Irish racing today

the big race in Irelad today is the Group Three Ballysax Stakes for 3yo´s over 10 furlongs at 17.10 CET. Aidan O´Brien often uses this race as a prep for his Derby candidates, and his winners include Galileo, Yeats and last year, Fame and Glory. His stable is now coming into form after a slow start to the season, so his two runners Mikhail Glinka (Johnny Murtagh) and At First Sight (Seamus Heffernan) have to be on the short list, but it looks quite an open race with recent CD winner Mister Carter (Tommy Stack/ Wayne Lordan) and Famous Warrior (Kevin Prendergast/ Declan McDonagh) also respected. The listed mile race at 16.35 looks likely to be won by Dermot Weld´s Famous Name (Pat Smullen), but Gan Amhras (Jim Bolger/ Kevin Manning), who ran very badly last week on heavy ground, would be a big danger at this best. The undercard could well be dominated by O´Brien, who has fancied runners in several races, including African Cat and Andantino in the two 3yo handicaps at 15.30 and 16.00, both with stable jockey Murtagh in the saddle.
There is also jumps racing today at Tramore. Obviously with the big Punchestown meeting starting on Tuesday, no fireworks can be expected here, but Willie Mullins and his son Paddy can land a first and last race double with Drive on Regardless in the maiden hurdle at 15.15 and Clonard Lad in the bumper at 18.35.
