two group races at Newbury

Doncaster is not the only racecourse to stage a big race for 2yo´s as the Horris Hill Stakes over 7 furlongs at 15.05 CET is also a strong juvenile event. Big Issue (Richard Hannon/ Richard Hughes) is very consistent and should be in the money again, while Elzaam (Michael Jarvis/ Richard Hills) is the likely favourite but looks a bit tricky. However we prefer Klammer (Jane Chapple-Hyam/ Jamie Spencer), who was beaten 10 lengths by Frankel last time, but there is no disgrace in that.
The St. Simon Stakes over 1 1/4 miles at 15.40 is another Grpup Three race. The question mark here is the very lightly-raced 5yo mare Clowance (Roger Charlton/ Richard Hughes). She is certainly good enough, but has clearly had her problems. Poet (Clive Cox/ Adam Kirby) is another smart performer, but he has to concede weight and this distance may be too far. It is certainly not too far for Jedi (Sir Michael Stoute/ Ryan Moore), who is coming down 3 furlongs in trip, but he is also up in grade, and our nbrrow preference is for Whispering Gallery (Saeed bin Suroor/ Ted Durcan), beaten only inches in a similar event last time at Ascot.
Richard Hughes has still not given up hope of becoming champion jockey and he travels on to Kempton´s evening meeting on the all-weather, where he has 7 rides. All of them have some sort of chance, the most likely winner in our view being Tony Carroll´ s Country Road in the claiming race at 20.15.
