three group races at Newbury

there is also excellent flat racing at Newbury today, with 3 group races, including two significant classic trials. The Fred Darling, for fillies over 7 furlongs at 16.05 features four fillies who ran behind Special Duty in last year´s Cheveley Park. Misheer (Clive Brittain/ Neil Callan), was runner-up, only inches in front of Lady of the Desert (Brian Meehan/ Kieren Fallon- not certain to be riding today after being kicked yesterday), with Puff (Ralph Beckett) fourth and Habaayib (Ed Dunlop/ Richard Hills) well behind. Lady of the Desert, out of the top-class Queen´s Logic, may come out best of these, but Deirdre (John Gosden/ William Buick) could be an interesting alternative at a better price. She was an impressive winner of a Newcastle maiden last October, and although this is far tougher, she could well be up to this grade.
Gosden and Buick team up with a similar sort in the Greenham Stakes for colts at 16.40, also over 7 furlongs, in which there are only 5 runners. This is Bullwhip, an easy Doncaster winner last month. In theiry the finish hr should only concern Arcano (Meehan/ Richard Hills) and Canford Cliffs (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes), winner and third respectively in the Prix Morny last August, and both unraced since. It would be no surprise to se Canford Cliffs, a most impressive Royal Ascot, winner, to take his revenge now.
The other big race at Newbury is the John Porter Stakes over 1 1/2 miles, which has attracted a huge field of 16 runners. Purple Moon (Luca Cumni/ Fallon?) has not run for 13 months, but is very smart, while top-weight Halicarnassus (Mick Channon/ Alan Munro) ran some good races at the Meydan meeting. Buxted (Robert Mills/ Steven Donohoe) is unbeaten, but all his starts so far have been on the all-weather and he has never yet encountered opposition as strong as this. The two we like best here are Harbinger (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore) and Clowance (Roger Charlton/ Frankie Dettori), two lightly-raced sorts who look as if they will improve a lot this season.
