Derby trial at Goodwood

Yesterday´s big race for fillies at Goodwood was won in very convincing style by Luca Cumani´s Lady of Dubai, but the trainer has not yet decided whether to run her in the Oaks in a fortnight´s time. Today we have a similar race for colts at 17.00 CET, and it is doubtful whether any of these runners will go on to triumph at Epsom. In fact the only horse to have won this race and followed up in the Derby was Troy, back in 1979! Today´ s race should mainly concern just 3 of the 6 runners, Godolphin´s Best of Times (Saeed bin Suroor/ James Doyle), winner of his last 3 races including a similar event at Newmarket, and Storm the Stars (William Haggas/ Pat Cosgrave) and Medrano (David Brown/ Richard Hughes), second and third to Aidan O´Brien´s Derby hope Hans Holbein at Chester. None of these can be regarded as serious Derby horses with the possible exception of Best of Times, so the Godolphin runner, who has to concede 3 lbs all round, is the selection here. Godolphin can follow up with Endless Time (Charlie Appleby/ Martin Lane) in the filllies handicap 35 minutes later; she has won her last two races and although up in distance here, she is a daughter of Sea The Stars so that should be no great problem. The stable´s other main jockey William Buick is at Haydock and should also be among the winners.
