John Smith´s Cup at York

Despite the group races at Ascot and the Curragh, the most valuable race of the day is the John Smith´s Cup at York at 16.10 CET, a 10 furlongs handicap which is being run for the 50th time. With 20 runners, this looks very difficult indeed, but Luca Cumani, who has an excellent record in ths big handicaps, has an obvious chance with Goodwood winner Riggins (Neil Callan). With the Godolphin stable back in form, Moonquake (Saeed bin Suroor/ Frankie Dettori) muist be feared, but the outside draw could be a disadvantage for this front-runner. The Queen´s Kingdom of Fife (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore) is another leading fancy, while Seeking the Fuck (Ralph Beckett/ Seb Sanders) could also go close. Sirvino (David Barron/ Neil Brown) is undefeated in 4 starts this year, while Richard Fahey - another trainer in great form and who has won this race for the past 2 seasons, saddles 3 runners, of which we prefer Unbreak my Heart, the mount of Freddie Tylicki. The John Smith´s Silver Cup over 1 3/4 miles, another valuable handicap at 16.45, is a listed race and should mainly concern the 3 top-weights Furmigadelagiusta (Karl Burke/ Neil Callan), Friston Forest (Saeed bin Suroor/ Frankie Dettori) and Drill Sergeant (Mark Johnston/ Joe Fanning).
