Brighton and Kempton (a.w.)

the only flat racing today is this afternoon at Brighton and this evening on the all-weather at Kempton, with several jockeys riding at both meetings. Brighton in late October can be very miserable and so is the card for their last fixture of 2009. Godolphin´s 2yo´s seem to win every day and their well-bred debutant Tertiary (Ahmed Ajtebi) can keep up this record in the mile maiden at 16.35 CET, where once-raced Athenian Garden (Henry Cecil/ Tom Queally) could be the main danger. Tom Queally also partners bottom-weight Elusive Hawk for Barney Curley in the 6 furlongs handicap at 16.05. This one has not run since winning at Southwell in July, but with Barney´s horses now running well, can score again with The Galloping Shoe (Jeremy Noseda/ Ryan Moore) and Lochan Mor (Michal Bell/ Hayley Turner) the main dangers. The best races at Kempton this evening are the 10 furlongs handicap at 20.20 and the 5 furlongs handicap half an hour earlier. Both look very difficult, but our short lists include Dear Maurice (Ed Dunlop/ Jamie Spencer), Poyle Meg (Ralph Beckett/ John Fahy) and Thunderball (Jeremy Glover/ Freddie Tylicki) in the former event, and top-weight Lochstar (Andrew Balding/ David Probert) and Step it Up (James Boyle/ Andrea Atzeni) in the latter. Although Balding´s stable is not firing on all fronts at present, we make Lochstar, who has not run since the summer and is a son of the brilliant sprinter Lochsong, our best bet of the evening.
