Rest of today´s racing

The listed Aston Park Stakes over 1 mile 5 furlongs at 15.00 CET is the main supporting fixture at Newbury and has attracted a strong field. Front-runner Akmar (John Dunlop/ Richard Hills) could win this if given a soft lead, while the very consistent Pollys Mark (Clive Cox/ Luke Morris) and Drunken Sailor (Luca Cumani/ Kieren Fallon)probably need a bit of rain to be effective, leaving the Tiger Hill filly Ship´s Biscuit (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore) as the chief danger. The other big race at Newbury is the London Gold Cup, a 10 furlongs handicap for 3yo s at 16.10. This looks really tricky as all the runners are lightly-raced and it is certain that several will leave their handicap well behind before long. The Queen´s General Synod (Richard Hannon/ Jamie Spencer) is one of those who have only run 3 times and he is on the short list, together with Dominant (Roger Varian/ Neil Callan), who looked very unlucky at Sandown last time.

Main feature at Newmarket is a valuable handicap over 1 3/4 miles at 15.50, which also looks wide open. Chiberta King (Andrew Balding/ Jimmy Fortune) won this last year and would have an excellent chance of following up off this mark, but appears to have lost form completely. The winners trophy could well go north, as Mark Johnston and Richard Fahey both saddle 3 runners and Jim Goldie two. Of these we prefer Goldie´s top-weight Nanton (Danny Tudhope), who has not won for 20 months, but has generally been running well in top handicaps. The big threat is Abergavenny (Brian Ellison/ Paul Pickard), who has won twice over hurdles recenty and looks dangerously well-handicapped on the flat.
