July Meeting at Newmarket: day two with Falmouth Stakes

The Group One Falmouth Stakes for fillies over a mile at 16.00 CET is the main feature of the second day of the July meeting at Newmarket and we expect a French victory. There are in fact 3 French runners, Golden Lilac (André Fabre/ Maxime Guyon), Giofra (Alain de Royer-Dupré/ Christophe Soumillon) and Siyouma (Francois Doumen/ Gerald Mossé) and while the last-named needs to improve to figure here, we would not be surprised to see the first two, both of which are German-owned, to take the first two places. Golden Lilac is the class act here, having won both French fillies´classics last year and beaten Ciurrs des Aigles on her only outing this season, but the soft ground is a bit of a worry. However on a line through Cirrus des Aigles she should hold Giofra, although that one seems much improved this year. Irish hopes Alanza (John Oxx/ Johnny Murtagh) and Maybe (Aidan O´Brien/ Ryan Moore) could be the main dangers to the French, as the British fillies do not look good enough.

The other group race at Newmarket today is the Cherry Hinton Stakes for 2yo fillies at 15.25, in which Richard Hannon has a strong hand with two unbeaten runners City Image (Ryan Moore) and Maureen (Jimmy Fortune), while the sole Irish runner Sendmylovetorose (A Oliver/ Colm O´Donoghue) is also unbeaten. With the form lines quite confusing here, no bet is recommended but the race should certainly be watched for future clues.
There are big fields in the handicaps and maiden races which all look very tricky from the punting point of view, but for those looking for a longshot we recommend Semayyel (Clive Brittain/ Neil Callan) in the 6 furlongs handicap for 3yo´s at 14.50,
