Newbury today

There is racing all over today but apart from York, the only quality sport is to be seen at Newbury, where there are 2 listed races on the card. The race over 10 furlongs at 15.10 is for 3yo fillies and most of the fillies have an Oaks entry, though none are likely to make much impact at that level from what we have seen so far. John Gosden, whose stable is in form, has two runners here Devastation (Nicky Mackay) and Izzi Top (Dane O´Neill). When they met last October in Doncaster, the former came out on top, but she has not run since, while Izzi Top has already run twice this season, so could have an advantage here. However the likeliest winner in our view is the German-bred Rumh (Saeed bin Suroor/ Frankie Dettori), a daughter of Monsun, an easy winner at Wolverhampton in October and expected to be able to hold her own in better company.

The other listed race is over 6 furlongs at 17.20. Elzaam (Roger Varian/ Richard Hills) found the trip too far last time, but should be well suited by today´s distance. However we prefer Dinkum Diamond (Henry Candy/ O´Neill) who did not get the run of the race when third to the smart Genki at Newmarket last time. Another German-bred of interest is Mauritino (Jonjo O´Neill/ Jim Crowley) who runs in the 10 furlongs handicap at 15.40. He has not run on the flat for a while, but has been in good form over jumps, winning his last 2 races, and won 4 races in Germany in 2009. He could well be on a very favourable mark here.
