor/ Frankie Dettori) was well behind him in the Abbaye last October, but on this fast ground could well finish much closer, while 3yo Amour Propre (Henry Candy/ Dane O´Neill), whos trainer has a good record with sprinters, finished last year with 3 wins and could be a star in the making. The listed race for 3yo´s over 10 furlongs at 17.55 is often a good guide to the future, and Sopranist (John Gosden/ Jimmy Fortune) impressed a great deal when making all to win this CD on his debut at the Craven meeting. We shall know by now if the Godolphin horses are in form -if so, Frankie Dettori´ s mount Spring of Fame would be the obvious danger.
