Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville

The best race in Europe today is the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest over 1300 metres at 16.30 at Deauville, which has been won for the past 3 years by Marchand d´Or. He is not running today, but his trainer Freddie Head can still take the race with Naaqoos (Davy Bonilla), who is dropping back in distance but is arguably the class horse in the field on his smart 2yo form last year. The Head family have good chances here, with Criquette saddling African Rose (Stephane Pasquier) and her father´s Dunkerque (Dominique Boeuf), while there is a strong challenge from England where 5 of the 12 runners are trained.

Best of them could be King´s Apostle (William Haggas/ Ryan Moore), unlucky in the July Cup last time, and Serious Attitude (Rae Guest/ Eddie Ahern). There are no German runners in the highlight, but three with chances on the undercard are Grand Archer (Nina Bach/ Anne-Sophie Pacault) in the Fegentri ladies race over 1500 metres PSF at 14.15, Secundus (Hans Blume/ David Bellocq) in the 2400 metres PSF Fegentri race for gentlemen riders at 17.35, and Double Handful (Michael Figge/ Pasquier) in a conditions race for 3yo´s over 2000 metres at 17.05; last time out Double Handful made much of the running in the German Derby and will no doubt find this company less demanding.
