5 bad meetings today

after another big weekend, an anti-climax Monday with poor racing all round. The U.K. racing this afternoon is almost all on the all-weather, with 8 races from Wolverhampton and 3 at Lingfield, where the first 4 (all instantly forgettable) are on turf. Best bet at the latter track is Kawssaj (Roger Varian/ Neil Callan) in the 3yo maiden at 17.30 CET but he will be at very short odds. Callan can follow up in the next race with Tony Carroll´s Valmina who landed a gamble here on Friday and can score again under a 6 lbs penalty.
There are some quite big fields this evening at Windsor and Thirsk, but again very little quality. Kieren Fallon, who gave an exhibition of race-riding at Düsseldorf yesterday, is still hoping to become champion jockey in Britain this year and has several good chances at Windsor. To our mind the most interesting could be Willie Musson´s Novellen Lad in the 6 furlongs handicap at 19.40; he had no chance in the Stewards Cup last time, but this is more his level. Top-weight Zero Money (Roger Charlton/ Jimmy Fortune) is an obvious danger.
Andrew Balding does not have many runners at Thirsk, so his Benzanno (David Probert) must be noted in the opening 2yo maiden at 20.00 after his good debut at Leicester. 9yo German-bred Soprano (Jim Goldie/ Danny Tudhope), out of a Surumu mare, is in the form of his life and has won on the flat and over hurdles in the last fortnight. He can take the 2 mile handicap at 21.30 as he is still on a very lenient mark.
There is a mixed meeting (3 flat races, 4 over hurdles) at the Irish evening fixture at Ballinrobe. The 2 1/2 mile hurdle race at 20.50 is the best race with some decent types entered, but Muirhead (Noel Meade/ Paul Carberry) stands out in this grade.
