Classic trials at Goodwood

With only two and a half weeks to go before the Derby meeting, today´s listed races at Goodwood are the last classic trials of any significance, but both have a good record. Last year´s winners Snow Fairy and Rewilding went on to win the Oaks and run third in the Derby respectively. The fillies race over 10 furlongs at 16.10 CET has only 7 runners but still looks quite open.

John Gosden has a strong hand here with 2 runners Highest (Frankie Dettori) and Imperial Pippin (William Buick), both maiden winners last time out and moving up in grade. Beatrice Aurore (John Dunlop/ Ted Durcan) beat Askaud here last time, who runs in the previous race and should give some indication of the value of the form. Date with Destiny (Richard Hannon/ Richrd Hughes) was a well-beaten third in the Lingfield Oaks Trial, but that still gives her a chance here. She is the only product of the ill-fated George Washington and has quite some value as a broodmare if she can win a listed race.

The colts race is over a furlong further at 17.20. Godolphin won this last year and now run Badeel (Saeed bin Suroor/ Dettori), who looked very useful when winning at Nottingham last time. Auld Burns (Hannon/ Hiughes) also has good form and wn a valuable sales race at Newmarket, while Picture Editor was an intended pacemaker for Frankel last time but could not get to the lead, finally finishing over 12 lengths behind his stable companion. This distance is far more suitable and he can rehabilitate himself here.
