Super Sprint at Newbury

The most valuable race of the day is the Weatherby´s Super Sprint for 2yo´s bought at public auction over 5 furlongs at 16.25 CET at Newbury. This is always a hot race and the trainer to follow here is Richard Hannon, who has already won the event 6 times and now saddles 5 of the 23 runners. Clear form choice is Monsieur Chevalier (Richard Hughes), who stratd 2009 by winning his first 4 racs and thn was 5th aftr being badly hampered at Royal Ascot. However it is worth bearing in mind that favourites have a poor record in this event, while the no. 2 draw is not necssarily an advantage on soft ground here. Reach for the Sky (Hannon/ Adrian McCarthy) is also drawn low, while Reignier (Karl Burke/ Andrew Elliott) and Red Avalanche (Paul Cole/ Frankie Dettori) are both drawn near the stands rail and strongly-fancied Shamandar (William Haggas/ Kirsty Milczarek) is drawn in the middle. We will have a better idea of the effect of the draw after the Group Three Shadwell Stakes over 6 furlongs at 15.20, the classiest race of the day. Ex- South African War Artist (James Eustace/ Tom Queally) is the class act here following his close third place in the 2008 July Cup, but he has not run since and needs fast ground. High Standing (William Haggas/ Ryan Moore) is unbeaten this season and won the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, he can take this step up in grade, while lightly raced Palace Moon (Hughie Morrison/ Steve Drowne) could be the danger.

The other big race at Newbury is the listed vent over 10 furlongs at 16.55. The Godolphin stable, now in good form, has three chances with stable jockey Frankie Dettori aboard Covert Ambition, who just holds Tranquil Tiger (Henry Cecil/ Tom Queally) on Sandwn form, but the other Godolphin runners Crime Scene (Ahmed Ajtebi) and especially Prince Siegfried (Daragh O Donoghue) could also run well. Course specialist Blue Monday (Roger Charlton/ Steve Drowne) is making his seasonal debut but would be a big danger if in top form.
