Comeback of Adayar at Sandown

Sandown, Friday 28 April: There are two days of big races on the programme at the Jockey Club Racecourse at Sandown. Today the Sandown Mile (4th race/16.00pm/125,000 pounds/1609m) is among the highlights. Light Infantry (Jamie Spencer) competes under new management and could be a winner on his seasonal debut. A two-time runner-up at the highest level last year, the four-year-old will be tested by Checkandchallenge (Andrea Atzeni), who finished a good second here in July and later pinned the Prix Daphnis (Group 3) to his banner. Migration (Benoit de la Sayette) is recommended by his fresh win at Doncaster. Mutasaabeq (Jim Crowley) also won his last appearance in strong fashion.

In the Gordon Richard Stakes (3rd race/15.25pm/£80,000/2000m), the comeback of Derby winner Adayar (William Buick) is eagerly awaited. The five-year-old, trained by Charlie Appleby for Godolphin, will be supported by Highland Avenue (James Doyle). Prix Dollar (Group 2) winner Anmaat (Jim Crowley) will put Adayar through his paces.

Derby atmosphere comes to the three-year-olds in the Classic Trial (5th race/16.35pm/£80,000/2000m). Two-time track winner Arrest (Frankie Dettori) is the favourite, although Flying Honours (William Buick), who has also won here, is not far behind. Salt Bay (Rossy Ryan), Circle Of Fire (Ryan Moore) and Relentless Voyager (Oisin Murphy) have done nothing wrong so far and are always conceivable at the front.
