Galway Festival: second day

the big Galway meeeting continues with some more very competitive racing, and the most valuable event today is the mile handicap at 20.00 CET with a maximum field of 18 runners. Rock and Roll Kid (Tony and Danny Mullins) is the likely favourite, especially as he goes well on the soft, but there are plenty more possibilties here, including the two British raiders Royal Power (David Nicholls/ Shane Foley) - winner of the German 2000 Guineas 3 years ago! - and Wigwam Willie (Kevin Ryan/ Willie Supple). Dermot Weld is the meeting specialist and landed a doube yesterday, so his candidate Bobs Pride also comes into the equation. However he fares, Weld has two clear winning chances with Brushed Aside in the 2yo fillies maiden at 20.35 and Qassaar in the 3yo maiden at 21.40; all his runners are partnered by Pat Smullen. The better of the two races over jumps is the 2 3/4 mile chase at 18.45, in which German-bred Noble Prize (Dessie Hughes/ Roger Loughran) has a sporting chance to m ake all the running.
