Newmarket´s final meeting of 2011 starts today, when the listed race for 2yo fillies at 16.00 CET is the main feature. It looks a very open race with 14 runners, none of them outstanding. Villeneuve (Willie Muir/ Ryan Moore) had no chance in a group race here last month, but in this lower grade she might be worth chancing. Frankie Dettori does not ride in this race, but we fancy he can win on his only 2 mounts, Fa´lz in the 2yo maiden at 14.50 and Zabeel Park in the conditions race at 17.45, both for Saeed bin Suroor, whose string has finally struck form.
The only other flat racing today is on the all-weather this evening at Wolverhampton and Dundalk; the former meeting is weak, but the Irish fixture looks very competitive with maximum fields in all 8 races. The best race is the 6 furlongs handicap at 19.55, which could well end in a British victory as both Five Star Junior (Linda Stubbs/ Johnny Murtagh) and What about You (Richard Fahey/ Colm O´ Donoghue) both have chances based on their latest form.
There is jumps racing at Uttoxeter (low level) and Wetherby, which is notable for the return of Ruby Walsh. He said earlier in the week that he would not ride here in protest against the suspension given him last week by the Aintree stewards, so it could be significant that he has changed his mind, and now comes over for just one ride - Fistral Beach for Paul Nicholls at 16.20. However we cannot resist a small bet here on the 14yo veteran Mister McGoldrick (Sue Smith/ Shane Byrne), a course specialist who has been off since January but would win this if anywhere near his old form. 4 of the horses that ran in the voided race over this CD earlier this month reappear in the handicap hurdle at 15.45; Cunning Clarets (Richard Fahey/ Dougie Costello) won that "race" and can gain compensation today.
