Southwell (all-weather) today

The only flat racing today takes place at the all-weather track at Southwell and with 6 of the 8 races class 6 and the other 2 class 5, very little classy action can be expected. However it is certainly unusual to find leading Irish trainer David Wachman sending a runner to this meeting, and his lightly-raced Crystal Crown (Jamie Spencer), never better than 6th on his 3 starts so far, is potentially thrown in at the weights in the class 5 mile handicap at 15.50 CET. There is another unexposed sort in the field, Brigydon (James Fanshawe/ Adam Kirby), a 5yo with only 4 career starts, and it would be no surprise to see these two fight out the finish. Otherwise the selling race over the same trip half an hour hour earlier could be the most interesting betting heat, with several runners dropped in grade, e.g. Barkass (Brian Ellison/ George Baker) and Red Espresso (Michael Bell/ Spencer), but the real fly in the ointment here could be Captain Royale (Tracy Waggott/ Neil Callan), bo ught for peanuts out of Jeremy Noseda´s yard after several very poor performances, but who was thought good enough to run in a Group One as a 2yo.
