Clonmel and Great Leighs

There is also racing this evening at Clonmel in Ireland and Great Leighs (all-waether), where the best race is the class 4 handicap over 1 furlongs at 19.40 CET. An interesting runner here is the ex-German Birkspiel (Simon Dow/ Jimmy Quinn), who has however been totally out of form on his last few runs, but has now slipped to a very favoable rating. He seems to be best on heavy going, so it remains to be seen how he will cope here. Two who will certainly cope are Basra (Jo CRowley/ Richard Mullen) and Mataram(Willie Jarvis/ Jean-Pierre Guillambert), who fought out the finish of a milar race here a fortnight ago; Basra came out of top then but Mataram may be able to turn the tables now on 5 lbs better terms. Art Man (Gary Moore/ George Baker), who has won 3 of his last 4 races, isd also dangerous, but is another one running a this track for the first time. At Clonmel thdre is a mixed card, with 3 flat races, 3 N.H. and one jumper. Most interesting runner on the card is The Ethiopian (Noel Meade/ Paul Carberry), who is making his jumping debut in the maiden hurdle at 18.25. If he jumps round safely, this own brother to Derby winner High Chaparral ought to win this easily.
