Newmarket, Thursday 20 April: The Craven Meeting enters its second round today at the Rowley Mile.
First main event is the Abernant Stakes (3rd race/16.00pm/£80,000/1200m) at Group 3 level. The clear favourite in the nine-strong field is Creative Force (William Buick), trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, who finished third in his last two appearances in the Breeders` Cup and Champions Sprint Stakes (both Group 1). Richard Hannon`s Ehraz (Jim Crowley) is also thought to have a good chance of winning. The four-year-old running for Shadwell colours won his last race here in October and he currently finished third at Doncaster. Garrus (Ryan Moore) and Tiber Flow (Tom Marquand) must be noted for their performances last year.
In the Craven Stakes (4th race/16.35pm/£80,000/1609m) the Derby age group rehearse. There is one non-runner to report in the run-up through Naval Power, but Godolphin and Charlie Appleby have a second weapon in the race in Mysterious Night (William Buick). The Group 1 winner will be tested by Mostabshir (Jim Crowley), who John and Thady Gosden are preparing for Shadwell. He has last year`s victory at Kempton in his favour. The Foxes (Oisin Murphy) will attract a large following as winner of the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2). Indestructible (Kevin Stott) competes under new management. The Burke protégé pleased last year, among other things, as second in the Champagne Stakes (Group 2).
