Chester: Vase and Huxley Stakes

The Chester Vase over 1 1/2 miles for 3yo´s at 15.45 CET is the main event at Chester today, the meeting´s second day, and in the past has often been a good Derby Guide (remember Shergar?!) If there is a Derby winner in the field, it can surely only be either Debussy (John Gosden/ Jimmy Fortune), supplemented for Epsom after winning over the course last month, or Masterofthehorse (Aidan O´Brien/ Johnny Murtagh), clearly the better of the 2 Ballydoyle runners and one of the stable´s main hopes for Epsom. With the O´Brien stable now coming into top form, he is preferred today. The Vase was won last year by Doctor Fremantle, subsequently fourth in the Derby, and he now now runs in the Huxley Stakes for older horses at 15.15, also a Group 3, but run ovr 10 furlongs. Doctor Fremantle (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore) stands out on ratings, but John Gosden´s Expresso Star (Jimmy Fortune) could be a big threat; he has won his last 4 races and particularly impressive when winning the Lincoln last time. He is moving up in class and distance, but this is not expected to be a problem.
