Doncaster St. Leger meeting: day one

The four day St. Leger meeting at Doncaster kicks off today with a strong card and mainly good to soft going. Today´s main feature is the listed Scarborough Stakes over 5 furlongs at 15.35 CET, which has attrracted some smart sprinters, including the last two winners of the Prix de l´Abbaye, Benbaum (Mark Wallace/ Pat Smullen) and Desert Lord (Kevin Ryan/ Neil Callan). The former is preferred today, as he is better suited by the ground and finished in front when they contested the Nunthorpe last time out. Loch Verdi (Andrew Balding/ Liam Keniry), oiut of the brilliant Lochsong, is another who would prefer faster going, but Galeota (Richard Hannon/ Ryan Moore) looks a big danger. He is unbeaten in 3 starts here and won this race in 2007. The Hannon/ Moore team can strike again in the class 2 conditions race for 2yo´s over 6 furlongs at 16.10 with Bonnie Charlie. He has run two excellent races in defeat and the form of those races has been boosted since. The class 2 handicap fo r 3yo´s over 7 furlongs at 16.45 looks very trricky, although Carniolan (Walter Swinburn/ Adam Kirby) is the obvious favourite after two easy wins. However top/weight Keeps Discovering (Mark Johnston Darryll Holland), Fathsta (Silvester Kirk Jamie Spencer) and Harrison George (Richard Fahey Paul Hnagan) all look dangerous.
