Tuesday re-named for the Irish Derby

Curragh, Saturday, 25 June: The Irish Derby (5th race/16.45/1m Euro/2410m), with a manageable field of eight horses, will be decided at the Curragh today. A dominant role has always been played by trainer Aidan O`Brien in the past years, who announces his first chances with Tuesday (Ryan Moore). The English Oaks winner took the honours here in the 1000 Guineas, finishing third in the English equivalent. Her fiercest rival should be Westover (Colin Keane), who narrowly missed out on second place in the Epsom Derby after winning the Classic Trial (Group 3) at Sandown. Lionel (Jamie Spencer) prepared successfully for today`s task at Goodwood at List level and Hannibal Barca (Shane Crosse) here in the Gallinule Stakes (Group 3) ahead of Boundless Ocean (Kevin Manning). The first two are among the extended group of favourites. Piz Badile (Gavin Ryan) and Glory Daze (Ronan Whelan) should have learned their lesson after their unsuccessful performances in the English Derby. French Claim (W. Lee) ran decently in the Derby Trial (Group 3).
