rest of Champions Day at Newmarket

with 5 further group races as well as one of the season´s top handicaps, the rest of the Newmarket card is also extremely strong, with the Group One Dewhurst Stakes for 2yo´s over 7 furlongs at 15.35 CET the highlight. This race has been won by many great horses over the years, but today´s edition looks slightly substandard, unless Aidan O´Brien´s Rip van Winkle (Johnny Murtagh) delivers the goods in style. he was won both his starts so far well enough, but this opposition looks much tougher. Both Soul City (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes), winner of the Goffs Million last time, and Lord Shanakill (Karl Burke/ Jim Crowley), have had plenty of racing but they are both tough types who can be relied upon to give their running, while Brian Meehan´s Delegator (Jamie Spencer) is very lightly raced and could be a big improver and Ashram (John Hills/ Ryan Moore), the only CD winner in the field, also has his chance.

The Group Two Challenge Stakes over 7 furlongs that opens the card at 15.05 looks wide open, but Major Cadeaux (Hannon/ Hughes), although conceding weight all round, should be involved; Stimulation (Hughie Morrison/ Darryll Holland) and Cat Junior (Meehan/ Spencer) look the main dangers. The battle between experience and promise looks to be renewed in the Group Two race for 2yo fillies at 17.25. Both Aspen Darling (Alan Bailey/ Jimmy Quinn) and Lahaleeb (Mick Channon/ Holland) have shown continual improvement thoughout a long season, but Sir Michael Stoute´s Purissima (Moore), a very easy winner of a modest maiden at Warwick last week, is expected to take this huge step up in class in style. Older fillies and mares line up over 1 1/2 miles in the Group Three at 18.00, in which Tommy Stack s St.Leger runner-up Unsong Heroine (Wayne Lordan) has Dar Re Mi (John Gosden/ Frankie Dettori) and Crystal Capella (Stoute/ Moore) to beat, and in the final 2 mile Group Three, oldtimer Dis tinction can round off a good day for the Stoute/ Moore team. Big betting rce is clearly the Cesarewitch over 2 1/4 miles at 16.50 with 35 runners. Last year´s winner Leg Spinner (Tony Martin/ Robbie Colgan) turns out again under top-weight, but tzhe Irish trainer probably has better chances with Arc Bleu (Johnny Murtagh), thoigh those who remember him from his Munich days will not believe that he will stay this trip. Another German-bred, the 11yo Caracciola (Nicky Henderson/ Eddie Ahern) was runner-up here in 2007 and should again go well, but our fancy is David Pipe´s Mamlook (Ryan Moore), not seen out since just failing to win the Ascot Stakes in June.
