Group races at Newbury

The best British meeting this afternoon outside Ayr is clearly Newbury, were there are some large fields, very competitive handicaps, and two group races. The Group Two race over 6 furlongs for 3y´s at 15.35 CET sees a renwed clash between Gallagher (Brian Meehan/ Jimmy Fortune) and Lord Shanakill (Karl Burke/ Jim Crowley), who fonished second and third in the Prix Morny at Deauville. Gallagher, who was also a clse second in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, is the logical choice, but the Burke runner is very reliable and should not be far away. The 5 furlongs race at 16.45 sees several of the country´s fastest horses in action, notably the very speedy Enticing (William Haggas/ Liam Jones) and Alan Berry´s 3yo filly Look Busy (Slade O´Hara), unbeate in her last 6 races over this trip. Galeota (Richard Hannon/ Ryan Moore) was back to form with a narrow win at Doncaster last week from Andrew Balding´s Loch Verdi, but it would be no surprise to see the latter reverse the form now that she is ridden by Frankie Dettori, who had such a successful partnership with her dam Lochsong ("Lynford Christie without the lunchbox"). However one that should not be left out is Linda Jewell´s Rowe Park, who sprang a 25-1 shock in this race last year, beating Enticing among others.
