Catterick, Southwell (a.w.) and Yarmouth

The three British flat meetings today are all very average, with no races better than class 4 (and only one of them at each track). At Catterick, Zegna (Bryan Smart/ Tom Eaves) should win the opening 2yo maiden at 14.30 following her photo-finish defeat in a similar event at Pontefract last week, and trainer and jockey can follow up an hour later with Chosen One in a 3yo handicap over the same distance of 6 furlongs. Eaves also has a chance in the 7 furlongs handicap at 16.00 with Hiccups, who has a good record here, but this is a very open race and Quest for Success (Richard Fahey/ Tony Hamilton), unpenalised for an easy win at Doncaster on Saturday, and CD specialist Daweeitza (Brian Ellison/ Neil Brown) are others with chances. The interesting feature at Yarmouth is that Frankie Dettori, fresh from his huge success at Santa Anita on Saturday, comes here to ride two 2yo maidens for Godolphin. Yirga, in the 7 furlongs race at 14.40 is a debutant, while Al Marmoom in the mil e race at 16.10 ran well enough when 2nd of 14 at Leicester last time to win a race of this nature, although in both cases there are other well-bred juveniles from top stables in the field. On the all-weather at Southwell, some oldtimers could well take centre stage. Trance (David Barron/ Michael Stainton) has a mind of his own, but the handicapper has given him a chance in the 1 3/4 miles event at 15.20; he has dropped 28 lbs since his last win, and was also a CD winner in younger days. Cult horse Pawan (Ann Stokell), also an 8yo, runs in the 6 furlongs handicap at 16.20; although held by My Gacho on his latest running, he should never be underestimated at his favourite track.
