Southwell today

Southwell is the only all-weather track in action today, but the card of 8 races (5 class 6, the rest class 5) is not inspiring with most of the runners fully exposed as moderate and inconsistent. If there is a good performer running here, it can only be in the 3yo maiden over a mile at 16.40 CET. On what has been seen in public, Hughie Morrison´s Assail (Travis Block), runner-up here on his only start last year, looks the logical choice, but the presence of some well-bred newcomers from top trainers such as Mark Johnston and Sir Mark Prescott could make things interesting. German-bred Safin (Roger Curtis/ Miss C. Boxall) ran a stinker last week, but his earlier form gives him a chance in the 1 3/4 miles handicap for amateur riders at 14.10. Previously he had won at 66-1, and another recent winner at the same price was Dark Tara (Richard Fahey/ Paul Hanagan), who can show that this success was no fluke by following up in the fillies handicap at 16.10. Jordi Roper (Steve Parr/ Dale Gibson) has been kept very busy of late, and the 6 furlongs handicap at 15.10 will be his 9th start since mid-December. However he is in good form, especially at this track, and can score his second career success today - the first was also over this CD and with this jockey on board. Kevin Ryan and Jamie Spencer have an excellent strike rate when teaming up and can take the final mile handicap at 17.10 with hat-trick-seeking Mrs. Bun.
