Start of the Guineas Festival

Newmarket, Friday 5 May: The three-day Guineas Festival starts today at the Rowley Mile in Newmarket. First highlight is the `Mile` (2nd race/14.50pm/80,000 pounds/1609m) at Group 2 level. Native Trail (William Buick), runner-up in the 2000 Guineas (Group 1) twelve months ago, will be tested on his seasonal debut by Light Infantry (Jamie Spencer), who took two honours at the highest level in France last year, where Checkandchallenge (Andrea Atzeni) also enjoyed success.

In the Jockey Club Stakes (5th race/16.35pm/125,000 pounds/2400m) Charlie Appleby is going heavy for Godolphin with Hurricane Lane (William Buick) and Global Storm (James Doyle). They were unsuccessful at Newbury and Meydan respectively in their last appearances but hit it comparatively easy today. The one to beat is West Wind Blows (Jamie Spencer), who finished last year with placings in the Prix Dollar (Group 2) and Prix du Prince d`Orange (Group 3).
