Newmarket Cambridgeshire meeting starts today

The Newmarket Cambridgeshire meeting begins today, and although the cards on Friday and Saturday are stronger, today´s is also pretty good with a group race and 2 listed races. Main event is the Somerville Tattersall Stakes for 2yo colt and geldings over 7 furlongs at 16.55 CET. Farraaj (Roger Varian/ Frankie Dettori) is the obvious favourite here, after winning his last 2 races in good style, and the form has been boosted since. The main dangers come from Ireland in the shape of Crusade (Aidan O´Brien/ Colm O´Donoghue) and Zip Top (Jim Bolger/ Kevin Manning).

O´Brien and O´Donoghue also have a chance in the listed race for fillies over 1 1/2 miles at 16.20 with Spin, who failed to stay 2 miles time at Doncaster. She is the best of the 3yo´s here but the 6yo Cill Rialiag (Hughie Morrison/ Steve Drowne), unlucky at St. Cloud last time, could be a big threat. The other listed race is a 2 mile event which used to be run at Ascot and was won last year by Fictional Account (Vincent Ward/ Fran Berry), who is in the line-up again; both she and her stable companion End of the Affair (Kevin Manning) are expected to be retired to stud after this race. Times Up (John Dunlop/ Eddie Ahern), a smart handicapper last year but a listed winner this, and Nehaam (John Gosden/ William Buick) look the best of the Brits.
