German runners in France today

The German runners were out of luck yesterday at Compiegne, where Daudet was disqualified after winning a ladies´ race, and today´s German-trained runners at Lyon and Fontainebleau all seem to face very difficult tasks. Easily the best race of the day is the Grand Prix de l´Hippodrome de Lyon-la-Soie over 1800 metres on sand (as are all the races at Lyon today) at 14.55, which is contested by Werner Hefter´ s Wellinas (Mathieu Sautjeu).

The ex-Baltromei runner Enzio (Dominique Boeuf) won twice on sand at Cagnes-sur-mer and would appear to have a much better chance, but there is very strong opposition from the local stables. Hefter also saddles Le Danseur (Sautjeau) in a 3yo race at 14.20 and Franziskaner (Boeuf) in a low-grade claimer over 2400 metres at 16.25, while another ex-Baltromei running is Delano (Boeuf) in the 2150 metres handicap at 17.25. In our view, Franziskaner probably has the best chance of these.

Werner Baltromei himself has several runners under his own name at Fontainebleau. Al Maktoub (Yann Lerner) runs in a race for unraced 3yo colts at 14.05, and Navicella (Lerner) and Noreia (Thierry Thulliez) in the fillies equivalent half an hour later, whileCeodora, running under the Lacroix name, goes for the 1200 metres handicap at 17.10. These all look very tricky races.
