Mill Reef and World Trophy at Newbury

There is also a strong card at Newbury this afternoon, headed by two group races, the Mill Reef Stakes for 2yo´s over 6 furlongs at 15.20 CET, and the World Cup Trophy for older sprinters at 16.25. The former event should in theory go to Brian Meehan´s Radiohead (Jamie Spencer), an excellent third to older horses in the Nunthorpe, but we suspect that he is better at the minimum trip and prefer the unbeaten Awzaan (Mark Johnston/ Richard Hills) and Stargaze (Andrew Balding/ William Buick). The latter event looks very open. Strike the Deal (Jeremy Noseda/ Kieren Fallon) finished strongly from last place to win at Doncaster last week, while Triple Aspect (William Haggas/ Ryan Moore), who had excellent form in the spring, is coming off a longish break.

Noseda and Fallon also have prospects in the valuable 10 furlongs handicap at 15.50. This looks just as difficult as the Ayr handicaps, and Class is Class (Sir Michael Stoute/ Moore) and Charm School (John Gosden/ Jimmy Fortune) are just two of many dangers. From the German point of view, the conditions race over 9 furlongs at 18.10, in which Godolphin´s ex-German Peligroso (Ted Durcan) reappears after his poor run in the Union-Rennen in mid-June. is also of interest. On recent form Glass Harmonium (Stoute/ Moore) can be preferred, but he has to give quite a lot of weight to the ex-Hofer runner.
