Top fillies at Deauville

Peter Schiergen was out of luck with Goathemala at Deauville yesterday, but tries again today with another 3yo fillY Briseida, winner of the German 1,000 Guineas two months ago. Martin Dwyer, who rode her then, has been booked again, but she faces very strong opposition in the Prix Rothschild (ex-Prix d´Astarte), a Group One over a mile at 15.15 CET. Alain de Royer-Dupré, who has this race for the past two seasons, holds a strong hand with Darjina, last year´s winer with Christophe Spumillon in the saddle, and Sabana Perdida (Thierry Jarnet), but he has expressed misgivings about the going and it is not certain that they will both run . Newmarket 1,000 Guineas winner Natagora (Pascal Bary/ Christophe Lemaire) and Goldikova (Olivier Peslier) from the in-form Freddie Head stable are other strong contenders, as well as Mark Johnson´s Nahoodh (Frankie Dettori), winner of the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time, when Briseida finished fifth. The German filly will do well to finish in the frame here. The other Group race at Deauville today is the Prix de Cabourg for 2yo´s over 6 furlongs at 14.10 with 5 runners. Paul Cole has his string in excellent form and can take this with Abbeyside (Soumillon), who scored well over this track on his debut.
