3 poor meetings today

another Monday with very unexciting racing in store. The only racing on turf is the N.H. meeting at Musselburgh, where local trainer Jim Goldie is usually the man to follow. He can land a double here with Los Nadis (Graham Watters) in the handicap chase at 13.15 CET and Merchant of Dubai (Denis O´Regan) in the handicap hurdle over the same trip of 2 1/2 miles at 15.20. German-bred Los Nadis is one of our favourites even though he has a poor strike rate nowadays and has in fact never won over fences; however he normally runs in much better company and can possibly outclass this weak opposition. Merchant of Dubai is a similar case, in that he is a multiple winner on the flat, but has never scored over jumps; however off bottom weight he must have a good chance here. O´Regan is presumably here to partner Population for John Ferguson in the maiden hurdle at 14.15; if form means anything he should be unbeatable here, but will start at long odds-on.
The two all-weather cards are very weak indeed. The best race is the 10 furlongs handicap at 15.30 at Lingfield. Richard Hannon and Sean Levey won this last year and they can score again with the lightly-raced 3yo Rhamnus; he is far from being one of the stable stars but ran well enough last time over this CD to suggest that he can take this. The mile handicap an hour later can go to the well-bred The Great Gabrial (Ian Williams/ Tom Queally); he did not run at all at 2 and 3, but has made up for lost time this year with 5 wins, the last two over this CD. He is no longer so well handicapped, but we feel that he still has races in him.
At Wolverhampton we like Doldrums (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning) at 17.40; he won his only career start over slightly shorter 3 weeks ago at this track and that form is probably good enough for him to score again.
